1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorssmspace.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows 8 component, not a normal game or application DLL. If Windows reports that smspace.dll is missing or could not be loaded, repair Windows servicing first rather than downloading a replacement file.
What smspace.dll is
Windows 8 file inventories identify smspace.dll as “Storage Management Provider for Spaces”, a component related to Storage Spaces and the Windows Storage Management API. Microsoft introduced these storage-management components with Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012.
The file is associated mainly with Windows 8 because later Windows inventories generally identify the comparable component as mispace.dll. Microsoft does not publish a current standalone smspace.dll download.
| Check | What it means |
|---|---|
| Windows 8 | smspace.dll is a legacy Storage Spaces component |
| Windows 8.1, 10, or 11 | Check whether the expected file is mispace.dll instead |
| Expected system location | Usually %SystemRoot%System32 for the Windows installation |
| Application folder | A copy beside an old program needs extra scrutiny |
| Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET | Not the normal source of this file |
Do not rename mispace.dll to smspace.dll. Different Windows releases can contain different component names, binaries, and dependencies.

Error messages you may see
The Windows loader may display messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because smspace.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Error loading smspace.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “smspace.dll was not found.”
- “The procedure entry point could not be located in the dynamic link library smspace.dll.”
- “smspace.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These are generic loader messages. There is no dependable evidence tying this filename to one particular game or application.
Also, “the specified module could not be found” does not always mean that smspace.dll itself is absent. A dependency required by the DLL or by the calling program may be missing.
Check the Windows version and file path first
Before changing anything, identify the Windows generation involved.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
winver. - Press Enter.
- Note whether the system is Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows 10, or Windows 11.
Then check the normal system directory:
- Press Windows key + E.
- Select This PC.
- Open the Windows system drive, usually
C:. - Open
Windows, thenSystem32. - Search for
smspace.dll. - On Windows 10 or 11, also search for
mispace.dll.
A 64-bit Windows installation can also contain C:WindowsSysWOW64, which stores many 32-bit system files. Do not copy a file between System32 and SysWOW64 to force an application to start. Windows chooses these directories according to process architecture, and mixing files can create a worse mismatch.
If a copy exists, right-click it, select Properties, and inspect:
- Location
- Details
- Digital Signatures
A genuine system copy should be in a Windows system location and should have a signature that can be inspected. An unexpected copy in a download, temporary, game, or random application folder deserves an antivirus scan.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates
A failed update or incomplete component repair can leave Windows files inconsistent. Update Windows before running repair commands.
On Windows 10 or Windows 11:
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Open Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Check for updates again after restarting.
If the error appears only in an old application after updating, install the latest version of that application from its publisher. Do not assume the application should receive a manually copied Windows DLL.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the main repair path when the Windows component is missing or corrupted. Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker because DISM repairs the component store that SFC uses as a source.
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. It can remain at one percentage for a while.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and retry the affected program.
How to interpret the result
- “The restore operation completed successfully” means DISM completed its repair operation.
- “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations” means SFC found no damaged protected files.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them” means SFC changed files and a restart is required.
- If DISM or SFC reports that it could not repair files, run Windows Update again and repeat the two commands after restarting.
If DISM cannot obtain repair files, use matching Windows installation media as a repair source. The media must correspond to the installed Windows edition and architecture. Microsoft documents the /Source and /LimitAccess options for repairing a Windows image; do not guess a source path or use files from another Windows release.
Running DISM and SFC repeatedly without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting tedious. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the condition and show what needs attention, while repair actions are handled by the full version; Windows servicing remains the definitive fix for a damaged Microsoft component.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine a system file, or malware can damage or replace it.

- Review recent detections involving
smspace.dll,mispace.dll, or the Windows system directory.
Do not restore a quarantined file merely because its name looks familiar. Restore it only when its path, signature, and provenance are verified. If the detection is an actual threat, restoring it can put the threat back on the system. In that case, let Windows servicing replace the component and run a full scan.

Fix 4: Determine whether the error names the wrong file
If the computer runs Windows 8.1, Windows 10, or Windows 11, an old program may be requesting the Windows 8 filename even though the installed operating system uses mispace.dll.
Do this:
- Confirm the Windows version with
winver. - Search
C:WindowsSystem32formispace.dll. - Check whether Windows Update is current.
- Update or reinstall the program that displays the error using its official installer.
- Contact that program’s publisher if the current release still requests
smspace.dll.
Do not rename mispace.dll, copy it into an application folder, or replace a Windows 10 or Windows 11 binary with a Windows 8 file. A procedure-entry-point error, bad-image error, or “not designed to run on Windows” message usually indicates an incompatible or mismatched binary.
Fix 5: Repair or reinstall the affected application
If the error occurs only when launching one old program, the program may be damaged or obsolete even though smspace.dll is a Windows component.
Try the application’s own repair option:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the program.
- If it still fails, select Reset only after confirming that its local data is backed up.
For a traditional desktop program:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select the application.
- Choose Repair or Change, if offered.
If repair is unavailable, uninstall and reinstall the application from its publisher’s official installer. Reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is not the default remedy for smspace.dll, because this filename belongs to Windows storage management rather than a known redistributable package.
Fix 6: Check storage and drivers only when Windows reports a storage problem
A missing management DLL does not normally require a storage-driver reinstall. Use Device Manager only if Storage Spaces or Windows also reports a hardware, controller, or storage-subsystem failure.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Storage controllers, Disk drives, and System devices.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the relevant device and select Properties.
- Read the Device status message on the General tab.
- Use Update driver only when the device manufacturer or Windows Update provides a suitable driver.
Do not remove a storage controller or disk device casually. If a driver update is genuinely required, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify the installation that needs attention, while the full version performs the driver installation; it is not a substitute for repairing smspace.dll itself.
Fix 7: Use System Restore
If the error began after an update, software installation, or system change, System Restore may return Windows to an earlier restore point.

If DISM, SFC, updates, and System Restore do not resolve the problem, use an in-place repair installation from matching Windows media. Start the installer while signed in to Windows and choose the option that keeps personal files and applications when it is offered.
On Windows 11, Microsoft also provides a repair-reinstall option:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
Windows 8 support ended in January 2016, and Windows 8.1 support ended on January 10, 2023. If the affected computer still runs either release, moving to a supported Windows version is the long-term repair rather than continuing to replace legacy files.
What not to do
Do not download smspace.dll from a DLL website
Random DLL downloads can contain malware, the wrong Windows build, the wrong architecture, or a modified file. Even a clean file may not fix the missing dependency, servicing corruption, or obsolete application that caused the error.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, matching Windows installation media, or the official installer for the affected program instead.

Do not run regsvr32 as a general fix
regsvr32 smspace.dll is normally inappropriate. regsvr32 is intended for registerable COM or ActiveX DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A Windows Storage Management component is not automatically repaired by registering it.
Do not reset Storage Spaces
A missing management DLL is not a reason to reset a pool, remove a drive, or format Storage Spaces disks. Those operations can permanently delete data. Protect the pool and its files first, and repair Windows without changing the storage configuration.

FAQ
Is smspace.dll a virus?
The filename itself is a legitimate legacy Microsoft Windows component. A copy in an unexpected folder, an invalid signature, or an antivirus detection still requires investigation.
Is smspace.dll part of Windows 10 or Windows 11?
The current presence of smspace.dll on Windows 10 and Windows 11 is not established. Later inventories generally identify the comparable Storage Spaces component as mispace.dll.
Should I install Visual C++ or DirectX?
Not as the first step. smspace.dll is a Windows Storage Spaces component, not a normal Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET redistributable file.
Why does the message say the specified module could not be found?
The named DLL may be present while one of its dependencies is missing or incompatible. DISM and SFC repair the Windows component store and protected system files; application repair addresses a damaged caller.
