Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutebuttonres_en.dll is a Mathcad application file, not a standard Windows component. If Windows says buttonres_en.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair the affected Mathcad installation before trying system-wide DLL fixes.
The safest path is to identify which Mathcad release is failing, repair it from Programs and Features, and reinstall it from the original media or an authorized PTC distribution if repair is unavailable.
Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing files, record:
- Which program launches when the error appears: Mathcad, a worksheet shortcut, a document association, or another application.
- When the problem began: after uninstalling or upgrading Mathcad, after antivirus activity, after a Windows update, or without an obvious change.
- The exact error text: “missing” and “not found” are different from “not designed to run on Windows.”
- The Mathcad release: check the shortcut, installation folder, installer media, or the program’s About screen if it opens.
- The installation location: legacy 32-bit Mathcad installations commonly use a path under
C:Program Files (x86). - Whether only one worksheet or control fails: that points to a Mathcad component or dependency rather than a completely missing installation.
Do not download a standalone copy of buttonres_en.dll from a random DLL website. An isolated file may be malicious, belong to a different Mathcad release, use the wrong architecture, or leave the actual dependency problem unresolved.
What buttonres_en.dll is
buttonres_en.dll is identified as ButtonRes, an English resource DLL for Mathcad’s Button ActiveX Control. The related control is buttonr.ocx. In Mathcad 14-era file inventories, the DLL appears in the Mathcad program directory, for example:

C:Program Files (x86)MathcadMathcad 14buttonres_en.dll
The _en suffix normally indicates English-language resources. It does not mean that the file is an English version of Windows itself.
This file is associated with legacy Mathcad rather than with Windows, DirectX, .NET, or the Visual C++ Redistributable. It should normally remain beside the Mathcad files that use it. Copying it to C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 is not the correct repair.
Public file indexes report a 32-bit Win32 file with version 11.0.3.0, a size of approximately 16 KB, and a 2002 copyright attribution to Mathsoft Engineering and Education, Inc. Treat those details as reported metadata, not as a universal specification for every Mathcad installer.
The available evidence confirms the file in Mathcad 14-era installations, but it does not prove that every Mathcad release contains the same build or file. Use the exact release that originally installed it.
Fix 1: Repair Mathcad from Programs and Features
This is the fastest and most likely fix because the installer can restore the DLL and any related components together.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
text
appwiz.cpl
- Press Enter.
- Find the installed Mathcad entry.
- Select it and choose Change.
- If the setup program offers Repair, select it.
- Follow the prompts and allow the repair to finish.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Launch Mathcad from its normal shortcut rather than opening the worksheet first.
If the repair succeeds, the missing-file message should stop appearing. Test both Mathcad itself and the worksheet or control that originally produced the error.
For older Mathcad installations, repair may be especially important after installing or removing multiple releases in the wrong order. Side-by-side legacy installations can leave shared components or registration information inconsistent. Repair the release that owns the failing shortcut first.
If Change or Repair is not available, continue to the reinstall procedure below. Do not attempt to reconstruct the installation by copying one DLL.
Fix 2: Reinstall the exact Mathcad release
Use the original installation disc, an organization’s authorized deployment image, or an authorized PTC download associated with your product entitlement. Older Mathcad downloads may require an entitled PTC account or may no longer be available outside original media.
Before reinstalling:
- Back up important worksheets and custom templates.
- Close Mathcad and any installer windows.
- Open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select the affected Mathcad release.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
- Run the installer for the same release and language.
- If the installer is supplied as an archive, extract the complete archive to a local folder.
- Run
setup.exefrom that extracted folder. - Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator if normal installation fails.
- Restart Windows after installation.
- Test Mathcad before restoring custom shortcuts or file associations.
Do not install a different Mathcad generation merely because its installer is easier to find. A file from another release may have a different dependency set or architecture.

If several Mathcad versions are installed, avoid removing them randomly. Repair or reinstall the release that launches the failing worksheet, then test the remaining releases separately.
Fix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Security software can remove or quarantine an application file. This is more likely if the error began immediately after a scan or if the file keeps disappearing after repair.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →In Windows Security:
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent events.
- Look for an event naming
buttonres_en.dll, the Mathcad installation directory, or the Mathcad installer. - Expand the event and record the detected path and action.
Do not automatically restore the file. First confirm that the installer or installation media came from a legitimate Mathcad source. Scan the installer and extracted files, and check that the path belongs to Mathcad rather than to an unexpected temporary folder.
If a clean, legitimate installer repeatedly triggers the same detection:
- Remove the damaged Mathcad installation.
- Obtain the installer again from an authorized source.
- Scan the new installer.
- Contact the antivirus vendor about a suspected false positive.
- Reinstall Mathcad after the installer’s provenance is clear.
Microsoft documents that quarantined files can be restored, but restoration is appropriate only when you are confident the file is safe. Repeatedly restoring a file that security software immediately removes is not a repair strategy.
Fix 4: Check the Mathcad prerequisites
A loader message naming buttonres_en.dll does not always mean that this particular file is absent. Windows may find the named DLL and then fail because a dependency required by it is missing.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For Mathcad 15, the documented prerequisites include:
- .NET Framework 3.5 SP1
- MSXML 6.0
These prerequisites do not prove that either runtime supplies buttonres_en.dll. They are separate components that Mathcad may need.
Enable .NET Framework 3.5
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
text
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Expand .NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0).
- Select the feature and its child options if Windows presents them.
- Select OK.
- Allow Windows to download or enable the feature.
- Restart Windows.
- Test Mathcad again.
If Windows cannot obtain the required files, use installation media that matches your Windows version or follow Microsoft’s supported repair guidance. Do not download an unrelated framework installer from an unofficial site.
Check MSXML
MSXML is not enabled through the same Windows Features entry in every Windows release. If the Mathcad installer includes MSXML 6.0, run that component from the original Mathcad media. Otherwise, obtain the required Microsoft component through Microsoft’s official download and support channels.

If reinstalling the prerequisites does not change the error, return to repairing or reinstalling Mathcad. Do not keep installing unrelated runtime packages based only on the filename.
Do not assume Visual C++ is the answer
Installing the newest Visual C++ Redistributable is not a universal fix. Applications built with different Visual C++ toolsets can require specific redistributables, and the application vendor determines which runtime a particular Mathcad build needs.
If the Mathcad installer includes a runtime or prerequisite package, use that package. If it does not, a missing Visual C++ runtime should be confirmed from the full loader error, installer log, or application support information before installing one.
Fix 5: Confirm the architecture and file location
Legacy Mathcad can be a 32-bit application even when installed on 64-bit Windows. Mathcad 15 runs in 32-bit mode on 64-bit Windows, so a 64-bit operating system does not mean that buttonres_en.dll should be replaced with a 64-bit copy.
Check the location:
- Right-click the Mathcad shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Note the path in Target.
- Select Open File Location if available.
- Look for
buttonres_en.dllin the Mathcad program folder.
A typical legacy location is under:
C:Program Files (x86)
That is a normal location for a 32-bit application. It does not mean the DLL belongs in SysWOW64. Windows uses separate directories for different system components, and manually placing an application DLL there can create conflicts.
Windows normally searches an unpackaged application’s own directory before the Windows system directory. That is why the correct repair is usually to restore the file beside the Mathcad executable rather than to copy it into a global folder.
If the file exists in the Mathcad folder but the error remains, the problem may be:
- A missing dependency
- A corrupt or mismatched DLL
- A damaged Mathcad installation
- A permission or security-software issue
- A different Mathcad executable launching than the one you inspected
If the message says the file is “not designed to run on Windows” or reports an architecture error, treat the file as corrupt or mismatched. Reinstall the complete Mathcad release instead of replacing only the DLL.
Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 on this resource DLL
regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. It is used for DLLs or ActiveX controls that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer.
buttonres_en.dll is described as an English resource DLL, not as the Button ActiveX control itself. There is no verified evidence that this file exports DllRegisterServer.

Do not run:
regsvr32 buttonres_en.dll
It is likely to produce an error such as “DllRegisterServer entry point was not found,” and it will not restore a missing dependency.
The related buttonr.ocx is a different file. If an error specifically names that control, use the Mathcad installer’s repair process and instructions for that release. Do not guess at 32-bit or 64-bit regsvr32 commands.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFix 7: Use Windows repair commands only for broader corruption
SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They do not normally restore an application-owned Mathcad DLL. Use them when other Windows features and unrelated applications are also failing, or when you have evidence of broader system corruption.
First install pending Windows updates:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
Then open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
- Run:
cmd
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
cmd
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test Mathcad again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If both commands report that Windows is healthy but Mathcad still cannot load, return to Mathcad repair rather than repeating the commands.
When manually hunting through Windows components and repeating SFC or DISM does not show which issue remains, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it finds; its repair action requires the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling Mathcad remains the definitive fix for a Mathcad-owned DLL.
Fix 8: Check drivers only when the symptom points there
A graphics or device-driver update is not a normal fix for a missing Mathcad resource DLL. Consider drivers only if Mathcad also crashes during rendering, a worksheet fails when displaying a particular control, or other graphics-related programs are failing.
For a specific device:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters.
- Right-click the device.
- Choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Check the driver provider and date.
- Use Update Driver or obtain the driver from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows.
- Test Mathcad.
Do not replace a Mathcad DLL with a driver DLL, and do not update unrelated devices simply because the error names buttonres_en.dll.
If you are manually checking many devices and are unsure which driver is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; the driver installation feature requires the full version. It is not required for this Mathcad repair, and a Mathcad reinstall remains the authoritative fix when only this application file is missing.

If the error began immediately after installing or removing a program, driver, or Windows component, System Restore may return system settings and installed programs to an earlier state without removing personal files.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
text
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
Use this only when a suitable restore point exists and the timing is clear. If Mathcad is simply damaged or absent, repairing or reinstalling Mathcad is more direct.

If Mathcad opens but one worksheet fails
A successful Mathcad launch does not prove that every optional control is intact. If only one worksheet fails:
- Open a blank worksheet.
- Confirm that Mathcad itself works.
- Open another known-good worksheet.
- Identify whether the failing worksheet uses a Button ActiveX Control.
- Check whether the error names
buttonr.ocxor another file instead. - Run Mathcad repair.
- Test the worksheet from a clean copy if available.
- Check permissions on the worksheet and Mathcad folders.
If only one Windows user account sees the problem, test a new local profile. A per-user security rule, redirected folder, or damaged profile can affect one account without indicating a missing system DLL.

Frequently asked questions
Is buttonres_en.dll part of Windows?
No evidence indicates that it is a Windows component. It is associated with legacy Mathcad and should normally be restored through Mathcad’s installer.
Which Mathcad versions contain it?
Public evidence places it in Mathcad 14-era installations. The same file should not be assumed to exist in every Mathcad release. Check the exact installer and program folder for your version.
Is it 32-bit or 64-bit?
Reported file metadata identifies a 32-bit Win32 file, and Mathcad 15 runs in 32-bit mode even on 64-bit Windows. Do not substitute a 64-bit DLL because Windows itself is 64-bit.
Does _en mean I need to change the language?
No. It identifies English resource content. If the installation language or release is different, restore the file from that exact Mathcad installation rather than renaming another file.
Should I install Visual C++, .NET, or MSXML?
Only install prerequisites required by your Mathcad release or identified by the installer. Mathcad 15 documentation lists .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and MSXML 6.0. Neither is proof that it supplies buttonres_en.dll.
Should I copy the DLL into System32?
No. It belongs in the Mathcad application directory. Copying it to a global Windows folder can create version conflicts and may not satisfy Mathcad’s dependency search.
Why does “the specified module could not be found” mention this file when it exists?
The named DLL may be present while one of its dependencies is missing or incompatible. Repair the complete Mathcad installation and check its prerequisites.
When should I use SFC or DISM?
Use them when other Windows components or applications also fail. They are secondary for an application-owned Mathcad DLL.
What if reinstalling Mathcad does not help?
Confirm which executable is launching, inspect the full error text, check antivirus history, verify the installation folder, and look for other missing dependencies. If several Mathcad releases are installed, repair them carefully rather than mixing files between folders. If the issue remains, provide PTC support with the Mathcad release, executable path, complete error text, and installer logs.
