To fix high ping in VALORANT, first determine whether the delay comes from the selected server, your Wi-Fi, competing household traffic, packet loss, jitter, or your internet provider’s route. In VALORANT, enable the network graphs, compare the available servers, test the same match conditions over Ethernet, stop other traffic, and restart the modem and router for at least 30 seconds. Only after those controlled tests should you change buffering, reset Windows networking, alter DNS, or contact your ISP and Riot Support.

What high ping means in VALORANT

Ping is the round-trip time for data to travel from your PC to a VALORANT server and back. A higher value means your inputs and the server’s responses take longer to complete the trip. Riot describes high latency as a connection between the computer and game server that is delayed or unstable. Ping is displayed in milliseconds (ms), so a smaller number is generally preferable.

Ping is not the only network measurement that affects how the game feels:

  • Packet loss means packets fail to reach the server or fail to return to your PC. Lost updates can produce rubber-banding, missing hit registration, or brief freezes.
  • Jitter is variation in packet arrival time. A connection that alternates between short and long delays can feel worse than a steady connection with a slightly higher average ping.
  • Client FPS is the frame rate rendered by your PC. Low client FPS is a graphics or performance problem, not a ping problem.
  • Server FPS reflects the server simulation. Low server FPS is different from a slow connection and requires a different diagnosis.

Riot’s network-instability guidance says high-quality wireless and most wired connections should have near-zero packet loss at all times. Therefore, an apparently acceptable average ping does not clear the connection if the packet-loss or jitter graphs show repeated spikes.

Riot has described a long-term goal of delivering 35 ms ping to 70% of its player base. That is a broad service target, not a guarantee for every location, ISP, or match. The game uses 128 server ticks per second; this does not eliminate delay caused by distance, interference, congestion, or routing.

Use VALORANT’s graphs before changing anything

Begin with evidence from the game rather than guessing from how a round felt.

  1. Open Settings in VALORANT.
  2. Open the Video section and then the Stats area.
  3. Turn on the network statistics and graphs for average ping, incoming packet loss, outgoing packet loss, and the network-problem indicator. Also enable client-FPS and server-FPS statistics.
  4. Play or observe the game long enough to capture a normal period and the moment a spike occurs. Note the time, selected server, displayed ping, packet-loss percentage, and whether FPS changed at the same time.

An average-ping increase with clean FPS points toward the network path. A network-problem indicator that appears during sustained loss or brief disconnects points toward connection instability. If only client FPS falls, work on PC performance instead of changing servers. If server FPS falls while your network graphs remain clean, the server simulation is the more relevant signal.

Choose the best available VALORANT server

Server Select is available when you play solo or when you are the party leader. It lets you choose among servers offered in your region, but it does not change your account’s shard. The automatic choice is not always the most stable route at a particular moment.

  1. From the play screen, open the server-selection control before queueing.
  2. Record the displayed ping for each available server.
  3. Prefer the server with the lowest stable ping and no packet-loss or jitter spikes. A server that is 5 ms lower but fluctuates heavily can feel worse than a slightly higher, steady option.
  4. Play a comparable test and watch the graphs rather than judging from the lobby number alone.

Server selection can reduce the distance or improve the route to Riot’s infrastructure, but it cannot change the physical location of your home, repair a damaged line, or bypass an ISP route that is unstable across multiple servers. If every available server behaves badly, continue with local and route tests.

Compare Wi-Fi with a direct Ethernet connection

Riot’s PC connection guidance recommends switching to a wired connection because wireless links are affected by distance, interference, walls, and other devices using the same radio channel. Connect the computer directly to the router or modem with an Ethernet cable and repeat the same in-game test.

Run a controlled wired test

  1. Use a functioning Ethernet cable, preferably Cat6 for a current home connection.
  2. Connect one end to the PC and the other to a LAN port on the router or modem. Avoid testing through a wireless extender or power-line adapter if you are trying to isolate Wi-Fi.
  3. Disable Wi-Fi on the PC temporarily so Windows cannot silently switch paths.
  4. Use the same VALORANT server, game mode, and approximate time of day as the wireless test.
  5. Compare average ping, packet loss, jitter, and the frequency of network-problem indicators.

Ethernet is a diagnostic and stability aid, not a guaranteed ping reduction. If wired play is clean while Wi-Fi shows spikes, improve wireless placement or continue using the cable. If both connections show the same loss and route instability, the problem is more likely beyond the local radio link.

Stop competing traffic and restart the network

Before changing Windows settings, remove the simplest sources of congestion. Riot specifically identifies downloads, streaming, cloud synchronization, torrents, and other devices as possible competitors for bandwidth.

  • Pause game updates, file downloads, video streams, cloud-drive synchronization, and torrent clients.
  • Ask other users to stop high-bandwidth activity for the test.
  • Temporarily disconnect devices that are consuming the connection heavily, such as televisions, consoles, cameras, or backup systems.
  • Close launchers and applications that may begin downloads in the background.

Then perform a full power cycle:

  1. Shut down VALORANT and the Riot Client.
  2. Turn off the modem and router. If they are separate units, power off both.
  3. Leave them off for at least 30 seconds.
  4. Restore the modem first, wait for its connection lights to settle, then restore the router.
  5. Reconnect the PC and repeat the controlled server and packet-loss test.

This clears temporary equipment states; it does not repair a physical line or permanently change ISP routing. If spikes return only when other devices become active, investigate congestion or router quality rather than the VALORANT installation.

Check packet loss and jitter, not just the ping number

Use the incoming and outgoing packet-loss graphs to identify direction and timing. Incoming loss can affect updates arriving from the server; outgoing loss can prevent your inputs from reaching it. Either can cause rubber-banding or apparent delayed actions.

Interpret common patterns

Observed pattern What it suggests Next test
Ping rises steadily while packet loss remains at zero Distance, congestion, or a route with longer round-trip delay Compare another available server and run the wired test
Short loss bursts and a network-problem indicator Unstable Wi-Fi, local congestion, line noise, or upstream routing Stop competing traffic, power-cycle equipment, then compare Ethernet
Ping appears normal but movement snaps or rewinds Jitter or packet loss that the average ping hides Watch both packet-loss graphs and record timestamps
Network graphs are clean while client FPS drops Local rendering or PC-load problem rather than network delay Investigate graphics settings, drivers, and background CPU/GPU load
Network graphs are clean while server FPS drops Server-simulation issue rather than your connection Compare another match or server and retain the timestamp

Keep a short log containing the date, local time, selected server, wired or wireless status, average ping, loss direction, and the exact time of a spike. That record is more useful to an ISP or support team than “the game lagged.”

Adjust VALORANT network buffering carefully

VALORANT’s network-buffering setting can make an unstable connection appear smoother by buffering packets that arrive unevenly. Riot explains that buffering adds a small processing delay; without enough buffering, high jitter can force larger and repeatedly changing delays as the game compensates for irregular packet arrival.

  1. Open Settings and locate the network-buffering option in the game’s general or network controls.
  2. Change one level at a time rather than altering several settings together.
  3. Play a consistent test and compare movement smoothness, rubber-banding, and perceived input delay.
  4. Keep the setting that gives the best balance for your connection. The lowest buffering value is not automatically best when packet arrival is uneven.

Buffering cannot lower the physical round-trip time to a distant server. It trades a small amount of responsiveness for fewer visible timing corrections, so judge it by both stability and input feel.

Apply second-line Windows connection fixes

Use these steps only after the server, Ethernet, congestion, and power-cycle tests. Change one item at a time and retest so you know which change mattered.

Reset the Windows TCP/IP stack

Open Terminal or Command Prompt as an administrator and run the standard Windows network-reset commands, then restart the PC:

netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset
ipconfig /flushdns

These commands rebuild common socket and TCP/IP settings and clear the local DNS cache. They do not fix a damaged cable, wireless interference, or an ISP route. If you use a manually configured corporate network, VPN, or proxy, record its settings before resetting.

Test an alternative DNS service

DNS resolves a service name to an address; it normally affects lookup time rather than the ongoing round-trip latency of a VALORANT match. If name resolution is slow or fails, temporarily test a reputable public DNS service through Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi or Ethernet > Hardware properties > DNS server assignment. Record the original automatic setting so you can restore it. Do not expect DNS alone to cure packet loss or a long physical route.

Disable VPNs and proxies during diagnosis

Disconnect VPN software and remove any proxy configured in Settings > Network & internet > Proxy while testing. These services can send traffic through a longer or unstable route. Re-enable a required work or privacy service after the test; the purpose is to isolate its effect, not to declare every VPN unsuitable.

Perform a clean boot

A clean boot starts Windows with nonessential startup programs and services disabled. Use System Configuration (msconfig) to hide Microsoft services, disable the remaining third-party services, and disable startup applications in Task Manager. Restart and test VALORANT. If the connection improves, re-enable items in groups until the conflicting updater, overlay, traffic monitor, or background utility is identified. Restore normal startup behavior after testing.

Check firewall configuration

Confirm that VALORANT and the Riot Client are allowed through Windows Defender Firewall on the network profile you actually use. Do not turn the firewall off permanently. If a security product has its own firewall, test its documented game-network exception procedure, then restore protection and keep only the necessary exceptions.

Use route diagnostics when the problem persists

A route test can show whether delay or loss begins inside your home network, at the ISP edge, or farther upstream. Open an elevated Command Prompt and run:

tracert <server-or-address>

Use an address supplied by Riot Support or shown in reliable connection documentation rather than guessing a server address. Save the complete output with the date and time. A single intermediate hop that does not answer can be configured to ignore diagnostic packets; it is not proof of failure when later hops respond normally. Consistent delay or loss that continues through later hops is more significant.

Run the trace while connected by Ethernet with competing traffic stopped. Then compare it with a wireless or congested test if needed. This controlled comparison helps separate local interference from an upstream route issue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to contact your ISP or Riot Support

Contact the ISP when the wired path is still unstable

Contact your internet provider if direct Ethernet testing, a power cycle, and stopped household traffic still produce packet loss or large jitter. Provide the timestamp log, VALORANT graphs, traceroute output, modem status information, and whether every available server is affected. Ask the provider to check line quality, physical cable damage, signal levels, and routing to the affected destinations. Riot notes that physical ISP-cable damage or upstream routing can require provider investigation.

Submit a Riot Player Support ticket with logs

Escalate to Riot when the issue survives a clean local test or appears limited to particular VALORANT servers. Include your region and shard, selected server, wired or wireless status, the exact times of spikes, packet-loss graphs, traceroute results, and any Riot Client logs requested by the support form. State which steps you already completed so support can focus on the remaining part of the path.

A practical decision path

If you observe Prioritize
One available server has consistently lower, cleaner statistics Select that server when possible
Wi-Fi spikes but Ethernet is stable Use Ethernet or improve wireless placement and interference conditions
All servers spike while other devices are active Stop downloads and streaming, then investigate household congestion
All servers remain unstable over Ethernet Collect traces and contact the ISP; escalate to Riot with logs
Ping is steady but packet loss or jitter appears Use the packet-loss graphs to identify instability; do not judge by average ping alone
Network statistics are clean but FPS is low Treat it as a client or server-performance problem, not a network fix
