Those scores are encouraging, but they measure different groups in different ways. The game itself is a single-player ranching and exploration adventure: you raise and combine slimes, build up your ranch, and explore the Far, Far Range.
What kind of game is Slime Rancher?
In Slime Rancher, you play Beatrix LeBeau, who travels to the Far, Far Range to make a living wrangling slimes. Monomi Park developed and published the game, which Steam lists as released on August 1, 2017. Steam classifies it as an action, adventure, indie, and simulation game, and lists it as single-player.

The central activities combine ranch management with exploration. You feed slimes with crops and chickadoos, fulfill daily requests, upgrade your vacpack and ranch, and craft gadgets through Slime Science. Steam says players can discover more than 150 hybrid slimes by combining them, and lists Adventure, Casual, and Rush modes. These are the listed features; how engaging the routine feels will depend on whether you enjoy its mix of tending, upgrades, and exploration.
What do the reviews say?
Metacritic gives Slime Rancher an 81 critic Metascore, labeled “Generally Favorable,” based on nine critic reviews. Its user score is 8.1 based on 553 user ratings. These are separate aggregated scores, and their sample sizes are relatively small compared with Steam’s review count.

Steam’s English-language review summary was 98% positive from 65,813 reviews when retrieved in 2026, with the label “Overwhelmingly Positive.” Steam also showed 98% positive from 1,032 reviews posted in the preceding 30 days. That recent-review figure uses a moving window, so it changes over time. Steam’s positive-review percentages are not directly comparable to Metacritic’s scaled scores.
Together, the figures indicate a favorable reception on both platforms, not a guarantee that every player will enjoy the game. Aggregated ratings also cannot tell you whether the ranching loop, exploration, or pace suits your preferences.

What should you consider before buying?
Whether the gameplay loop fits you
The store description points to a cycle of collecting and caring for slimes, growing food, fulfilling requests, upgrading equipment, crafting gadgets, and exploring for secrets and treasures. If you are deciding based on reviews, consider whether that combination sounds appealing: the listing describes the activities, but it does not establish how quickly they unfold or how much challenge they offer.
Platform features and availability
Steam lists achievements, trading cards, cloud saves, family sharing, remote play options, and full controller support. It marks the game as Steam Deck “Playable.” Steam’s language list and technical requirements can change, so check the live listing for the details that matter to your setup.
