sldasmu.dll Load Error: Repair the SOLIDWORKS Install Safely

sldasmu.dll is a SOLIDWORKS application component, not a Windows system file. If Windows reports that sldasmu.dll is missing, not found, corrupted, or unable to load, repair the SOLIDWORKS product that installed it rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

What this file actually does

The file is identified as sldasmu, a component associated with SolidWorks Corporation software. It may be installed with the full SOLIDWORKS application, SOLIDWORKS Viewer, or an older related SOLIDWORKS package.

One indexed SOLIDWORKS Viewer installation inventory places it here:

C:Program Files (x86)SolidWorks Viewersldasmu.dll

That path is useful when checking an older Viewer installation, but it is not a universal location for every SOLIDWORKS release. Modern SOLIDWORKS products and different releases can use different installation directories.

Public metadata for one archived build reports a 32-bit file named sldasmu, with a reported version of 8.1.0.7 and a size of approximately 792 KB. Treat those values as identification information for that particular indexed build, not as requirements for every installation. Do not use them to select a replacement file.

The important distinction is architecture. A 32-bit SOLIDWORKS component can run on 64-bit Windows through Windows’ compatibility support. A 64-bit Windows installation does not mean that every application DLL must be 64-bit. The application that loads the DLL determines which architecture is correct.

What it is not

sldasmu.dll is not:

  • A Windows component that should be copied into C:WindowsSystem32
  • A generic Microsoft Visual C++ runtime file
  • A graphics driver
  • A file that should normally be registered with regsvr32
  • A standalone program that should be downloaded separately

Fix 1: Repair SOLIDWORKS through Programs and Features

This is the safest and most likely fix when sldasmu.dll is missing or damaged.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Close SOLIDWORKS, SOLIDWORKS Viewer, and any related launcher.
  2. Press Windows + R.
  3. Type:

text
appwiz.cpl

  1. Press Enter.
  2. In Programs and Features, find the installed SOLIDWORKS version or SOLIDWORKS Viewer entry.
  3. Right-click it and choose Change.
  4. Wait for SOLIDWORKS Installation Manager to open.
  5. Select Repair your installation.
  6. Choose the affected product.
  7. Click Repair and allow the process to finish.
  8. Restart Windows.
  9. Start the same SOLIDWORKS application that originally displayed the error.

SOLIDWORKS repair may require the original installation files and any applicable service-pack files. If Installation Manager asks for a source location, provide the original installation media, downloaded installation folder, network location, or approved company deployment source.

How to tell whether repair worked

Repair succeeded if the application starts without the sldasmu.dll message and the file is present in the product’s own installation directory. Do not judge success only by whether a file with that name exists somewhere on the disk. The repaired file must belong to the same product and release that is being launched.

If the repair option is missing, the product may have been partially removed or its installation cache may no longer be available. Continue with the reinstall procedure below.

Fix 2: Reinstall the exact SOLIDWORKS product

Reinstall when repair cannot locate its source files, stops with an error, or leaves the same message after a restart.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First identify what was installed:

  • Open Settings with Windows + I.
  • Select Apps.
  • Open Installed apps.
  • Search for SOLIDWORKS or SolidWorks Viewer.
  • Check the listed product name and release information.

You can also return to Programs and Features by pressing Windows + R, entering appwiz.cpl, and pressing Enter.

Use the official SOLIDWORKS account, reseller-provided media, company deployment share, or Installation Manager source for the same product and release. Avoid mixing files from different SOLIDWORKS releases. A DLL with the right filename can still be the wrong build.

When using a SOLIDWORKS download folder, start the installer with its setup.exe file. Do not run individual MSI files manually from the download folder. Installation Manager is responsible for applying the correct product files, prerequisites, and service-pack components together.

After reinstalling:

  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Open the SOLIDWORKS product from its new Start menu shortcut.
  3. Test the operation that previously failed.
  4. Remove or stop using old desktop shortcuts if they point to a copied or retired installation directory.

If the error continues, check the shortcut itself:

  1. Right-click the SOLIDWORKS shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Review the Target field.
  4. Confirm that it points to the intended installed release.
  5. Do not launch SOLIDWORKS from a copied program folder or an old backup location.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine

Antivirus software can remove or quarantine an application file after an update, migration, or scan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Protection history.
  4. Review recent detections.
  5. Look for an entry naming sldasmu.dll or showing the SOLIDWORKS installation directory.
  6. Expand the detection and verify the path, product, and publisher.
  7. Do not restore the file merely because the filename matches.

Only consider restoring a quarantined file when it came from a trusted SOLIDWORKS installation source and the detection has been validated. Restoring an unverified file can reintroduce a security problem, and Windows Security may detect it again.

If the file was quarantined, the more reliable solution is usually to repair or reinstall SOLIDWORKS from the official source after confirming that the installer and installation media are trusted. If your organization manages antivirus policy, ask the administrator to review the detection rather than adding a broad exclusion for an entire disk or Windows folder.

Fix 4: Determine whether a dependency is actually missing

Windows may report:

The specified module could not be found

even when sldasmu.dll is present. In this situation, Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by the DLL.

Reported metadata for one archived sldasmu.dll build lists older libraries including MFC42u.DLL, MSVCRT.dll, and several other SOLIDWORKS modules. That list is not universal, and it does not prove which runtime a current installation requires.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the application directory:

  1. Return to Installed apps or Programs and Features.
  2. Identify the exact SOLIDWORKS product and release.
  3. Use the product’s shortcut properties or Installation Manager information to locate its installation folder.
  4. Look for sldasmu.dll and other nearby SOLIDWORKS files.
  5. Do not copy files from another release into that folder.

If the full error names a Microsoft runtime, install or repair the runtime package named by the installer or error. Microsoft provides current Visual C++ Redistributable packages for x86, x64, and ARM64 systems. A 32-bit application generally needs the x86 package even when Windows itself is 64-bit. Different runtime generations can coexist, so do not remove older packages just because a newer one is installed.

If no specific runtime is named, repair SOLIDWORKS rather than guessing. Installing a current runtime package does not recreate a missing third-party SOLIDWORKS DLL.

Fix 5: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility

The indexed sldasmu.dll information identifies one build as 32-bit, and an older Viewer inventory places it under Program Files (x86). This supports the possibility that an older SOLIDWORKS-related product uses a 32-bit component.

That does not mean every SOLIDWORKS release uses the same architecture. Current SOLIDWORKS desktop releases are intended for 64-bit Windows, while older products and Viewer packages may differ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use these checks:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Choose About.
  4. Review System type.
  5. In Installed apps, identify the affected SOLIDWORKS product and release.
  6. Confirm that the installer matches the product’s supported Windows architecture.

Do not try to solve an architecture mismatch by copying a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit system directory. Windows loads application DLLs according to the application that requests them. The correct repair is to install the matching SOLIDWORKS product and prerequisites.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

SFC and DISM repair Windows component corruption. They normally do not recreate a missing third-party file in a SOLIDWORKS installation directory, so use them after checking SOLIDWORKS repair and antivirus history.

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run:

text
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

  1. Wait for it to complete.
  2. Then run:

text
sfc /scannow

  1. Restart Windows after both commands finish.
  2. Test SOLIDWORKS again.

DISM may take time and can appear to pause at a percentage. Do not close the window while it is working.

A successful SFC result means Windows found and repaired protected system files. It does not confirm that sldasmu.dll was restored. If the same SOLIDWORKS error remains, return to SOLIDWORKS Installation Manager and repair or reinstall the application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can be tedious, especially when the damaged file belongs to an application rather than Windows. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it identifies; its full version performs the repair, but reinstalling SOLIDWORKS remains the definitive fix for this application-specific DLL.

Fix 7: Reconsider a recent driver or software change

A graphics, chipset, storage, or Windows update can expose an existing SOLIDWORKS problem, but a driver is not the usual source of a missing sldasmu.dll. Do not replace the DLL simply because the error appeared after a driver update.

If SOLIDWORKS began failing immediately after a driver change:

  1. Right-click the Start button.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters or System devices.
  4. Right-click the affected device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Open the Driver tab.
  7. Review the driver date and version.
  8. Use Update Driver only with a compatible driver from the device or computer manufacturer.
  9. If the problem clearly began after the latest driver, use Roll Back Driver when that option is available.
  10. Restart Windows and test SOLIDWORKS.

Do not update every Device Manager entry indiscriminately. Focus on the device involved in the recent change and preserve the existing driver until you know whether the change helped.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Manually finding the correct driver versions across several hardware vendors can be time-consuming. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues, while the full version performs driver installation; it is optional, and it does not replace repairing the SOLIDWORKS installation when sldasmu.dll itself is missing.

Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent system change

System Restore can help when the error began directly after a driver, update, or software installation and a suitable restore point exists.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type:

text
rstrui.exe

  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point dated before the problem began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Review the changes.
  6. Select Next, then Finish.
  7. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore does not replace personal files, but it can affect applications, drivers, and settings installed after the selected restore point. If the error remains, repair SOLIDWORKS rather than repeatedly reverting Windows.

Do not run regsvr32 as a general fix

regsvr32 is designed for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It does not restore a missing file, repair a damaged application installation, or download dependencies.

There is no reliable evidence that sldasmu.dll is a self-registering COM or ActiveX component. Running this command is therefore unlikely to help:

regsvr32 sldasmu.dll

It may produce a DllRegisterServer error. Use regsvr32 only if SOLIDWORKS support specifically identifies the file as a self-registering component and gives you the correct path and command.

Why downloading sldasmu.dll is a poor fix

Standalone DLL downloads create several risks:

  • The file may belong to a different SOLIDWORKS release.
  • Its architecture may be wrong.
  • Its dependencies may still be missing.
  • The file may be modified or unsafe.
  • Windows may continue loading files from a damaged or mixed installation.
  • Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or another unrelated folder can create additional conflicts.

The safe sources are the SOLIDWORKS Installation Manager, the official SOLIDWORKS account or media supplied for your organization, an approved reseller, or a company software deployment system. Reinstall the complete product so the related DLLs, manifests, prerequisites, and service-pack files remain consistent.

When to contact SOLIDWORKS support

Escalate after preserving the details below:

  • Exact SOLIDWORKS product name
  • SOLIDWORKS release and service pack
  • Windows version and system architecture
  • Complete error text
  • Full path shown in the error
  • Whether sldasmu.dll exists in the expected application folder
  • Windows Security quarantine history
  • Event Viewer faulting module, if shown
  • Installation Manager error text
  • Installation logs
  • Whether the failure occurs in SOLIDWORKS, Viewer, or File Explorer integration

Older SOLIDWORKS installation documentation places logs under a path similar to:

FAQ

Is sldasmu.dll a Windows file?

No. It is associated with SolidWorks Corporation software and should be repaired through the SOLIDWORKS product that installed it.

Should I download the DLL separately?

No. A standalone copy can be the wrong version, architecture, or dependency set. Repair or reinstall SOLIDWORKS from its official installation source.

Is the file always 32-bit?

No universal conclusion can be made. One indexed older build is reported as 32-bit, and an older Viewer inventory places it under Program Files (x86). That does not establish the architecture of every SOLIDWORKS release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does Windows say that the specified module cannot be found when the file is present?

The message can refer to a missing dependency rather than the named DLL itself. Repair the complete SOLIDWORKS installation and check whether the error names another file.

Will SFC restore sldasmu.dll?

Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while sldasmu.dll belongs to SOLIDWORKS. Use SFC and DISM for Windows corruption, then use SOLIDWORKS Installation Manager for the application.

Should I copy the file to System32 or SysWOW64?

No. Application DLLs should remain with the application that loads them. Copying the file into a Windows system directory can cause version and loading conflicts.

Can I register it with regsvr32?

Not as a general repair. There is no established evidence that this file is a self-registering COM DLL, so regsvr32 is unlikely to solve the error.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

What if the file disappeared after antivirus quarantined it?

Review Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Protection history, verify the detection path and publisher, and then repair SOLIDWORKS from a trusted source. Do not restore an unverified file or create a broad antivirus exclusion.

What is the final fix if repair still fails?

Remove the damaged SOLIDWORKS installation only through its normal uninstaller or Installation Manager, then reinstall the exact product and release from official media. If that also fails, provide the full error, release, service pack, installer logs, and antivirus history to SOLIDWORKS support.
