One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchsnwvalid.dll is a 32-bit application DLL described internally as WON DLL. It belongs to the historical World Opponent Network software associated with Cendant Software, and was used by some older Sierra games and their Internet Gaming System components.
It is not a Windows component, Microsoft runtime, or normal System32 file. The safest fix is to identify the old game or Sierra component requesting it, then repair or reinstall that program from its original disc, publisher-supported installer, or reputable store distribution.
Do not download a random copy of snwvalid.dll and place it in a Windows folder. A replacement can be the wrong version, the wrong architecture, modified, infected, or useless because another dependency is missing.
File identification
| Property | What is known |
|---|---|
| File | snwvalid.dll |
| Description | WON DLL |
| Associated software | World Opponent Network |

Third-party file catalogs have reported a version of 4.0.2.4 and a size of 231,936 bytes, approximately 226.5 KiB. Treat those details as identification clues, not as a universal replacement specification. The correct file is the copy supplied with the particular game or Sierra installation that requested it.

The error usually identifies an old game
One documented report showed this message:
“SNWVALID.dll not found in windows system folder please check your installation before continuing”
That report involved Lords of the Realm II Royal Edition, the Sierra Internet Gaming System, Windows 7, and Windows Vista. Other old Sierra or WON-based games may produce different Windows loader messages, including “snwvalid.dll is missing,” “was not found,” or “the specified module could not be found.”
Those messages do not prove that Windows itself owns the file. They mean that an application attempted to load it and Windows could not complete the load.
If the message does not name the game, identify the parent program before replacing anything:
- Note the program name in the error dialog or title bar.
- Right-click the shortcut and select Properties.
- Check Target on the Shortcut tab.
- Open the target folder and look for the game executable, Sierra folders,
SierraNW.dll, orSIERRA.INI. - If the message appears during startup, check which recently installed or obsolete program launches at the same time.
- In Event Viewer, open Windows Logs and Application, then inspect errors recorded at the same time.
If the calling program is unknown, do not copy a DLL into System32 merely because the message mentions a Windows system folder.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the original game
This is the most likely and most reliable solution.
If the game came from a launcher
- Open the launcher that installed the game.
- Open your library.
- Select the affected game.
- Open its settings, usually through a gear icon or three-dot menu.
- Choose Verify, Verify integrity, Repair, or similarly named file-checking option.
- Allow the process to finish.
- Restart Windows.
- Start the game from the launcher or its normal shortcut.
A successful repair restores the missing application files to the location expected by that game. Test both the game’s normal startup and the specific feature that originally produced the error.
If verification reports that files are missing but does not restore them, uninstall the game from the launcher, restart Windows, and install it again from the same trusted library. Back up saved games first if they are stored inside the installation folder.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf the game came from an original disc
- Insert the original game disc.
- Open File Explorer and select the disc drive.
- Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator.
- Choose Repair if the installer provides that option.
- Otherwise, uninstall the existing installation through Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original installer again as administrator.
- Start the game from its newly created shortcut.
If the disc installer does not run on Windows 10 or Windows 11, right-click the installer, select Properties, open Compatibility, select Run this program in compatibility mode, choose an appropriate older Windows version, and apply the change. Compatibility mode can help the installer start, but it does not recreate discontinued online services.
If you have an archived installer
Use it only when you know where it came from and can scan it before running it. The safest sources are your original media, a publisher-supported installer, or a reputable store account that supplied the game.
Do not use a standalone DLL archive as a substitute for the game installer. The parent application may also require configuration files, companion DLLs, registry settings, installation folders, or an older network component.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Security software may have removed or quarantined an old DLL because legacy files can have poor reputation or unusual behavior. Do not immediately disable antivirus protection.

- Select Protection history.
- Review entries from the time the file disappeared.
- Open a detection to inspect its name, path, and action.
- Restore the file only if the path points to your original, trusted game installation and you have verified the installer.
- If Windows Security offers Allow on device, use it only after checking the file’s source.
- Scan the original installer and the restored file before launching the game.
Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined file can cause it to be detected again. If the file is repeatedly removed, keep protection enabled, obtain a clean copy from the original game installer, and submit a suspected false positive through the security product’s normal process.
If the detection points to a temporary folder, an unknown download, or a location unrelated to the game, do not restore it. Delete the untrusted copy and reinstall from known-good media instead.
Fix 3: Confirm the 32-bit application layout
snwvalid.dll is reported as a 32-bit DLL. That matters when an old 32-bit game runs on 64-bit Windows.
A 32-bit program does not automatically use the same DLL locations as a 64-bit program. On 64-bit Windows, System32 is primarily the 64-bit system directory, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit Windows compatibility components. The names are confusing, and neither folder should be treated as a general DLL drop location.
The correct location depends on the game’s installer and loader. It may be the game’s own folder, a historical Sierra directory, or another location selected by the original setup program.
Check the application first:
- Right-click the game shortcut and select Open file location.
- Look for
snwvalid.dllbeside the game executable. - If the file is missing, run the game’s repair or reinstall process.
- If a verified copy exists in your own original installer, extract it only to the application folder the installer expects.
- Do not overwrite a system DLL or copy the file to both
System32andSysWOW64.
If the game is 32-bit, installing a 64-bit replacement cannot solve the problem. Conversely, a correctly built 32-bit DLL can still fail if it depends on another missing library.
Fix 4: Understand “the specified module could not be found”
A message saying that the specified module could not be found does not always mean that snwvalid.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the file but failed to load one of its dependencies.
This commonly happens when:
- The DLL is in the wrong folder.
- The game is loading a copy intended for a different architecture.
- A companion Sierra or WON file is missing.
- The installation is incomplete.
- A required legacy runtime is damaged.
- The DLL was copied without the configuration files that belong with it.
The practical fix remains the same: repair or reinstall the parent game so all related files arrive together. Do not install modern Visual C++ or DirectX packages automatically just because a DLL error appeared. Install a runtime only when the game separately identifies that runtime as missing or its original documentation requires it.

Some very old installers and games expect to write to protected folders or legacy configuration locations.
- Right-click the game shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program as an administrator.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Start the game again.
If this changes nothing, do not leave administrator mode enabled indefinitely without a reason. The more important step is still repairing the original installation.
You can also test compatibility mode from the same tab. Change one setting at a time so you know which change affected the result.
Fix 6: Check Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
System File Checker and DISM repair protected Windows components. They normally do not restore a third-party WON DLL, so they are secondary steps rather than the primary solution.

- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test the game.
If DISM reports that it cannot complete, restart Windows and run the command again from an elevated Command Prompt. If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart before testing. If both commands complete without finding problems, return to repairing the game rather than repeating them.
Repeatedly hunting through Windows components manually is time-consuming and does not establish which file caused the failure. Outbyte PC Repair can perform a free scan to show what it finds; repair features are handled by the full version, but reinstalling the specific game remains the definitive fix for this application DLL.
Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent change
If snwvalid.dll disappeared immediately after a cleanup utility, software installation, update, or security change, System Restore may reverse that change.

- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the programs and drivers that will be affected.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not normally restore personal documents, but it can remove applications and drivers installed after the selected point. If no suitable restore point exists, cancel the process and reinstall the original game instead.
Fix 8: Check drivers only if the game has a separate graphics or device error
A display-driver update does not normally supply snwvalid.dll. Do not use Device Manager as the first response to this file error.
Use Device Manager only when the game also reports a graphics, sound, controller, or hardware problem:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters or Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For a manufacturer-specific driver, download it from the PC or device manufacturer’s official support page. Avoid driver packages that do not clearly identify the hardware model.
Finding an old or mismatched driver manually can mean checking several hardware IDs and repeating the process after each restart. Outbyte Driver Updater offers a free scan showing which drivers it identifies; driver installation is handled by the full version, and it is not a replacement for reinstalling the game that owns snwvalid.dll.
What not to do
Do not copy an arbitrary DLL into System32
This can leave the game still broken while affecting unrelated programs. It can also create architecture conflicts or make later troubleshooting harder.
Do not run regsvr32 blindly
regsvr32 registers DLLs that provide the COM entry point DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose repair command.
The reported export for snwvalid.dll is SNWValidate, and there is no reliable confirmation that this file is a COM server. Therefore, this is not an appropriate routine fix:
regsvr32 snwvalid.dll
Running it may produce an error such as an entry-point failure, but that does not diagnose the original game installation.
Do not use registry cleaners
Registry cleaners cannot recreate the original WON files, configuration, or game directory. They can remove unrelated settings and make an old game harder to repair.

Do not install random Visual C++ or DirectX packages
Those packages address separate runtime dependencies. Install them only when the game or installer specifically identifies one as required.
Do not disable security protection to force startup
If antivirus protection repeatedly blocks the file, verify the original installer and investigate the detection. Do not accept a replacement solely because a download page claims that it is clean.

If the game loads but multiplayer still fails
Restoring snwvalid.dll can solve a startup or loading failure without restoring online play. The original World Opponent Network service is obsolete, so a repaired installation does not bring discontinued servers back.
If the game now starts but cannot connect:
- Confirm that the game reaches its main menu without the DLL error.
- Check whether the multiplayer feature reports a server or login error.
- Test the game’s single-player mode.
- Review firewall prompts for the game executable.
- Check whether the game’s online service is still supported.
- Look for compatibility guidance from the game’s current distributor.
Do not treat a multiplayer connection failure as proof that snwvalid.dll is still missing. At that point, the remaining issue may be the obsolete service, networking, firewall behavior, or game compatibility.
Frequently asked questions
Is snwvalid.dll part of Windows?
No. It is a third-party 32-bit application DLL associated with World Opponent Network and historical Sierra software.
Should I put it in System32 or SysWOW64?
Not by default. Use the original installer and let the parent application place the file. A 32-bit file does not belong in a folder simply because an error mentions a Windows system folder.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIs snwvalid.dll safe?
Its name alone does not prove that a particular downloaded copy is safe. Use the file supplied by the original, trusted game installer and scan that installer and file with current security software.
Does regsvr32 fix it?
Usually not. regsvr32 is for DLLs that support COM self-registration, and there is no reliable confirmation that snwvalid.dll does.
What if the file exists but the game still says it is missing?
The file may be in the wrong directory, built for the wrong architecture, or dependent on another missing module. Repair the game installation instead of copying more files.
Should I run SFC and DISM?
Only when Windows itself shows broader corruption. These commands normally will not restore this third-party game DLL.
Recommended Free Tools
What if I no longer have the game installer?
Do not obtain the DLL by itself from an unknown download site. Locate the original media, a legitimate store installation, or a verified backup. If the obsolete game cannot be restored safely, removing the broken component may be safer than adding an unverified binary.
Will restoring the DLL bring back WON multiplayer?
No. It may allow the game to load, but it cannot restore a discontinued World Opponent Network service.
