PlayStation’s “1 player” label is a store feature listing, not a statistic about the game or a claim that only one person can ever play it. The same listing separately describes campaign play with a partner. Xbox likewise identifies single-player support while selling the same game for its console platforms.
How to stop another player from entering your campaign

That statement is time-sensitive, so it should not be treated as a permanent prediction about future releases. Do you need an online subscription to play solo?
The PlayStation US store listing says that PlayStation Plus is required for online play. That requirement applies to the listing’s online-play context; it does not establish a universal subscription requirement for solo play on every platform.

In practical terms, do not assume that a PlayStation Plus requirement for online features means the single-player campaign itself has the same requirement. The available platform descriptions confirm the solo campaign but do not provide one cross-platform rule covering internet access, subscriptions or account requirements for solo sessions.
If you plan to use campaign co-op or Invasion Mode on PlayStation, check the current PlayStation store information for your region and edition because those are online features. If you only intend to play the campaign alone, the official listings support that mode but do not state a universal online requirement that can be applied to PC, Xbox and PlayStation alike.
Step-by-step setup for a private solo run
- Confirm your edition. Use the platform version for Steam, Windows Store, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5 listed by Rebellion.
- Start the game. Enter the campaign rather than arranging a co-op session with a partner.
- Open Options. The setting controlling campaign invasions is located in the game’s Options menu.

- Play the campaign alone. You can leave co-op unused and progress through the story as a solo player.

You expected co-op but started alone
Solo campaign play is the default answer to the single-player question, while campaign co-op is a separate way to play with a partner. Starting the campaign alone does not imply that a co-op partner will be added automatically.

Play the campaign solo and set Invasion Mode to OFF. The campaign is explicitly described as playable alone, so a partner is optional rather than required.

“Can I invite a friend later?”
Yes. The campaign supports playing with a partner, so solo and co-op are selectable approaches to the same campaign rather than competing game editions.
“Can another player challenge me while I am playing alone?”
That possibility is tied to Invasion Mode. Rebellion says you can switch the feature off in Options; set it to OFF when you want the campaign to remain a solo experience.
“Does the one-player label mean there is no multiplayer?”
