wow64cpu.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component used by WoW64, the compatibility layer that runs 32-bit x86 programs on 64-bit Windows. Do not download a replacement DLL from a random website. The correct repair depends on whether one application fails or every 32-bit application fails.
Which fix applies to you
Use this list before changing anything:
- Only one game or program fails: Repair or reinstall that application first. Its files, launcher, working directory, or compatibility settings may be damaged.
- Several 32-bit programs fail: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC, then restart and install pending Windows updates.
- The error began after an update or cleanup: Retry Windows Update, use System Restore if available, or perform a Windows repair reinstall.
- The file exists but says “not designed to run on Windows”: Suspect corruption, a wrong-architecture file, damaged dependencies, or tampering. Do not register or replace it manually.
- Windows Security quarantined a file: Check Protection history before restoring anything. Restore only when the file is in the expected Windows location and has a valid Microsoft signature.
- You use ARM64 or 32-bit Windows: The usual x64 WoW64 explanation may not apply. Check your system type and the program’s supported architecture.
What wow64cpu.dll does
WoW64 allows 32-bit x86 applications to run on 64-bit x64 editions of Windows. Microsoft documents Wow64Cpu.dll as the x64-specific CPU support component of WoW64, alongside other Windows compatibility components.
On x64 Windows, the file normally belongs in:
%SystemRoot%System32wow64cpu.dll
This is a common source of confusion. On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains native 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. The name SysWOW64 does not mean that every WoW64 file belongs there.

wow64cpu.dll is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, .NET file, graphics-driver file, or game-specific library. Exact versions and file sizes vary by Windows edition, architecture, build, and servicing level, so there is no safe universal version or size to compare.
Fix 1: Repair the affected application
Use this first when only one game, installer, or program reports the error.
Repair the program from Settings
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the program again.
If Repair is unavailable or does not help, select Reset only if you understand that it may remove the program’s local settings or data.
Some desktop applications do not provide these controls. In that case:
- Open the application’s launcher.
- Look for Verify files, Repair, or Scan and repair.
- Run that operation.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
If the application still fails, uninstall it from Settings > Apps > Installed apps, restart Windows, and reinstall it using the publisher’s official installer. Do not copy wow64cpu.dll into the game or program folder. The application may be exposing a Windows problem, but it does not own this Windows component.
Check application architecture
Review the program’s system requirements. A 32-bit x86 program normally relies on WoW64 when running on x64 Windows. A program or driver built for an unsupported architecture can produce a misleading loader message.
To check Windows:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Read System type.
A 32-bit x86 installation of Windows does not use the x64 WoW64 layer. ARM64 Windows uses a different compatibility implementation, including files documented by Microsoft such as wowarmw.dll. If the application does not support your Windows architecture, reinstalling this DLL will not solve the problem.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Use this when multiple 32-bit programs fail, the file is absent from its expected location, or the problem started after failed servicing, an update, disk error, cleanup utility, or security incident.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files against that repaired source. Run them in this order.

Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish.
The command may appear to pause for a while. Do not close the window simply because the percentage does not change immediately.
Run System File Checker
In the same elevated Command Prompt, enter:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait for verification to reach 100 percent. Restart Windows when it completes, then test the program again.
A successful result may say that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them. If SFC says it found no integrity violations, the Windows files it checked are intact, and the cause may be the application, architecture, driver, or a deeper servicing problem.

If DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, Microsoft documents using a matching repair source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace the example path only with a compatible Windows installation source matching your edition and build. Do not use a random folder or an image from a different Windows release.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow. Outbyte PC Repair can show the problems its free scan detects, while repair actions are performed by the full version; it is optional, and Windows repair commands remain the appropriate first step.
Fix 3: Install pending Windows updates
A failed or incomplete component update can leave protected files unavailable.

- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Return to Windows Update and check again until no further updates are offered.
- Test the affected program.
If Windows Update repeatedly fails, record the update error and continue to the repair-reinstall options below rather than downloading an individual DLL.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus action is possible, but a detection does not prove that the Microsoft component was wrongly removed.
- Open Windows Security from Start.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries related to
wow64cpu.dll. - Check the reported path, detection name, and action taken.
Do not disable antivirus protection to force the program to start. Restore a quarantined file only when its path is the expected Windows system location, its Microsoft digital signature is valid, and the detection is clearly a false positive. Otherwise, leave it quarantined and repair Windows with DISM and SFC. Run a full scan if malware damage is plausible.

Fix 5: Update a related driver only when evidence points to it
A crash mentioning wow64cpu.dll does not prove that this DLL is defective. If the problem began after a graphics, chipset, storage, or other driver change, update or roll back that specific driver.
To check Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the suspected device.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Check the driver provider and date.
- Use Update Driver or Roll Back Driver when the option is appropriate.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Use the device manufacturer’s official support channel for drivers. Do not replace wow64cpu.dll with a driver package.
Manually hunting through hardware pages and matching driver versions can be time-consuming. Outbyte Driver Updater can show outdated drivers in its free scan, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and does not replace repairing the affected application or Windows component.
Fix 6: Use Windows recovery when repair commands fail
Reinstall the current Windows version on Windows 11
On supported Windows 11 installations:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
This option reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. It may be unavailable because of the Windows edition, device-management policies, installed updates, or system configuration.
Recommended Free Tools
Perform an in-place repair installation
If the Windows 11 recovery option is unavailable, use official Windows installation media that matches your installation.
- Start Windows normally.
- Open the installation media from within Windows.
- Run
setup.exe. - Follow the setup prompts.
- Choose Keep personal files and apps when asked.
- Complete the installation and test the program.
Do not boot from the media for this repair if your goal is to preserve applications and files. A clean installation has different consequences and should not be the first response to one missing component.
Try System Restore
If the problem began after a recent driver, application, cleanup tool, or update and a suitable restore point exists:
- Open Start.
- Type recovery.
- Open Recovery.
- Select Open System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem.
- Review affected programs.
- Confirm the restore.
Back up important files before broader recovery work.

SysWOW64. - Download a replacement from a DLL website.
- Install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET solely because this filename appears.
- Disable antivirus protection to bypass the error.
Manual downloads can contain malware, use the wrong architecture, have mismatched servicing metadata, or fail to fix the underlying component store.
If the error remains
If DISM, SFC, Windows updates, and an in-place repair do not resolve the problem:
- Check Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application for the failure record.
- Review application compatibility and the program’s supported Windows versions.
- Inspect
CBS.logfor servicing failures. - Check the drive for broader filesystem or storage errors.
- Run a complete malware scan.
- Contact the application publisher if only one program fails.
- Back up important files before further recovery work.
A persistent error naming wow64cpu.dll may be where the loader failure surfaced, not proof that the DLL itself is the original cause.
FAQ
Is wow64cpu.dll safe?
It is a genuine Microsoft Windows WoW64 component when it is in the expected Windows system location and has a valid Microsoft digital signature. The filename alone is not proof of authenticity.
Should I download wow64cpu.dll?
No. Use Windows servicing, DISM, SFC, Windows Update, or a Windows repair installation. Do not use random DLL download sites sites.
Should I install Visual C++ or DirectX?
Not for this file specifically. Those packages repair their own runtimes and do not replace a missing WoW64 system component.
Why does a 32-bit game mention this file?
A 32-bit x86 program running on 64-bit Windows uses WoW64. A failure in the program, its dependencies, or Windows compatibility layer can therefore produce an error mentioning a WoW64 component.

Possible causes include Windows component corruption, failed servicing, security quarantine, filesystem damage, or an architecture mismatch. Repair Windows rather than copying a replacement.
Does every Windows computer use this exact file?
No. The documented x64 WoW64 layer applies to x64 Windows. 32-bit Windows has no x64 WoW64 layer, and ARM64 Windows uses a different implementation.
What if only one application fails?
Repair or reinstall that application using its official installer or launcher repair function. If every 32-bit program fails, prioritize DISM, SFC, Windows Update, and architecture checks.
