Snack World: The Dungeon Crawl – Gold is a colorful, funny action RPG with a satisfying mix of dungeon loot, equipment switching, and creature collecting. Its charm gives familiar crawling a distinctive personality, but repeated trips through locations and a forgiving challenge can wear thin—especially for experienced dungeon-crawler players.
What is Snack World: The Dungeon Crawl – Gold?
Released for Nintendo Switch on February 14, 2020, Gold is an action RPG about taking quests, exploring randomly generated dungeons, and collecting treasure while pursuing revenge against Sultan Vinegar. Nintendo lists LEVEL5 as publisher and LEVEL-5 Inc. as developer. The Gold edition includes the downloadable content released for the original Japanese version, according to Nintendo’s US digital listing.
The game’s systems revolve around two kinds of collectibles. “Jaras” are equipment and consumables: weapons, shields, healing tonics, and colognes that grant status buffs. You can switch their effects during combat. “Snacks” are snapshots of creatures and characters that can be summoned to help in battle. Together with character customization and quest rewards, these systems give each dungeon run a steady stream of things to find and try.
What do reviews say about the game?
Reviews agree most clearly on the game’s personality and its friction: its presentation and humor make the familiar dungeon-crawling loop appealing, while repetition and limited challenge can undermine the appeal over time.

The strongest case for playing
In a review of the European version published February 13, 2020, Chris Scullion of Nintendo Life awarded the game 8/10. He praised its colorful visuals, music, character designs, dialogue, and silly humor, as well as an auto-equip feature that helps newcomers prepare for missions. Scullion summed up its appeal this way: “Snack World serves up a beautifully presented helping of dungeon crawling, garnished with generous amounts of humour and charm.” Read the Nintendo Life review.
Why some players may tire of it
Nintendo Life’s main reservations were that returning to locations makes the game feel repetitive and that its challenge may be too easy for more experienced players. A Metacritic excerpt from Hardcore Gamer’s February 20, 2020 review praised the variety and fun it offers, even without a serious story. Those reactions point to the key question for prospective players: whether the game’s jokes, collectibles, and equipment tinkering are enough to make repeat dungeon runs enjoyable.

How broad is the critical response?
Metacritic’s Nintendo Switch critic page showed a 68 Metascore, categorized as “Mixed or Average,” when accessed on October 8, 2026. Its snapshot listed 45 critic reviews: 16 positive (36%), 26 mixed (59%), and 2 negative (5%). This is an aggregator snapshot, not a permanent score; the page may change. Is Snack World Gold repetitive?
It can be. The game asks you to revisit locations, and its randomly generated dungeons do not prevent the broader routine from feeling familiar. Loot, jaras, and summonable Snacks provide reasons to keep experimenting, but they do not erase the repetition. If you enjoy repeating runs to improve your gear and collect new allies, the loop may be part of the appeal. If you need a steady stream of new environments or escalating difficulty, it is a notable drawback.

Nintendo says up to four players can team up locally or online. Its product listing describes multiplayer as a way to take on quests and formidable enemies. The available description establishes the player limit and local/online options, but not whether every part of the main campaign supports co-op, so check the game’s current in-game multiplayer details if campaign-wide co-op is essential to your purchase.
Is Snack World Gold good for kids?
The US Nintendo listing gives the game ESRB descriptors of Fantasy Violence, Mild Language, and Suggestive Themes. Nintendo Life also cautioned that some jokes and innuendo may surprise parents, despite the bright, cartoonish presentation. The humor is a central part of the game’s appeal, so parents should consider both the rating descriptors and whether that tone suits the child in question.

Which version is listed, and how much space does it need?
Nintendo’s cited US store page is for the digital Nintendo Switch edition and lists a 6.7 GB file size. That listing confirms neither current physical-cartridge availability nor inventory in other regions; check the retailer and region-specific listing for the format you want.
