wsfirscr.dll was not found, so Windows may show “The program can’t start because wsfirscr.dll is missing from your computer.” An error such as “Error loading wsfirscr.dll” or “The specified module could not be found” usually means that WS_FTP Professional is incomplete, damaged, blocked, or missing a dependency.
Which fix applies to you
Use the first description that matches what happened:
- WS_FTP Pro stopped starting after an update, cleanup, or failed installation: repair or reinstall the same WS_FTP release.
- Windows Security recently quarantined a file: check Protection history, then prefer reinstalling WS_FTP from a trusted installer.
- The error names a different program: identify the executable requesting the DLL before changing anything.
- The file is present but Windows still reports that a module is missing: reinstall the complete application because a dependent file may be absent.
- WS_FTP is an older installation and you no longer have its setup file: recover the matching installer through your licensing records or the Progress customer portal.
- Several Windows programs are failing: check Windows updates, then run DISM and SFC.
- The issue began immediately after a system or software change: consider System Restore.
- You were advised to run
regsvr32: do not use it as a general DLL repair command. This file is normally an application module, not a COM component that needs registration. - You found the DLL on a download site: do not copy it into Windows folders. A random replacement can be malicious, mismatched, or unable to load its own dependencies.
What is wsfirscr.dll?
wsfirscr.dll is an application DLL belonging to WS_FTP Professional, historically published by Ipswitch and now documented by Progress. Its reported description is WS_FTP Firewall Script module.
The module supports WS_FTP FireScripts. These scripts customize how an FTP connection proceeds through a firewall or proxy. Depending on the connection, a script can control commands, responses, authentication, proxy behavior, and parts of SSL negotiation.

That makes this file different from a Windows system DLL. It should normally be supplied by the WS_FTP Professional installer and placed in the application’s installation folder. It should not normally be copied into:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- A global Windows directory
Current WS_FTP installations may use a path beneath C:Program Files (x86)ProgressWS_FTP Professional, but historical releases can use different folders. Do not assume that one path, size, hash, or file version applies to every WS_FTP installation.
First identify the program requesting the file
Before replacing anything, confirm that WS_FTP Pro is the affected application.
- Read the complete error window.
- Note the program name shown in the title bar or message.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc if the program remains listed.
- Right-click the suspected application on the Processes tab.
- Select Open file location.
- Check whether the executable is part of WS_FTP Professional.
If the error appears during a shortcut launch, right-click the shortcut and choose Properties. The Target field shows the executable Windows is trying to start.
Also record:
- The exact error text
- The full path of the requesting executable
- Your Windows edition
- Your WS_FTP release, if visible
- Whether the error began after an update, uninstall, cleanup, restore, or antivirus alert
“ The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that wsfirscr.dll itself is absent. Windows can show that message when the DLL exists but another dependency cannot be loaded.
Fix 1: Repair WS_FTP Professional
Repair is the safest first step because it restores files from the application’s own installer and preserves the intended release.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- In Programs and Features, find WS_FTP Professional.
- Select it.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Uninstall/Change, depending on what your installer provides.
- Follow the setup wizard.
- Restart Windows when the repair finishes.
- Start WS_FTP again.
If WS_FTP opens normally and the missing-file message does not return, the repair restored the module.
If there is no Repair option, choose Change if available. Some installers put repair functions inside that workflow. Do not remove the program yet unless you have confirmed that you can reinstall the correct release.
Fix 2: Reinstall the matching WS_FTP release
If repair is unavailable or fails, reinstall WS_FTP Professional using the original installer or a package obtained through the Progress customer portal.

- Passwords stored in a password manager or documented securely
Do not assume that uninstalling will preserve every profile or script.
Uninstall the damaged installation
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find WS_FTP Professional.
- Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the entry on Windows 10.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Complete the removal.
- Restart Windows.

- Obtain the installer from your original software records or the official Progress customer portal.
- Confirm that it is the same WS_FTP release, or a supported release you are licensed to use.
- Right-click the installer.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Follow the setup wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch WS_FTP and test the connection that previously failed.
A complete reinstall is more reliable than copying only wsfirscr.dll. It restores the application’s related files, configuration, registration information, and dependencies together.
For a legacy WS_FTP release, the correct installer may need to be recovered from licensing or support records. Do not substitute a DLL from another release merely because its filename matches.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security Protection history
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine a legitimate application file. This is especially worth checking if the error appeared immediately after a scan.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Look for an item connected with WS_FTP or its installation folder.
- Expand the detection to view its path and action.
Only consider restoring a file when all of these are true:
- The path belongs to your legitimate WS_FTP installation.
- The file came from a trusted installer.
- You recognize the WS_FTP installation.
- You have scanned the complete installer and application.
- You are confident the detection is a false positive.
If you restore a quarantined item, Windows Security may detect it again. Reinstalling WS_FTP from a trusted installer is usually safer than restoring an isolated file.
Do not add an unknown DLL to antivirus exclusions simply because it is named wsfirscr.dll. A malware sample can use the same filename.
Fix 4: Check whether the file exists but cannot load
Search the WS_FTP installation folder, not the whole Windows directory first.
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to the WS_FTP Professional folder.
- Look for
wsfirscr.dll. - Right-click it and select Properties.
- Check the General tab for a security message or an Unblock option.
- Check the Digital Signatures tab if one is present.
- Review the file path carefully.
If the file is missing, repair or reinstall WS_FTP.

If the file exists but the program still fails:
- A dependent module may be missing.
- The file may belong to another WS_FTP build.
- The file may be damaged.
- The file may be blocked or altered.
- The requesting executable may not be the WS_FTP program you expected.
Do not move the file to another folder to test it. Keep it beside the executable that originally installed it.
Fix 5: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 64-bit version of Windows can run a 32-bit WS_FTP application. That is normal and does not mean you need a 64-bit replacement DLL.
Some WS_FTP releases use a 32-bit application layout, including an installation beneath Program Files (x86). The architecture of every historical wsfirscr.dll build is not confirmed by a universal vendor file listing, so use the installer supplied for your exact WS_FTP release.
To check your Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Read System type.
Do not download a 64-bit DLL for a 32-bit WS_FTP executable. Do not copy a 32-bit DLL into System32 or a 64-bit DLL into SysWOW64 as a workaround. The folder names and application architecture do not make an incompatible file suitable.

Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 as a general repair
regsvr32 registers DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a universal command for replacing, repairing, or loading every DLL.
Running:
regsvr32 wsfirscr.dll
is generally irrelevant for this problem. If Windows reports that DllRegisterServer is missing, that usually means the DLL is not a self-registering COM component. It does not prove that the file is damaged.
Use the WS_FTP installer instead. Only register a DLL when the software vendor’s instructions explicitly require it.
Fix 7: Install Windows updates and repair Windows components
Use this step when several unrelated applications are failing, Windows itself behaves abnormally, or the problem began after system corruption. These commands repair protected Windows components. They do not replace a missing third-party WS_FTP file.

Install pending updates
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart the computer.
- Check for updates again until none remain.
Run DISM, then SFC
- Open the Start menu.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test WS_FTP again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test. If both commands complete without finding a problem, return to the WS_FTP repair or reinstall steps.

Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent system change
System Restore can help when the error began immediately after an application installation, update, driver change, or other system configuration change. It does not remove personal documents, but it can change installed programs and system settings.

- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
If no suitable restore point exists, return to the WS_FTP installer repair path. System Restore is not a substitute for recovering an old WS_FTP installer.

A driver is not the normal cause of one missing WS_FTP application DLL. Use Device Manager only if the problem began with broader hardware, display, storage, network, or USB failures.
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the failing hardware.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Read the Device status message on the General tab.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For a network-related WS_FTP problem, inspect Network adapters. For storage symptoms, inspect Disk drives and Storage controllers. Do not uninstall a working device driver simply because wsfirscr.dll is missing.
Manually checking many hardware vendors and matching driver packages can be tedious, especially when several devices are outdated. Do not install Windows Features or Visual C++ blindly
Turning Windows Features on or off is not an established fix for wsfirscr.dll. Do not enable random .NET, legacy, or compatibility components merely because a DLL error appeared.

Visual C++ Redistributables can matter when an application has a documented runtime dependency, and the runtime architecture must match the application. However, there is no confirmed universal runtime dependency for every historical wsfirscr.dll build.
If reinstalling WS_FTP does not help, record the exact error and consult the release documentation or software support before installing additional runtimes. Installing unrelated packages can create more version confusion without restoring the missing application module.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
A DLL archive cannot reliably determine which WS_FTP release, build, architecture, or dependency set your installation needs. A downloaded file may be:
- The wrong version
- The wrong architecture
- Modified or damaged
- Missing required dependencies
- Packaged with malware
- Incompatible with the requesting executable
Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or the WS_FTP folder can also hide the original installation problem and make later repairs harder.

- The exact error text.
- The name and full path of the requesting executable.
- The WS_FTP release shown in its installer, shortcut, or program details.
- Whether
wsfirscr.dllexists beside the executable. - Whether Windows Security quarantined the file.
- Whether Repair completed successfully.
- Whether reinstalling the same release changed the error.
- Any Application Error entry in Event Viewer.
To check Event Viewer:
- Press Windows + X.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Look for an error at the time WS_FTP failed.
- Record the faulting application and module names.
If the DLL exists but the error says that a specified module cannot be found, the event details may point to a dependency problem. Reinstalling the complete WS_FTP package remains safer than copying dependencies individually.
