“This application failed to start because snjrt11.dll was not found”
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The snjrt11.dll file is an obsolete 32-bit Windows component associated with Symantec’s native Java runtime technology. If snjrt11.dll is missing, the safest repair is usually to identify the old application that installed it and repair or reinstall that complete application.
Do not begin by downloading a loose copy of the DLL and placing it in C:WindowsSystem32. snjrt11.dll is not a Windows system file, Microsoft runtime, DirectX component, .NET file, or modern Java Runtime Environment file.
Which fix applies to you
Use the description that best matches what happened:
- The error names a program you still use: Repair or reinstall that program from its original installer, vendor media, or a trustworthy archived installer.
- The error appeared after an antivirus alert: Check Windows Security Protection History before changing anything. Restore the file only if the application and installer are trusted.
- You copied or moved the program manually: Reinstall it to its intended location. A copied executable may be missing companion DLLs or the correct PATH configuration.
- The error appeared after verifying or updating a game: Use the launcher’s Verify, Repair, Scan and repair, or equivalent function.
- The program is an old Symantec or Java-based Windows tool: Restore the complete Symantec runtime set, not only
snjrt11.dll. - The message says “The specified module could not be found”: The named file may exist but one of its dependent DLLs may be missing.
- The message says the file is “not designed to run on Windows”: The binary may be damaged, incompatible, or the wrong architecture. Reinstall the original application.
- Several unrelated Windows programs are failing: Run DISM and SFC after repairing the affected application.
- You cannot identify the program that requested the DLL: Find the launching executable first. If no legitimate application owner can be found, isolate or uninstall the obsolete software rather than sourcing a random DLL.
What snjrt11.dll belongs to
The description commonly associated with the file is Symantec Native Java Core Runtime (Release Version). Public metadata also associates it with a product label written as Symantec Natjve Java Kit. That spelling appears to be a metadata label rather than a reliable current product name.

Historically, Symantec Visual Café and related Symantec Native Java Kit components used native Win32 Java runtime DLLs. Other legacy software packages also bundled the file or companion files, including some Rational Unified Process tools, the Global Forest Products Model, and particular Unreal Tournament-related installations.
Those examples do not prove which program installed the file on your computer. The same DLL name can appear in more than one old application, so the correct repair depends on the program shown in the error.
Common messages include:
This application failed to start because snjrt11.dll was not found.
The program can't start because snjrt11.dll is missing from your computer.
Error loading snjrt11.dll. The specified module could not be found.
The file snjrt11.dll is missing or corrupted.
A required component is missing: snjrt11.dll.
snjrt11.dll is not designed to run on Windows or contains an error.
The wording is useful, but it is not a diagnosis by itself. “The specified module could not be found” can mean that snjrt11.dll is absent, or that Windows could not find a dependency required by that DLL.
1. Identify the affected application
Start with the window that displays the error. Write down:
- The name of the application or game.
- The executable name shown in the title bar or error details.
- The folder from which the program is being launched.
- Whether the failure occurs during startup, when opening a project, or after selecting a particular feature.
If the error appears before the program window opens, locate the shortcut that launches it:
- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Read the Target field.
- Note the executable path and the Start in folder.
The affected folder may contain files such as snjawt11.dll, snjzip11.dll, snjres11.dll, or other Symantec Java runtime components. Their presence is a useful clue that the program owns the missing runtime.
You can also search installed applications:
- Open Settings with
Win+I. - Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps & features in Windows 10.
- Search for the program named in the error.
- If it is not listed, check its old installation folders, Start menu shortcuts, desktop shortcuts, and game launchers.
Do not assume that every installation of a particular game or tool requires snjrt11.dll. Confirm the executable and installation folder on the affected computer.
2. Repair the owning application first
Repairing the application is the most likely solution because snjrt11.dll was normally distributed as part of an application’s runtime rather than as a Windows component.
Recommended Free Tools
Use Windows app repair
For a supported application:
- Open Settings with
Win+I. - Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
The repair option may preserve settings and personal data. If it does not restore the file, return to the same screen and use Reset only after checking the program’s documentation and backing up any important application data.
Use Programs and Features
Older desktop applications often use their own installer instead:
- Press
Win+R. - Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Repair, Change, or Modify, if available.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Not every legacy installer provides a repair option. If the only available choice is uninstall, obtain the original installer or installation media before removing the program.
Reinstall from a trustworthy source
If repair fails:
- Back up the application’s documents, saved games, projects, and configuration files.
- Uninstall the affected program from Settings > Apps > Installed apps, or from Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the program again from its original vendor media, the publisher’s official installer, or a trustworthy archived installer.
- Install it into the intended folder rather than copying files from another computer.
- Start it from the newly created shortcut.
A complete reinstall should restore snjrt11.dll and its companion files together. There is no verified current official Symantec download page for snjrt11.dll as a standalone file.
If the application is very old, right-click its installer or shortcut, select Properties, open Compatibility, and test an appropriate compatibility mode only after reinstalling. Compatibility mode can help an old program run, but it cannot recreate a missing runtime.
3. Verify or repair a game or launcher installation
If the message appears after starting a game, mod tool, or launcher:
- Open the launcher used to install the program.
- Open its library or installed-games list.
- Select the affected title.
- Open its settings or management menu.
- Choose Verify files, Repair, Scan and repair, or the equivalent option.
- Wait for the process to finish.
- Start the program from the launcher.
The exact label differs between launchers. This process is preferable to downloading snjrt11.dll because it checks the application’s complete file set and restores files from the publisher’s distribution.
If verification reports that files cannot be restored, uninstall and reinstall the affected title or tool. Also check whether a mod, unofficial patch, or manually copied executable is launching a different installation than the one managed by the launcher.

4. Check Windows Security Protection History
Antivirus software may quarantine a legitimate old runtime, or it may correctly detect a modified or malicious file. Do not restore the file automatically.
To inspect Microsoft Defender’s records:
- Open Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Select Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review entries that mention the affected application folder or
snjrt11.dll.
If the file was quarantined:
- Confirm that the application came from a legitimate installer or original media.
- Scan the entire application folder.
- Scan the installer or installation media.
- Confirm that the file belongs to the expected program.
- Restore it only when the source is trusted.
- Repair or reinstall the application afterward if other runtime files were removed.
Reinstalling from verified original media is safer than restoring an isolated file from an unknown source. If Defender continues to detect the file, leave it quarantined and investigate the application rather than adding a broad exclusion.
5. Restore the complete runtime folder
A program that reports snjrt11.dll may require several files from the same historical runtime. Possible companion names include:
snjawt11.dllsnjzip11.dllsnjres11.dll- Other Symantec Java runtime DLLs supplied with the application
Check the program’s installation directory, not the Windows system folders. If snjrt11.dll is present there but the error remains, check the following:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Confirm that the launching executable is in the same installation you inspected.
- Look for a second copy of the program under
Program Files,Program Files (x86), an old game folder, or a custom location. - Check whether the application was moved after installation.
- Restore the original folder structure from the installer.
- Reinstall instead of copying individual DLLs.
- If the program uses a configured PATH, restore the PATH entries created by its installer.
Some historical Symantec Java applications used their own class-registration mechanism. Documentation for those applications referred to a Symantec utility named SNJREG. That is different from registering an ordinary COM DLL with Microsoft regsvr32.
6. Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
The available historical evidence identifies snjrt11.dll as a 32-bit Win32 component. A 64-bit Windows installation can run many 32-bit applications, but a 64-bit replacement DLL is not interchangeable with a 32-bit one.
Check the application architecture indirectly:
- Programs installed under
C:Program Files (x86)are commonly 32-bit. - Programs installed under
C:Program Filesmay be 64-bit or 32-bit. - The installation folder alone is a clue, not proof.
- The application’s original documentation or installer is the authoritative source.
Do not place a downloaded copy in either C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. On 64-bit Windows, those folders have specific system-loader purposes, and placing an unverified third-party DLL there can create version conflicts or hide the actual missing dependency.
If the original application includes a 32-bit runtime, keep that runtime with the application and run the application using its supplied launcher. Do not substitute a modern Java installation, Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET for Symantec’s native Java runtime. These are separate technologies and are not verified replacements for snjrt11.dll.

7. Investigate a dependency failure
If the file exists but Windows still reports that the specified module cannot be found, the missing item may be a dependency.
Use this sequence:
- Confirm that
snjrt11.dllis in the application’s expected folder. - Confirm that the application executable is launching from that folder.
- Restore all companion DLLs from the original installer.
- Remove duplicate or manually copied runtime files from the application directory only after backing up the folder.
- Reinstall the application so its files and configuration are recreated.
- Check whether the application requires an old Java environment or other vendor-supplied component.
- Run the program from its original shortcut rather than directly opening a copied executable.
Avoid downloading individual dependencies from random DLL sites. Replacing one file can simply cause Windows to report the next missing file, and a mismatched file can make the program fail with a different loader error.
8. Do not use regsvr32 for this runtime
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose the registration entry point expected by Windows, such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose command for fixing every missing DLL.
snjrt11.dll belongs to a historical Symantec Java runtime. Its documented registration process used Symantec’s SNJREG utility for Symantec Java classes, not ordinary COM registration with regsvr32.

9. Repair broader Windows component corruption
DISM and SFC normally repair protected Windows components. They do not usually recreate a third-party Symantec DLL, so use them as secondary checks when other Windows files or applications are also behaving incorrectly.
First update Windows and restart the computer. Then:

- Restart Windows and test the affected application.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the program again. If it reports that it could not repair everything, restart and repeat the application repair steps. Do not expect these commands to supply snjrt11.dll when the owning application is missing it.
Repeatedly hunting for corrupted components and interpreting long command output can be time-consuming. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what needs attention, while repair actions are handled by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix for this app-owned DLL.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.10. Check recent system changes with System Restore
Use System Restore only when the error began after a known system or software change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press
Win+R. - Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the failure.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the programs and drivers that may be changed.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not replace a proper application reinstall. If the program was already incomplete, moved, or removed, reinstalling it from its original source is more appropriate.
11. Check drivers only when the symptoms point to a driver problem
A display, storage, or chipset driver normally does not provide snjrt11.dll. Driver work is relevant only when the DLL error began alongside graphics failures, device errors, crashes, or a major hardware change.
To inspect drivers:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, Storage controllers, or Network adapters.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Note the provider and driver date.
- Use Update Driver, Roll Back Driver, or uninstall and restart only when appropriate.
- Prefer the computer or device manufacturer’s official driver package.
Manually checking every device and comparing versions can involve hunting through manufacturer pages and guessing which driver is stale. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and cannot replace the legacy application runtime.
Windows Features are not a substitute for this DLL either. You may open Settings > Optional features > More Windows features to inspect installed Windows components, but enabling .NET, legacy components, or modern Java-related software will not be expected to recreate snjrt11.dll. Only enable a Windows feature when the affected program’s own documentation specifically requires it.
12. If the original installer is unavailable
When the application owner is known but its installer cannot be found:
- Search your original installation media, backups, and archived vendor media.
- Identify the exact application and release before restoring anything.
- Check the publisher’s official support or download resources.
- Ask the organization that supplied the software for its installation package.
- Back up application data before testing an archived installer.
- Scan both the installer and installed directory.
- Install the complete program rather than copying
snjrt11.dll.
Treat exact version, file size, hash, and “latest” claims found in public file listings as unverified unless the file can be traced to the original application media. Conflicting metadata is common for obsolete DLLs.
If no legitimate installer or application owner can be identified, uninstall the obsolete program or keep it isolated. A random DLL download may contain malware, may be the wrong architecture, or may fail because another dependency is missing.
Prevention after the repair
Once the application works:
- Keep an installer or verified backup of the complete application.
- Back up the application’s data separately from its program folder.
- Avoid moving installed programs manually.
- Use the application’s installer when relocating it.
- Do not delete unfamiliar DLLs during disk cleanup.
- Review antivirus quarantine before permanently removing old application files.
- Use launcher verification after updates or interrupted installations.
- Keep obsolete software isolated when it no longer has vendor support.
- Avoid placing third-party DLLs in Windows system folders.
- Record the application folder and any required compatibility settings.
FAQ
Is snjrt11.dll a Windows 10 or Windows 11 system file?
No. It is a historical third-party application DLL associated with Symantec native Java technology. Windows Update is not expected to provide it.
Should I copy it to System32?
No. Restore it to the application folder through the original installer or a repair operation. On 64-bit Windows, do not use System32 or SysWOW64 as a substitute for the program’s intended directory.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Can modern Java fix the error?
There is no verified evidence that a current Java Runtime Environment can replace this native Symantec Java DLL. Restore the runtime supplied with the affected legacy program.
Will Visual C++ Redistributable or DirectX provide it?
No verified evidence supports that. Those packages serve different components and should not be treated as replacements for snjrt11.dll.
Can a 64-bit computer run the application?
Often, 64-bit Windows can run older 32-bit applications. The application still needs its correct 32-bit runtime and companion files. A 64-bit DLL cannot replace a 32-bit DLL.
What does “not designed to run on Windows” mean?
It usually indicates that the binary is damaged, incompatible, incomplete, or the wrong architecture. It does not by itself prove malware. Reinstall the owning application and restore its complete runtime.
Should I run regsvr32?
Generally, no. This runtime used a Symantec-specific Java registration process historically associated with SNJREG, not ordinary COM DLL registration.
Why does the error remain when the file is present?
A dependency may be missing, the wrong executable may be launching, the application may have been moved, or the file may be damaged. Reinstall the complete application and inspect its companion runtime files rather than replacing only the named DLL.
