Start with this quick diagnosis
Before changing Windows, note:
- Which program displays the error
- Whether it appears at startup or only when you open a monitoring or management tool
- The complete message, such as “snmpsmir.dll was not found” or “could not be loaded”
- Whether you use 32-bit or 64-bit Windows
- Whether the problem began after a Windows upgrade, feature removal, antivirus alert, or repair
- Whether SNMP and WMI SNMP Provider appear under Windows Optional Features
snmpsmir.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component. It is the WMI SNMP MIB Repository, part of the Windows Management Instrumentation SNMP infrastructure, not a general application runtime used by games or ordinary desktop software.
The safest repair is to restore the Windows SNMP components through Optional Features. Do not begin by downloading an isolated DLL.

What snmpsmir.dll does
SNMP is used by monitoring, inventory, network-management, and some older server-management software. WMI provides a Windows management interface, while the WMI SNMP Provider acts as a bridge between SNMP data and WMI classes.
The related SNMP Management Information Base data is compiled into a repository. Microsoft documents the smi2smir utility for managing SNMP modules and repositories in its WMI SNMP documentation.

Activation may require an existing digital license or a separately purchased valid product key. Back up important files before installation or repair.
That explains why this file usually matters to:
- Network monitoring software
- Hardware or asset inventory tools
- Legacy administration utilities
- Older Windows management applications
- Programs that query SNMP devices through WMI
It is not normally repaired by installing Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, or .NET.
SNMP and WMI SNMP Provider are optional, deprecated Windows features. Deprecation does not mean an existing installation is automatically broken, and Microsoft still documents how to install them on Windows 10 and Windows 11.
Fix 1: Install SNMP and WMI SNMP Provider
This is the most likely fix if the file disappeared after a clean Windows installation, upgrade, optional-feature cleanup, or Windows repair.
Install through Settings
- Press Windows + I.
- Select System.
- Select Optional features.
- Choose View features or Add a feature, depending on your Windows build.
- Search for Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP).
- Select it and choose Next, then Install.
- Return to the Optional Features page.
- Add WMI SNMP Provider.
- Restart Windows.
After restarting, open the program that produced the error. If it starts normally, the missing Windows component was the cause.
Check Optional features history if installation appears to complete but the program still reports the file as missing. The feature may have failed to install or may require another restart.
Microsoft’s current installation instructions are in its guide for installing SNMP and WMI SNMP Provider on Windows 10 and Windows 11.
Install with PowerShell
If Settings does not show the features, open PowerShell as administrator:
- Open Start.
- Type PowerShell.
- Right-click Windows PowerShell.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run these commands separately:
Add-WindowsCapability -Online -Name "SNMP.Client~~~~0.0.1.0"
Add-WindowsCapability -Online -Name "WMI-SNMP-Provider.Client~~~~0.0.1.0"
Restart Windows after both commands finish.
To check their state, run:
Get-WindowsCapability -Online -Name "SNMP.Client~~~~0.0.1.0"
Get-WindowsCapability -Online -Name "WMI-SNMP-Provider.Client~~~~0.0.1.0"
Both should report:
State : Installed
If either state is NotPresent, install that capability again. If installation returns an error, continue to the DISM repair section below and then retry.
Do not use the old DISM feature command first
You may find this older command suggested elsewhere:
dism /online /enable-feature /featureName:SNMP /featureName:WMISnmpProvider
On Windows 10 and Windows 11, it can fail with error 0x800f080c because these feature names may no longer be available through the older feature mechanism. Use Add-WindowsCapability instead.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
If SNMP is installed but snmpsmir.dll is missing, damaged, or unable to load, the Windows component store or a protected system file may be corrupted.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Open Command Prompt as administrator:
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. It can take time and may appear to pause.
Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows when both commands finish.
DISM repairs the Windows image that SFC uses as a source. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies where possible. Microsoft describes this recommended order in its DISM and SFC repair procedure.
A successful result from SFC may say that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them. Reopen the affected program after restarting.
If DISM says that source files could not be found, install pending Windows updates and try again. If Windows Update cannot supply the repair files, a matching Microsoft installation image may be required.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing whether the component store changed can make troubleshooting tedious. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what needs attention, while the full version performs its repair; it is optional, and Microsoft servicing remains the authoritative fix for this Windows component.
Run a targeted SFC check
If you have confirmed the file’s path and the file is present, Microsoft’s SFC command also supports a targeted scan:
sfc /scanfile=C:WindowsSystem32wbemsnmpsmir.dll
Use the actual confirmed path rather than assuming this location applies to every Windows installation. Microsoft documents the syntax in its SFC command reference.
If the file is not present, a targeted scan cannot restore it by itself. Reinstall the SNMP and WMI SNMP Provider capabilities, then run DISM and SFC.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a legitimate Windows file after a false detection or a damaged update.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an action involving
snmpsmir.dll. - Expand the detection and review its location and action.
Do not restore the file simply because its name looks familiar. Restore it only if:
- It is in a normal Windows component location
- Its Microsoft digital signature is valid
- You have confirmed that the detection is a false positive
- The Windows component itself is installed
Microsoft explains the risks and available actions in its guide to Protection History.
If you are uncertain, leave the file quarantined and reinstall the Windows capabilities instead. A properly serviced copy is safer than manually restoring a quarantined file.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix 4: Verify the file instead of trusting its name
A file named snmpsmir.dll is not automatically safe. Malware can use the same filename.
Right-click the file and select Properties. Check:
- The Digital Signatures tab
- The signer name
- Whether Windows reports that the signature is valid
- The file location
- The Details tab, including its description
The description should identify the WMI SNMP MIB Repository, but the name and description alone are not proof of authenticity.
Microsoft’s Sysinternals Sigcheck can inspect file version information and digital signatures. Use it to examine a suspicious copy rather than replacing a signed Windows file with one from an unknown source.

Fix 5: Do not download or manually copy the DLL
Do not download snmpsmir.dll from a random DLL website and copy it into:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- An application’s installation folder
That approach can install malware, the wrong Windows build, the wrong architecture, or a file with incompatible dependencies. It also bypasses Windows servicing, so the same problem can return during an update.
Microsoft does not provide a general standalone download page for this file. The safe sources are:
- Windows Optional Features
- Windows Update
- DISM using Windows servicing
- A matching Microsoft Windows installation image or update package under controlled repair conditions
A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows does not mean you should place a manually downloaded file in SysWOW64. Windows uses those directories according to its architecture and redirection rules. Let Windows component servicing provide the correct files.

Fix 6: Do not register snmpsmir.dll with regsvr32
regsvr32 is not a universal DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs and OCX files that are designed as self-registering COM components and expose the required registration entry point.
There is no Microsoft instruction identifying snmpsmir.dll as a file that should be manually registered. Running commands such as these is therefore not a normal repair:
regsvr32 snmpsmir.dll
regsvr32 C:WindowsSystem32wbemsnmpsmir.dll
They may produce an error such as a missing entry point, or create the impression that the file is broken when registration was never required. Restore the Windows feature and repair system files instead. Microsoft explains the limited scope of DLL registration in its DLL and OCX registration guidance.
Fix 7: Repair the program that triggered the message
If Windows reports that both capabilities are installed and system-file checks are clean, the requesting application may be damaged or may expect an older SNMP implementation.

- Find the monitoring, inventory, or management program.
- Open its menu.
- Choose Modify, Repair, or Advanced options, if available.
- Restart Windows and test again.
If no repair option exists, uninstall and reinstall the application from its official vendor source after confirming that SNMP and WMI SNMP Provider are installed.
The application may also have an outdated dependency or configuration that cannot work with the current deprecated feature. Check the vendor’s current support documentation rather than adding a DLL manually.
Fix 8: Check updates and related drivers only when indicated
Windows Update can repair optional components and replace damaged system files.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
Device Manager is not normally the solution for snmpsmir.dll. This is a Windows SNMP/WMI component, not a graphics, audio, chipset, or game driver. Do not reinstall unrelated drivers merely because the error appears when a program starts.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If the complete error identifies a vendor management agent or a device-specific driver, update that driver through:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
Hunting through many driver packages is unnecessary when the actual problem is a missing Windows capability. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention, while the full version performs driver installation; it is optional and not a replacement for restoring SNMP through Windows.
Fix 9: Use System Restore or Windows repair
Use System Restore when:
- SNMP was installed before the problem began
- The error followed a failed update or cleanup
- DISM and SFC cannot repair Windows
- A suitable restore point exists
Press Windows + R, type:
rstrui.exe
Press Enter, select a restore point from before the failure, and follow the wizard. Review affected programs before confirming.
Microsoft also documents the Windows Recovery Environment route in its System Restore guidance.
If System Restore is unavailable or does not help, use Windows repair or reinstall options that preserve personal files where appropriate. Back up important data first. If the computer has wider servicing failures, repeated corruption, or malware concerns, a Microsoft-supported repair installation may be more reliable than attempting to replace individual files.

FAQ
Is snmpsmir.dll a Microsoft file?
Yes. Its description is WMI SNMP MIB Repository, and it belongs to the Microsoft Windows operating system’s WMI SNMP infrastructure.
Does every Windows PC need it?
No. SNMP and WMI SNMP Provider are optional features. Most everyday Windows applications do not need them.
Is snmpsmir.dll malware?
The genuine component is Microsoft software, but a file with that name is not automatically authentic. Verify its Microsoft digital signature and location.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Generally no. Those packages are not the normal remedy for a missing WMI SNMP repository file.
Should I put the file in System32 or SysWOW64?
No. Do not manually copy it into either folder. Restore the correct architecture through Windows Optional Features and servicing.
Why does a 32-bit program report this error on 64-bit Windows?
The program may depend on the Windows SNMP/WMI components, but that does not tell you to install or copy a 32-bit DLL. Windows should supply the correct files through its component servicing system.
What if SNMP installs but the error remains?
Restart, confirm both capabilities report Installed, run DISM followed by SFC, check Windows Security Protection History, and repair or reinstall the program that triggered the message.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When should I ask for more help?
Record the complete dialog text, the program name, Windows edition and build, the capability states, and the results of DISM and SFC. That information distinguishes a missing feature from component corruption, quarantine, and an application-specific compatibility problem.
