wzcab2.dll is not a normal Windows component. It is a legacy WinZip module named WinZip CAB Detection and Extractor, historically published by Nico Mak Computing, Inc. The safest repair is to identify the program requesting it, then repair or reinstall that WinZip installation rather than downloading a loose DLL.
Which fix applies to you
Use the first description that matches what you see:
- The error names WinZip or appears when opening WinZip: uninstall and reinstall WinZip.
- The error appears when Windows starts or Explorer opens: check for an old WinZip startup item or shell integration entry.
- Windows Security recently detected or quarantined the file: inspect Protection history before restoring anything.
- The file exists, but Windows reports an entry-point, architecture, or “not designed to run” error: restore the complete application installation instead of replacing only the DLL.
- Several unrelated programs also fail, or Windows has update and corruption symptoms: run DISM and SFC as conditional Windows repairs.
- The error started after installing another application: identify the exact executable and path. It may be a legacy utility that still references WinZip.
- You were about to copy the DLL into System32: do not do that. Application DLLs normally belong beside the application that uses them.
What wzcab2.dll is and where it belongs
Historical WinZip 7 file information identifies WZCAB2.DLL as a required WinZip DLL. A contemporaneous system inventory recorded a copy under:

C:Program FilesWinZipwzcab2.dll
That evidence places the file with the WinZip application, not with Windows. It is a legacy application-local DLL used for CAB archive detection and extraction.
Do not assume every copy has the same version, size, date, or architecture. The known documented copy is from the WinZip 7 era and should be treated as a legacy Win32-era file unless the affected application proves otherwise. There is no reliable evidence that a current 64-bit Windows component named wzcab2.dll should be installed globally.
Windows normally searches an application’s own directory before system locations when loading DLLs for a standard unpackaged application. This is why putting a replacement in C:WindowsSystem32 is both unnecessary and potentially harmful. See Microsoft’s documentation on DLL search order and DLL security.
Fix 1: Identify the executable requesting the file
Before changing anything, record the complete error and the program that displays it.
- Note the application name in the error window.
- If the dialog includes a path, write it down.
- Right-click the program’s shortcut and select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, inspect Target.
- Check whether the target points to an old WinZip directory, a startup utility, an installer, or an unrelated program.
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Startup apps and look for WinZip or an unfamiliar legacy entry.
- If the error appears while opening File Explorer, temporarily disable an old WinZip startup entry and restart Windows.
A missing-DLL message identifies the file that could not be loaded, not necessarily the application that originally installed it. An old WinZip shell integration component or uninstaller can continue requesting wzcab2.dll after the main program has been removed.
If the error returns but no program is obvious, check Event Viewer:
- Press
Win+R. - Type
eventvwr.mscand press Enter. - Expand Windows Logs and select Application.
- Look for an error at the time the dialog appeared.
- Record the faulting application path.
Fix 2: Uninstall and reinstall WinZip
This is the most likely solution when the file is missing or the WinZip installation is damaged.
Uninstall WinZip
On Windows 11 or Windows 10:
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on some Windows 10 builds.
- Find WinZip.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it, or select the entry.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Follow the removal wizard.
- Restart Windows.
WinZip documents this general uninstall path for current Windows versions. If WinZip does not appear in Settings, open Control Panel, select Programs > Programs and Features, select WinZip, and choose Uninstall.

Download WinZip only from the official WinZip product page or its official legacy-download page. Choose the release that matches the application you need.
Current WinZip installers may not contain this old CAB module. If the error comes from a WinZip 7-era installation, you may need the original licensed installer or installation media. If that is unavailable, installing a supported WinZip release or contacting WinZip support is safer than obtaining wzcab2.dll from an unknown repository.
After installation:
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Open WinZip from the Start menu.
- Open or extract a test archive.
- Repeat the action that originally produced the error.
If the error disappears, the repaired application directory now contains the required files. If it remains, check the executable path again. You may have reinstalled one WinZip copy while Windows is launching a different, older copy.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may quarantine or remove an old application DLL. Age alone does not prove that a file is malicious, and a copy in an unexpected directory should not be restored automatically.

- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections around the time the error began.
- Open any entry that mentions
wzcab2.dll. - Check the detected file path, threat details, and source.
- If the path belongs to a legitimate WinZip installation, scan the computer and verify the installation before taking action.
- Prefer uninstalling and reinstalling WinZip so the file is restored as part of the complete application.
- Restore a quarantined copy only when its provenance is clear and your security review supports that decision.
Microsoft notes that restoring a quarantined file can cause Defender to detect it again. Its Protection History guidance explains how to review these detections.
If the file was found in a temporary folder, a user profile, a startup directory, or an unrelated application folder, do not restore it merely because its filename matches. Run a full Microsoft Defender scan and reinstall the legitimate parent application.

Fix 4: Repair a file that exists but will not load
A DLL can be present and still fail because it is corrupted, mismatched, or missing one of its dependent modules.
First inspect the file location:
- In the error dialog, identify the calling executable.
- Right-click its shortcut and select Open file location.
- Look for
wzcab2.dllbeside the relevant WinZip executable. - Right-click the DLL and select Properties.
- Review the General, Details, and Digital Signatures tabs when available.
- Compare the location with the installed WinZip directory.
A copy beside the correct WinZip executable is more plausible than a copy in System32, SysWOW64, %TEMP%, or an unrelated program folder. However, location alone does not prove that a file is safe.

These messages can indicate a damaged binary, an incompatible architecture, or a dependency mismatch.
32-bit and 64-bit considerations
A 32-bit application normally needs the DLL build intended for that application. A 64-bit Windows installation can run many 32-bit applications, but it does not make a 32-bit DLL interchangeable with a 64-bit one.
Do not solve an architecture mismatch by copying files between:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- different WinZip installation directories
Those folders have specific Windows loader roles, and moving application files between them can create additional conflicts. Reinstall the parent application so its installer places compatible files together.

Do not routinely run:
regsvr32 wzcab2.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide the registration entry points used by COM or ActiveX components. A normal WinZip support DLL is not automatically a COM server, and registering it does not restore a missing application dependency.
Microsoft’s Regsvr32 documentation explains the tool’s scope. If a particular vendor instruction explicitly requires registration of a specific component, follow that vendor instruction. For wzcab2.dll, reinstalling WinZip is the established repair path.
Fix 6: Repair broader Windows component corruption
DISM and SFC repair Windows component and system-file problems. They do not normally restore a third-party WinZip DLL, so use them when you also see multiple unrelated application failures, failed Windows updates, damaged system components, or other corruption symptoms.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the affected application.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC in its system file repair procedure.

If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and retest. If it reports that it could not repair some files, repeat the repair only as Microsoft’s instructions recommend, then return to the WinZip reinstall if the wzcab2.dll error remains.

Fix 7: Do not install unrelated runtimes automatically
wzcab2.dll is not identified as a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, .NET, graphics-driver, or Windows Update file.
Install or repair another package only when the error names a file or dependency belonging to that package:
MSVCP,VCRUNTIME, orucrtbasefiles can indicate a Visual C++ Redistributable requirement.d3dx9_*.dlland similar files can indicate a DirectX requirement.- A program that reports a .NET runtime or framework requirement may need an official .NET download.
Installing these packages will not normally recreate wzcab2.dll.

Fix 8: Check drivers only when there is a separate driver problem
A graphics or device driver does not normally install the WinZip CAB Detection and Extractor module. Do not use Device Manager as the first response to this DLL error.
If you also have a device problem:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category for the affected device.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Review the General tab for an error code.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Use Update Driver or obtain the driver from the device manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test the device separately from WinZip.

Fix 9: Use System Restore only as a last resort
System Restore is appropriate only when the problem began after a recent installation, update, or removal and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press
Win+R. - Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not replace a careful WinZip reinstall and may remove recently installed applications or drivers. Microsoft provides additional guidance for System Restore.
When the normal fix fails
If reinstalling WinZip does not resolve the message, identify the exact caller rather than trying more DLL copies.
Check these locations and records:
- The error dialog’s executable name and path
- Event Viewer’s Application log
- Task Manager’s Startup apps
- Installed WinZip versions in Settings
- Old WinZip folders under
C:Program FilesandC:Program Files (x86) - Antivirus Protection history
- A launcher’s built-in verify or repair option, if the parent program is managed by a launcher
An old uninstaller, shell extension, or startup entry may be requesting the file even though the visible WinZip application has already been removed. If a launcher owns the affected program, use its verify or repair-files function before replacing anything manually.
Preventing another wzcab2.dll error
- Keep only the WinZip installation you actually use.
- Remove obsolete WinZip startup and shell-integration entries.
- Use official WinZip installers and preserve the original licensed installer for legacy software.
- Keep Windows Security active and review quarantine paths before restoring files.
- Do not place application DLLs in
System32orSysWOW64. - Do not use registry cleaners or random DLL repositories as repair tools.
- When upgrading Windows, replace unsupported legacy WinZip software with a supported release where possible.
FAQ
Is wzcab2.dll a Windows system file?
No. Evidence identifies it as a legacy WinZip application DLL, not a Microsoft Windows component.
Should I download wzcab2.dll separately?
No. Random DLL downloads can contain malware, the wrong version, or the wrong architecture, and they often leave the damaged WinZip installation unresolved. Reinstall WinZip from its official source instead.
Should I copy it into System32?
No. It normally belongs beside the WinZip executable that loads it. Global placement can cause version conflicts and unsafe DLL search behavior.
Can Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET restore it?
Not normally. Those packages address their own runtime files. Install them only when the error identifies a matching dependency.
Is every wzcab2.dll file old or malicious?
