There is no single confirmed fix for Tomb Raider I–III Remastered Starring Lara Croft crashing on Windows. The right solution depends on whether the game fails before the menu, after a graphics-driver update, during an FMV, while loading one save, or during normal gameplay.
Work through the least destructive tests first: update the game, verify its files, disable injected software, test HDR and display modes, then isolate drivers, FMV playback, saves, and system stability.
Start here: identify the crash pattern

1. Update the game before changing files
Check your launcher for pending updates. Aspyr’s official support hub lists the original Updates 1–4, the Challenge Mode Update, Challenge Mode Patch 1, and Challenge Mode Patch 2. The relevant official dates include Update 4 on November 4, 2024, the Challenge Mode Update on March 12, 2026, Patch 1 on April 1, 2026, and Patch 2 on May 1, 2026.
Patch 2 includes PC fixes for New Game+ saves, Challenge Mode unlocks, outfit unlocks and resets, and camera clipping. Its notes do not claim a universal PC crash fix. Aspyr’s Patch 1 announcement also said crashes and save-game issues were still under review. Treat updates as essential, but do not assume that being patched rules out every crash.

2. Verify the installation
Steam
- Exit the game.
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click Tomb Raider I–III Remastered Starring Lara Croft.
- Choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the scan to finish, restart Steam, and test the game.
Steam’s labels can change between client versions, so use the equivalent installed-files verification command if the wording differs.
Epic Games Store and GOG
Use the launcher’s equivalent Verify, Repair, or Scan/Repair command. Do not mix executables, FMV folders, or replacement files from different distributions, and do not download game files from unofficial websites.
Verification can repair missing or modified files, but it cannot fix an overlay conflict, a graphics-driver regression, HDR interaction, CPU instruction-set limitation, unstable overclock, or damaged save.
3. Disable overlays, mods, and injected software
Temporarily disable the following and test the unmodified game:

- Mods, texture replacements, and unofficial launchers
Restart the game after disabling them. If the crash disappears, re-enable one item at a time until the conflicting component is identified. This is an isolation test, not proof that a particular overlay is always incompatible with the game.
4. Test HDR and display modes
A Steam community report describes disabling Windows HDR as a successful startup workaround, while other users in the same discussion reported different results. Test it temporarily rather than treating HDR as the universal cause.
- Close the game.
- Open Windows Settings > System > Display > HDR.
- Turn HDR off.
- Launch the game.
- If it starts, test borderless or windowed mode before re-enabling HDR.
Also test the following one at a time:
- Your native desktop resolution
- Windowed or borderless mode instead of exclusive fullscreen
- A lower resolution as a diagnostic test
- VSync on and off
- Modern and classic graphics modes
If changing resolution or HDR works, restore the original setting later to determine whether the problem is caused by a specific combination rather than by the setting alone.
5. For startup crashes on older CPUs, test the HD-FMV workaround
Some community reports associate startup black-screen crashes with HD video playback on older AMD FX, Phenom, and similar processors. The reported workaround is to make the game fall back to its original-quality videos. This is not an official Aspyr fix and is not a general solution for every crash.

- Close the game and its launcher.
- Use the launcher’s Browse local files or equivalent command to open the installation directory.
- Open the relevant game folder and locate its
FMVdirectory. - Back up the folder before changing anything.
- Rename the relevant
HDfolder to something such asHD_backup. - Launch the game and test the title and the FMV sequence that previously failed.
- To undo the change, restore the original folder name.
Installation paths differ between Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG, so do not assume one universal path. The workaround may reduce video quality or change which videos load. A later participant in the same discussion reported that it did not solve their black-screen crash, confirming that it is a targeted compatibility test, not a guaranteed fix. If the launcher flags the files or restores them, run file verification to return to the default installation.
6. Test graphics-driver problems
AMD: consider a rollback only when the timing matches
One Steam discussion participant reported that an AMD driver update stopped the game from launching and that returning to an older driver resolved the issue on an RX 6600. This is a single-user report, not proof of a universal AMD regression.
- Record your current AMD driver version.
- Confirm whether the crash began immediately after that driver was installed.
- Use AMD’s official software or rollback option for a clean installation or previous driver.
- Test the known-good driver.
- If it changes the result, report both driver versions and the reproduction details to Aspyr and AMD.
Use official manufacturer distribution channels. A rollback should be a diagnostic comparison, not an automatic permanent recommendation.
NVIDIA only: test the present method for severe system slowdown
A separate Steam report says that changing NVIDIA Control Panel’s Vulkan/OpenGL present method to Prefer layered on DXGI Swapchain resolved severe system-wide slowdown for one user. The evidence does not establish this as a general Tomb Raider crash fix, and the setting does not apply to AMD hardware.

- Open NVIDIA Control Panel.
- Go to Manage 3D settings.
- Locate Vulkan/OpenGL present method.
- Test Prefer layered on DXGI Swapchain.
- Restart the game.
- Restore the default if there is no improvement.
7. Determine whether a save is responsible
If the game crashes only when loading one save, isolate the save before deleting anything. Cloud synchronization can restore a damaged file after a reinstall, so reinstalling alone may not test this properly.
- Exit the game.
- Back up your local saves to a separate folder.
- Temporarily disable Steam Cloud or the equivalent launcher synchronization.
- Use the launcher’s local-files browsing function and locate the game’s save folder; store copies outside the installation directory.
- Start a new game and test the same general gameplay conditions.
- If a new game works but the original save crashes, treat the save or its checkpoint as suspect.
- Restore your backup before re-enabling cloud synchronization.
Do not delete the only copy of a save. A new game working does not prove that the entire installation is healthy, but it is useful evidence that the failure is tied to a save, checkpoint, or level state.

Leave broader system checks until the game-specific tests are complete, unless other games are also crashing. Then:
- Install pending Windows updates.
- Use the latest stable GPU driver, or compare with the previous driver if the issue follows an update.
- Remove CPU, GPU, and RAM overclocks or undervolts.
- Check temperatures and power behavior during the crash.
- Close unnecessary background applications.
- Ensure the game drive has sufficient free space.
- Run Windows’ built-in memory and system-file checks if other applications or games are unstable too.
Steam lists a 64-bit operating system, Windows 7 or later, DirectX 12, 4 GB of RAM, an Intel i3-3240 or AMD FX-4100, and a GeForce GT 730 or Radeon R7 240 among the minimum requirements. Meeting the listed minimum does not guarantee compatibility with every video-playback path, display configuration, or driver. It also does not mean that buying a new GPU is the correct first fix.

Why reinstalling often does not help
A reinstall may leave the real cause untouched: cloud-synchronized saves, user configuration, HDR, launcher settings, overlay software, or the GPU driver. If you reinstall, back up saves first, temporarily disable cloud synchronization, test with overlays and mods disabled, and compare a new game with the original save. Reinstalling should be an isolation step, not the default response to every crash.
When to contact Aspyr
Send an official support request if the game still crashes after a clean, verified installation; the failure is reproducible at the same location; multiple saves fail; current and known-good drivers produce the same result; the issue began after a specific patch; or the game crashes on hardware that meets or exceeds the listed requirements.
Use Aspyr’s Tomb Raider support hub. Include:
- Store version: Steam, Epic Games Store, or GOG
- Game version or build number
- Windows version
- CPU, GPU, and RAM
- GPU-driver version
- Whether HDR is enabled
- Whether overlays, mods, or monitoring tools are installed
- The game, level, checkpoint, or cutscene involved
- Whether a new game also crashes
- Exact steps that reproduce the problem
- Crash logs, error messages, or screenshots when available
Steam identifies Aspyr’s site as the official support channel and lists [email protected] for support contact. A precise reproduction report is more useful than simply reporting that the game “randomly crashes.”
Quick decision tree
- Before the main menu: update, verify, disable overlays and mods, test HDR off and borderless mode, then try the HD-FMV test if you use an older CPU.
- After a graphics-driver update: compare a clean current installation with the previous known-good driver.
- Only one save: back up saves, disable cloud sync temporarily, and test a new game.
- At one level or cutscene: test modern and classic graphics modes, then try the FMV test if video playback is involved.
- The whole PC slows or becomes unstable: disable overlays and monitoring tools, remove overclocks, and investigate the driver and other games.
- Nothing changes: submit a reproducible report to Aspyr with complete hardware, software, save, and driver information.
The Bottom Line
The most reliable approach is symptom-based: patch and verify first, isolate overlays and display settings, protect saves, and use the HD-FMV or driver workarounds only when their specific symptoms match. Patch 2 does not establish that every PC crash is fixed, so unresolved reproducible failures should go to Aspyr with detailed technical information.
