Start with this quick diagnostic checklist
Before changing Windows, note:
- Which program or service shows the error. Write down its name and whether it is a monitoring tool, MIB compiler, older administration utility, game, or ordinary desktop application.
- When the error appears. Does it happen during Windows startup, when launching one program, after enabling SNMP, after Windows Update, or after antivirus activity?
- Your Windows architecture. Open Settings > System > About and check System type. Do not replace a 64-bit Windows component with an old 32-bit DLL, or vice versa.
- The exact message. Common variants include:
- “This application failed to start because smimsgif.dll was not found.”
- “The program can’t start because smimsgif.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Error loading smimsgif.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “smimsgif.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “The procedure entry point … could not be located in smimsgif.dll.”
The fastest safe route is usually to restore the Windows SNMP and WMI SNMP Provider capabilities, then repair Windows component files with DISM and SFC.
What smimsgif.dll actually does
smimsgif.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system file. Its description is “WMI SNMP MIB Compiler Fatal Error Messages.” It belongs to the legacy Windows Management Instrumentation SNMP provider and supplies message resources used by the smi2smir SNMP MIB compiler.

That name is easy to misunderstand. “Fatal Error Messages” does not mean the DLL itself is malware or a general-purpose crash library. It means the file contains text and resources that the compiler can use when it reports a fatal condition while processing an SNMP MIB.
SNMP, or Simple Network Management Protocol, is used to expose information from devices such as switches, routers, printers, servers, and other managed hardware. WMI provides a Windows management interface. Microsoft’s WMI SNMP provider acts as a bridge between those systems, allowing WMI-aware software to access SNMP information.

The related smi2smir compiler translates SNMP MIB objects into WMI objects. MIB files describe the objects and values that a device exposes. The resulting WMI representation can involve WMI namespaces and MOF-related definitions. smimsgif.dll is part of that older compiler and provider environment, not a graphics, DirectX, Visual C++, or .NET runtime file.
Microsoft documents the relationship in its guides for WMI and SNMP, smi2smir, and setting up the WMI SNMP environment.
Why the file may be absent on Windows 10 or 11
SNMP and the WMI SNMP Provider are optional Windows capabilities. They are also deprecated, so a normal Windows installation does not have to contain every file associated with them.
That explains an important distinction:
- If you actively use SNMP monitoring, MIB compilation, or older WMI management software, the missing file may indicate that the required capability was removed or damaged.
- If you never use SNMP or WMI SNMP software, the absence of
smimsgif.dllmay be harmless until an old program tries to load it. - A modern application that displays this error may have been built around an old Windows management dependency. Reinstalling that application may still be necessary after repairing Windows.
The file historically appears in Windows component locations associated with WMI and SNMP, including a path under:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
%windir%System32wbemsnmp
Do not treat an old file path as a universal rule for every current Windows build. Windows servicing, architecture, and optional-feature state determine what is installed.
Fix 1: Check and install the SNMP capabilities
This is the most direct fix when the error is connected to SNMP, WMI, MIB files, or a network-monitoring application.
Use Windows Settings
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Optional features.
- Choose View features or Add a feature.
- Search for Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP).
- Select it and choose Next, then Add.
- Repeat the process for WMI SNMP Provider.
- Restart Windows if Settings requests it.
On older Windows 10 releases, the route may be Settings > Apps > Apps & features > Optional features.
Microsoft’s current installation guidance is in its article about adding SNMP and WMI SNMP Provider.
After restarting, launch the program that produced the error. If it starts or the MIB operation works, the missing component was the cause.
Install and verify the capabilities with PowerShell
If the feature is not visible in Settings, open Windows PowerShell as administrator:
- Open Start.
- Type PowerShell.
- Right-click Windows PowerShell.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run these commands separately:
Add-WindowsCapability -Online -Name "SNMP.Client~~~~0.0.1.0"
Add-WindowsCapability -Online -Name "WMI-SNMP-Provider.Client~~~~0.0.1.0"
Then verify their state:
Get-WindowsCapability -Online -Name "SNMP.Client~~~~0.0.1.0"
Get-WindowsCapability -Online -Name "WMI-SNMP-Provider.Client~~~~0.0.1.0"
The desired result is:
State : Installed
Restart Windows and test again.
Do not substitute older DISM feature names such as SNMP or WMISnmpProvider if Windows reports error 0x800f080c. On affected Windows versions, those names are not recognized. Use the capability names shown above.
If installation fails, record the exact error, your Windows edition and build, and the reported capability state. Enterprise policies, WSUS configuration, missing Features on Demand sources, or component-store damage can prevent an optional feature from being added.

If the capabilities are installed but smimsgif.dll is missing, corrupted, or rejected as the wrong version, repair Windows in the order Microsoft recommends.
Run DISM first
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for the operation to finish. It may take some time and can appear to pause at certain percentages.
DISM repairs the Windows component store or obtains valid component files from Windows servicing sources. When it completes successfully, restart Windows.
Run System File Checker second
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. SFC checks protected Windows files and replaces damaged copies using the repaired component store.
Restart once more and test the affected application.
Typical outcomes include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected files appear intact.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: retry the program after restarting.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. If the result does not change, continue to the repair-escalation section.
Microsoft explains this DISM-before-SFC repair process.

Repeating SFC without knowing what changed can waste time. Outbyte PC Repair can show what it detects during a scan, while the repair work is performed by the full version; it is optional, and the official Windows repair commands remain the correct first step.
Fix 3: Check Microsoft Defender quarantine
Security software can quarantine a legitimate Windows component after a detection, cleanup operation, or servicing event.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an action involving
smimsgif.dll. - Expand the detection and review its location, threat name, and action.
Do not immediately restore the file. First confirm that it was located inside a normal Windows component path and that the detection was not associated with a user profile, temporary folder, or unrelated application directory.
If the file was quarantined and you have confirmed it is a genuine Windows component, follow Defender’s available restore process. Then reinstall the SNMP and WMI SNMP capabilities and run DISM and SFC.
Do not disable antivirus merely to make the error disappear. Microsoft’s guidance on Protection History and quarantined items explains why restoring a detected file can expose the computer if the detection was correct.
Fix 4: Identify what is requesting the DLL
A message naming smimsgif.dll does not prove that the file itself is the only problem.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →“The specified module could not be found”
This wording can mean either:
smimsgif.dllis missing, orsmimsgif.dllexists but one of its dependent modules is missing.
If the error appears only in one application, record the application name and version shown in the window or event log. Check Event Viewer by right-clicking Start, selecting Event Viewer, and reviewing Windows Logs > Application around the failure time.
If the program is a third-party monitoring or administration tool, repair or reinstall that program after repairing the Windows capabilities. If it expects a private copy of a provider file, its installer may be damaged or incompatible with the current Windows build.
There is no reliable public evidence identifying a particular mainstream game that officially bundles smimsgif.dll. Do not assume that a game requires it merely because a generic DLL error page names the file.
Entry-point errors
An error stating that a procedure entry point cannot be located usually indicates a version mismatch. Possible causes include:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- An old DLL copied from another Windows release.
- A 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch.
- A damaged or incomplete optional-feature installation.
- A dependent file from a different Windows build.
The solution is to reinstall the matching Windows capability and repair the component store. Do not replace the named file with an XP, Vista, x86, or x64 copy chosen only by filename.
Fix 5: Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration procedures, commonly COM or ActiveX components. There is no verified evidence that smimsgif.dll is a self-registering COM DLL.
Running this command is therefore not a normal repair:
regsvr32 smimsgif.dll
It may produce an entry-point or registration error because the file’s role is to provide SNMP compiler messages, not to register a COM class.

Fix 6: Check architecture and avoid loose DLL replacements
The 32-bit versus 64-bit distinction matters, but copying a file into System32 or SysWOW64 is not a safe way to solve it.
A DLL can depend on:
- Other files from the same Windows component.
- A matching architecture.
- A compatible Windows build.
- Servicing metadata and component-store ownership.
A file from an older installation may have the right name but the wrong internal dependencies. It can create a second failure instead of repairing the first one.
Use Settings > System > About to confirm your system type. Then install the SNMP and WMI SNMP capabilities through Windows rather than selecting a DLL manually. Windows will choose the appropriate component for the installed system.
Never download smimsgif.dll from a random DLL repository. Those files can contain malware, can be the wrong architecture or version, and often leave the damaged Windows component or missing dependency untouched. The safe official sources are Windows Optional Features, Windows Update, DISM’s component store or repair source, and supported Windows installation media.

Fix 7: Update or reinstall related device-management software
smimsgif.dll is not a hardware driver and Device Manager will not directly reinstall it. However, a network-monitoring application, printer-management utility, or vendor tool may depend on both the SNMP provider and its own driver or service.
If the problem began after a hardware or management-software change:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Network adapters, Printers, or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Review the General tab for a device status error.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and date.
- Use Update Driver only with a driver supplied for the exact device and Windows architecture.
- If the vendor application is damaged, uninstall and reinstall that application from its official vendor source.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through device models and driver versions, with the free scan showing detected issues and driver installation handled by the full version; it is not a substitute for reinstalling the Windows SNMP capability when that is the actual cause.
Do not expect a driver update to restore a missing smimsgif.dll. This step is only relevant when Device Manager or the requesting application also shows a separate driver problem.
Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent change
If the error began immediately after a Windows update, cleanup utility, feature removal, driver installation, or security change, System Restore may return the component state to an earlier working point.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Next, review the affected drives, and choose Finish.
System Restore does not normally remove personal documents, but it can remove recently installed programs, drivers, and updates. Microsoft’s System Restore guidance explains how restore points work.
If no restore point exists, or the repair fails, use Windows recovery options or a supported repair installation. Back up important files first.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When the missing file is harmless
If no installed program needs SNMP, no service is trying to compile MIB files, and the SNMP capabilities are not installed, Windows does not need to contain every legacy SNMP file.
In that situation, do not force the file into the system. Instead:
- Identify the program producing the error.
- Repair or uninstall that program.
- Check its startup entry or scheduled task if the message appears during boot.
- Remove obsolete software that still expects the deprecated provider.
If the program is essential to your work or network, install the official Windows capabilities and confirm that the application supports the legacy WMI SNMP provider on your Windows version.
FAQ
Is smimsgif.dll a legitimate Windows file?
Yes. It is a Microsoft Windows file associated with the WMI SNMP MIB compiler and its fatal-error message resources. Its normal role is tied to the optional SNMP and WMI SNMP Provider components.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIs smimsgif.dll malware?
The filename alone does not prove malware. A file in an unexpected location, such as a temporary folder, user profile, or unrelated application directory, should be checked with Microsoft Defender and its digital signature before it is trusted.
Should I download smimsgif.dll?
No. There is no verified standalone Microsoft download page for this DLL. Restore the Windows capability through Optional features or PowerShell, then use DISM and SFC.
Will installing Visual C++ fix the error?
Usually not. smimsgif.dll is not a Visual C++ runtime file. Install a Visual C++ package only if the error separately names a missing Visual C++ runtime DLL.
Does Windows 11 always include this file?
No. SNMP and the WMI SNMP Provider are optional and deprecated. A clean or updated Windows installation may not contain their files unless the capabilities are installed.
Can I register it with regsvr32?
Normally no. It is not documented as a self-registering COM DLL. Use capability installation and Windows repair tools instead.
What if SFC says it found no problems?
SFC checks protected files that are already part of the installed Windows image. It does not install an optional capability that was never added. Check the SNMP and WMI SNMP Provider states separately.
What if the error appears in only one application?
Repair the Windows capability first if the program uses SNMP or WMI. Then repair or reinstall the application. A single-program failure can indicate a missing dependency, incompatible architecture, or damaged application installation rather than a system-wide DLL problem.
