smartcardcredentialprovider.dll Errors: Rebuild Windows Safely

Length8 min Posted Quest giverVGSources Team

Start with this diagnostic checklist

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

smartcardcredentialprovider.dll is a Windows component, not a game or Visual C++ runtime file. If Windows reports that smartcardcredentialprovider.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, first identify where the error appears and what changed.

  • Does it appear at sign-in, mention LogonUI.exe, or prevent Windows from reaching the desktop?
  • Does it appear only when launching one game or application?
  • Is the file expected in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64?
  • Did the problem follow a Windows update, failed upgrade, crash, cleanup utility, malware removal, or antivirus quarantine?
  • Is the affected program 32-bit or 64-bit?

The safest repair is to restore Windows component files through Windows servicing. Do not start by downloading an isolated DLL.

What smartcardcredentialprovider.dll actually is

SmartcardCredentialProvider.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system component. It belongs to the credential-provider framework used by Windows Logon UI and Winlogon to collect authentication information, including smart-card credentials. Microsoft documents smart-card providers alongside password, PIN, and Windows Hello providers in its Credential Providers in Windows documentation.

That is why LogonUI.exe may appear in the error. Logon UI loads credential providers while presenting the Windows sign-in screen. A damaged provider can therefore cause a sign-in failure even though the visible message resembles an ordinary application DLL error.

This file is not part of the Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, .NET, Office, or a game runtime. Reinstalling those packages will generally not restore it.

Check the correct Windows location and architecture

On 64-bit Windows, the native 64-bit copy belongs here:

%windir%System32SmartcardCredentialProvider.dll

The 32-bit copy, where Windows supplies one, belongs here:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
%windir%SysWOW64SmartcardCredentialProvider.dll

The names are confusing, but on 64-bit Windows System32 contains 64-bit system files and SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. Microsoft explains this behavior in its File System Redirector documentation.

To check the files:

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Enter %windir%System32.
  3. Search for SmartcardCredentialProvider.dll.
  4. Repeat with %windir%SysWOW64.
  5. Right-click any copy, choose Properties, and inspect Digital Signatures.

A valid Windows copy should identify Microsoft as the signer. The presence of a file does not prove that it is healthy, correctly matched to the installed build, or safe.

Do not replace a 64-bit file with a 32-bit copy, or copy a file from another Windows version or another computer. There is no single universal DLL version that applies to every Windows installation.

Fix 1: Install updates and restart

A failed servicing operation can leave Windows component storage inconsistent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
  2. Select Check for updates.
  3. Install all available updates.
  4. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
  5. Test sign-in or launch the affected program again.

If Windows Update repeatedly fails, continue with the repair commands below rather than repeatedly downloading DLL files.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM, then SFC

This is the main repair for a missing or damaged system copy.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  4. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  5. Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to finish. It may appear paused during some phases.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows when both commands finish.

DISM repairs the Windows component store that supplies replacement files. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies. Run them in this order, not the other way around.

Success usually means DISM reports that the restore operation completed and SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupt files, or that no integrity violations were found. Test the original action afterward.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If DISM reports that source files could not be found, use a matching Windows repair source:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess

Replace the example path with a valid source from matching Windows installation media. The edition, language, and architecture must match the installed system.

Repeatedly hunting through logs and rerunning SFC/DISM can be tedious when several Windows components are damaged. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying problems and show what needs attention; its repair features require the full version, and reinstalling a specific game or application remains the definitive fix when the error is outside the Windows component path.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software can quarantine a legitimate system file after a mistaken detection, or remove a file during malware cleanup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In Windows Security:

  1. Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security.
  2. Select Windows Security.
  3. Choose Virus & threat protection.
  4. Select Protection history.
  5. Look for an entry involving SmartcardCredentialProvider.dll.
  6. Expand the entry and review its path, detection name, and action.

Do not restore the file automatically. Restore it only if the path is a Windows system directory, the file is Microsoft-signed, and you have confirmed that the detection is a false positive. Microsoft warns that restoring a genuinely malicious file can put the computer at risk.

After addressing quarantine, run DISM and SFC again. Those tools are safer for restoring the correct Windows copy than copying the quarantined file manually.

  • Compatible with US Military and Government DOD ID cards. Good for online banking and credit card payment apps, etc

Fix 4: Use System Restore if the timing is clear

System Restore is useful when the error began immediately after a driver installation, cleanup utility, update, or configuration change and a restore point exists.

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Enter:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Confirm the restore point and select Finish.
  6. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore normally rolls back system files, drivers, and settings without removing personal documents. It does not replace a full backup and may not be available on every system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 5: Repair Windows without removing apps and files

If DISM, SFC, and System Restore do not resolve the issue, use a Windows repair installation rather than manually replacing the DLL.

On Windows 11, check for the built-in repair option:

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select System > Recovery.
  3. Look for Fix problems using Windows Update.
  4. Select Reinstall now if it is offered.
  5. Follow the prompts and keep the option to preserve apps, files, and settings.

Microsoft describes this as reinstalling the current Windows version while preserving personal data, applications, and settings.

For broader corruption, use matching Windows installation media and start setup from within Windows. Choose the option to Keep personal files and apps. Microsoft’s installation-media repair guidance explains the process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Windows cannot boot, enter Windows Recovery Environment from the recovery screen or installation media. Try Startup Repair, System Restore, and offline repair tools before considering a clean installation.

Fix 6: Separate a smart-card problem from a Windows DLL problem

A faulty reader, certificate, smart-card minidriver, or enterprise authentication package usually causes problems such as:

  • Compact and lightweight dongle form-factor card reader
  • Accepts cards in ID1 format (ISO8716)
  • The reader is not detected.
  • The card is detected but the PIN fails.
  • A certificate is missing or unavailable.
  • Windows cannot validate the card or certificate.

Those symptoms are different from a missing SmartcardCredentialProvider.dll error, although both can prevent smart-card sign-in.

To inspect the reader:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Smart card readers.
  4. Right-click the reader and select Properties.
  5. Check Device status under the General tab.
  6. Open the Driver tab and note the provider and version.
  7. Use Update Driver only with a driver from the reader or enterprise software vendor.
  8. If the device is clearly broken, choose Uninstall device, restart Windows, and reinstall the vendor’s current package.

For managed work computers, contact the administrator before changing credential-provider registry keys, smart-card policies, certificate settings, or authentication software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When several devices have stale drivers, manually identifying the correct package can mean comparing hardware IDs and vendor releases. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver problems; driver installation through the full version is optional, and the reader manufacturer or enterprise administrator remains the proper source for specialized smart-card software.

Why downloading the DLL is the wrong first move

Random DLL download sites sites create several risks:

  • The file may contain malware or unwanted modifications.
  • It may be the wrong Windows build.
  • It may be the wrong architecture.
  • It may have missing dependencies.
  • It may be unsigned or signed by an unexpected publisher.
  • Replacing one file may hide broader component-store corruption.

A file that produces “The specified module could not be found” may itself exist while one of its dependencies is missing. The message does not prove that the named DLL is the only damaged item.

Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, matching installation media, or Microsoft recovery options instead. Do not download an isolated copy and place it beside a game or application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not use regsvr32 as a routine repair

Credential providers are registered Windows components, but there is no verified Microsoft instruction to manually register this file with regsvr32.

Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation describes a tool for DLLs that expose a self-registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose command for repairing any missing or damaged DLL. Running it against this file can produce another error without repairing Windows.

If the error appears only in one application

If the message occurs only in a third-party program and the reported DLL is located outside %windir%, investigate that program separately.

  7. Restart Windows.
  8. Reinstall it from the developer’s official installer.
  9. Check the program’s own antivirus quarantine entries.

Do not assume that a third-party program legitimately owns a Windows credential-provider DLL. A copy outside the Windows directories may indicate a damaged installation, a misleading error, or tampering.

FAQ

Is smartcardcredentialprovider.dll legitimate?

Yes. The Windows smart-card credential provider is a genuine Microsoft system component. Verify the location and Microsoft digital signature rather than trusting the filename alone.

Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

No, not solely for this error. This DLL is part of Windows authentication infrastructure, not those redistributable packages.

Why does Windows say “not designed to run on Windows”?

That loader message can indicate corruption, an incompatible architecture, a mismatched build, or a damaged dependency. It does not prove that downloading another copy will solve the problem.

Is the file supposed to be in System32 or SysWOW64?

On 64-bit Windows, the native copy belongs in System32; the 32-bit copy, where supplied, belongs in SysWOW64. Do not move files between those folders.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the error says “the specified module could not be found”?

The named file may be present while a dependency it needs is missing. Run DISM followed by SFC and inspect the Windows component state instead of copying another DLL.

When should I contact IT?

Contact IT when the computer is work-managed, uses smart-card policies, relies on an enterprise credential provider, or still fails after Windows repair. Avoid changing sign-in policies or registry entries without approval.
