Slitterhead is an action-horror adventure built around a strange, flexible idea: its bodiless protagonist can possess ordinary people, then switch hosts to investigate, move through Kowlong and fight creatures hiding among its residents. That premise gives the game a distinctive identity, though Pedro Herrero’s MeriStation review found that repetition, rough animations and modest technical presentation keep it from reaching its potential.
What kind of game is Slitterhead?
Slitterhead is an action-adventure game with horror elements, not a conventional survival-horror game. Steam describes it as a battle-focused adventure set in Kowlong, a densely populated city where monsters called Slitterheads disguise themselves as humans. You control Hyoki, an entity without a physical body or memory, whose purpose is to hunt them.
The unusual premise shapes the core loop: investigate the city, find allies known as Rarities, track Slitterheads and fight them once they reveal their monstrous forms. Bokeh Game Studio founder and creator Keiichiro Toyama said the game was not intended as a traditional blockbuster action game or horror title, adding that “like Hyoki it defies easy comparisons.” Bokeh’s launch announcement frames that as an effort to make a game that stands apart, rather than a promise that it will satisfy every action or horror fan.
How does possession work?
Hyoki can take control of human hosts and move between them. Host switching is useful beyond combat: some people can reach areas that are otherwise locked, and changing bodies supports traversal and infiltration as well as fights. The city’s residents are therefore part of the game’s toolkit, not just background characters.

- Take Various Forms and Hunt Slitterheads in the Red Light District
- Possession-based High Speed Action
- Thrilling Combat Using the Power of Blood
- An Original New Offering from Two Industry Titans
- Day 1 Edition contains a soundtrack CD, 100pg+ artbook, and sticker sheet with the game in a custom box
Some hosts are Rarities, people with distinctive fighting styles, weapons and blood-powered abilities. Hyoki uses blood for attacks and can detect Slitterheads while investigating clues. The official descriptions establish the range of these systems, but they do not guarantee that every encounter feels equally smooth in practice; Herrero’s review specifically found the combat clumsy at times.
Is Slitterhead worth playing?
It is most appealing if you want a game with a genuinely unusual central mechanic and a strange, twist-driven story. It is a more qualified recommendation if you expect polished animations, consistently varied encounters or a traditional survival-horror structure.

Pedro Herrero’s MeriStation review, updated November 16, 2024, awarded the game 7/10. Herrero praised its originality, unusual ideas and twisted plot, and described possession as useful for exploration and combat. He also criticized the limited technical presentation, repetition as the hours pass and combat that can feel clumsy because animations lack fluidity. That score is one reviewer’s assessment, not an aggregate or a claim of consensus.
Is it survival horror?
Not in the usual sense of a survival-horror game centered on vulnerability, resource management and escaping threats. The available descriptions emphasize action, investigation, possession and blood-powered combat. Horror is present in the setting and the Slitterheads’ revealed forms, but readers seeking a conventional survival-horror experience should not assume that label fits.
