Somber Smithing Stone [7] upgrades a special armament from +6 to +7. It is a single upgrade material, not seven stones, and it cannot replace regular Smithing Stone [7]. For an unlimited supply, find Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing [4] in Crumbling Farum Azula, give it to the Twin Maiden Husks at Roundtable Hold, and buy Somber Smithing Stone [7] for 16,000 Runes each. If you only need one before reaching Farum Azula, the Volcano Manor pickup is one of the earliest practical intended options.
This guide covers the base game and Shadow of the Erdtree, not Elden Ring Nightreign. Its version-sensitive guidance is anchored to Elden Ring App Ver. 1.16.1 and Regulation Ver. 1.16.1, dated August 21, 2025, according to the official patch notes.

| Where is that Bell Bearing? | On a corpse just north of the Tempest-Facing Balcony Site of Grace in Crumbling Farum Azula. |

Somber Smithing Stone [7] is used on special armaments following the Somber upgrade path. These commonly include unique weapons, boss-reward weapons, and other special armaments. The category is broader than only legendary weapons: some unique staves and sacred seals also use Somber Smithing Stones.
Check the weapon’s upgrade screen rather than guessing from its name. If the required material is a Somber Smithing Stone, the weapon follows the special-armament path. Weapons upgraded with regular Smithing Stones follow the separate path to +25.
| Current level | Material | New level |
|---|---|---|
| +0 | Somber Smithing Stone [1] | +1 |
| +1 | Somber Smithing Stone [2] | +2 |
| +2 | Somber Smithing Stone [3] | +3 |
| +3 | Somber Smithing Stone [4] | +4 |
| +4 | Somber Smithing Stone [5] | +5 |
| +5 | Somber Smithing Stone [6] | +6 |
| +6 | Somber Smithing Stone [7] | +7 |
| +7 | Somber Smithing Stone [8] | +8 |
| +8 | Somber Smithing Stone [9] | +9 |
| +9 | Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone | +10 |
Special armaments reach a maximum of +10, and normally consume one Somber Smithing Stone per upgrade level. Somber Smithing Stone [7] cannot take a weapon directly from +0 to +7, skip the earlier upgrade steps, or replace the Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone needed for the final +10 upgrade. The full upgrade relationship is also summarized in the Smithing Stones reference.
Item details
- Purchase price: 16,000 Runes
- Sell value: 1,400 Runes
- Maximum held and stored: 999
Those item details are listed on the Somber Smithing Stone [7] database entry.
How to buy Somber Smithing Stone [7] infinitely
For multiple weapons, the Bell Bearing route is much better than collecting individual world pickups or relying on enemy drops. The required item is Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing [4]. It unlocks unlimited purchases of:
- Somber Smithing Stone [7]
- Somber Smithing Stone [8]
- Sanctuary Stone
Find Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing [4]
- Progress to Crumbling Farum Azula after the Forge of the Giants sequence and the burning of the Erdtree.
- Reach the Tempest-Facing Balcony Site of Grace.
- From the Site of Grace, travel north toward the cliff edge.
- Loot the corpse near the broken railing. It holds Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing [4].
The Bell Bearing is available before the Godskin Duo encounter. You do not need to defeat Godskin Duo first, and this corpse is separate from the fixed Somber Smithing Stone [7] pickups elsewhere in Farum Azula. The Farum Azula route reference provides the location details.
Offer the Bell Bearing to the Twin Maiden Husks
- Return to Roundtable Hold.
- Speak to the Twin Maiden Husks.
- Select Offer a bell bearing.
- Open their purchase inventory.
- Buy Somber Smithing Stone [7] for 16,000 Runes each.
The stock becomes unlimited after the correct Bell Bearing is offered. You can buy as many as you can afford, up to the game’s item-holding and storage limits. The Bell Bearing guide lists the unlocked shop items and price.
Do not confuse the two Bell Bearing [4] items
| Item | What it unlocks | Where to associate it |
|---|---|---|
| Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing [4] | Somber Smithing Stone [7] and [8] | Corpse near Tempest-Facing Balcony in Crumbling Farum Azula |
| Smithing-Stone Miner’s Bell Bearing [4] | Regular Smithing Stone [7] and [8] | Reward associated with the Godskin Duo |
Both names contain Bell Bearing [4], but they are different items. If the Twin Maiden Husks sell regular Smithing Stone [7] while Somber Smithing Stone [7] is missing, check the exact name of the Bell Bearing in your inventory. The distinction is also documented in this Bell Bearing reference.
Earliest practical single pickup: Volcano Manor
If you need one Somber Smithing Stone [7] before reaching Crumbling Farum Azula, Volcano Manor offers one of the earliest practical intended routes for ordinary progression. It is not useful to describe an old jump exploit as the normal method; the current intended route uses an Imp Statue seal and two Stonesword Keys.
- Reach Volcano Manor.
- Enter and progress through the legacy-dungeon section rather than relying only on the manor’s NPC quest route.
- Continue to the room containing the sending gate toward Rykard’s Audience Chamber.
- Turn back and find the doorway sealed by an Imp Statue.
- Use two Stonesword Keys to open the seal.
- Descend through the cage lifts and work across the dangerous area.
- Reach the ledge guarded by an Abductor Virgin and loot the Somber Smithing Stone [7].
This is a hazardous pickup and costs two Stonesword Keys, so it is most attractive when you need one stone immediately. If you plan to upgrade several special armaments, the Farum Azula Bell Bearing is the more dependable long-term target. The Volcano Manor location guide covers this intended route.

All fixed base-game Somber Smithing Stone [7] locations
The base game contains 24 fixed Somber Smithing Stone [7] loot entries in the location coverage below. This is a count of fixed pickups and guaranteed listed drops, not a count of random enemy drops or unlimited shop purchases. The locations are grouped by region in the complete location guide.
| Region | Fixed entries | Location details |
|---|---|---|
| Volcano Manor | 1 | Behind the two-Stonesword-Key Imp Statue seal; guarded by an Abductor Virgin. |
| Nokstella, Eternal City | 3 | One chest is reached through an open window; one is on a corpse overlooking the area where the Dragonkin Soldier of Nokstella appears; another is in a chest in a Silver Tear area guarded by Silver Tears and a ceiling Silver Sphere. |
| Uhl Palace Ruins North | 1 | Dropped by the malformed star or Astel-like enemy hanging from the ruins. |
| Lake of Rot | 2 | One is on a corpse on a small platform near the Lake of Rot Shoreside Site of Grace; the other is in eastern ruins near a basilisk. |
| Deeproot Depths | 5 | Found around a ruined building, a cave near a sleeping Lesser Runebear, a northwestern ledge, a ruined mausoleum, and a hidden ledge reached by careful drops. Some routes involve roots near Basilisks. |
| Subterranean Shunning-Grounds | 2 | One fixed pickup is in the pipe and giant-crawfish area; another is dropped by a scarab inside the pipes. The area also contains imps and difficult navigation. |
| Forbidden Lands | 1 | On a corpse inside a giant skull on a rocky outcropping south of the Black Blade Kindred area. |
| Zamor Ruins area | 1 | Dropped by a scarab hanging from the large thorn-like structure east of Zamor Ruins. |
| Mountaintops of the Giants | 1 | On a ledge near Giant’s Gravepost, guarded by hand enemies. |
| Castle Sol | 2 | Two lion enemies near the entrance each drop one. |
| Ordina, Liturgical Town area | 1 | Dropped by a scarab on a rock pillar east of Ordina. |
| Crumbling Farum Azula | 4 | One is near the Great Bridge, one is on floating debris northwest of Tempest-Facing Balcony, one is beneath the Great Bridge, and one is on a corpse reached through the Dragon Temple lift. |
Useful underground alternatives before Farum Azula
If you have reached Leyndell but have not yet entered the Mountaintops or Crumbling Farum Azula, the underground regions can provide several fixed opportunities. Nokstella, Lake of Rot, Deeproot Depths, and the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds collectively contain difficult but valuable routes. Expect Scarlet Rot in the Lake of Rot, Basilisks and root-platforming in parts of Deeproot Depths, and pipes, imps, giant crawfish, and restricted navigation in the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds.

Deeproot Depths has the largest concentration, but several of its five entries require careful drops, root traversal, or approaching a ruined mausoleum from the western side.
Shadow of the Erdtree locations
Shadow of the Erdtree adds four fixed Somber Smithing Stone [7] pickups. These are additional one-time pickups; the base-game Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing [4] remains the source of unlimited purchases.
| DLC area | Location |
|---|---|
| Rauh Base | Dropped by a scarab north of the Ancient Ruins Base Site of Grace. |
| Ruined Forge of Starfall Past | Inside the forge, along the tunnel route after the first gate. See the Ruined Forge location guide. |
| Scadu Altus / Recluses’ River | Near the flower enemies, reached by dropping down ledges north of Recluses’ River Downstream. |
| Abyssal Woods | At the base of a tree south of the untouchable enemies, between Abyssal Woods and Divided Falls. See the Abyssal Woods guide. |
That makes 28 fixed entries total across the base game and DLC: 24 in the base game and four in Shadow of the Erdtree. The total excludes random enemy drops and the unlimited Twin Maiden Husk inventory.
How to use Somber Smithing Stone [7]
- Confirm that the weapon is a special armament on the Somber upgrade path.
- Make sure it is currently at +6.
- Travel to Smithing Master Hewg at Roundtable Hold or War Counselor Iji in Liurnia.
- Select Strengthen Armament.
- Choose the weapon and confirm the upgrade that requires Somber Smithing Stone [7].
- Pay the displayed Rune service cost and consume one stone.
The smithing table at the Church of Elleh is only for early upgrades up to +3. Use Hewg or Iji for this +7 upgrade and later special-armament upgrades. If the upgrade is not available, the weapon is usually the wrong type, the weapon is at the wrong current level, the wrong tier of stone is in your inventory, or you lack the required Runes.
Which route should you choose?
| Your situation | Best choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You need one stone immediately | Volcano Manor | It is one of the earliest practical intended pickups, although it costs two Stonesword Keys and involves a dangerous Abductor Virgin. |
| You need several stones or want to upgrade multiple weapons | Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing [4] | It gives unlimited shop purchases for 16,000 Runes each and also unlocks Somber [8]. |
| You are already exploring underground regions | Collect fixed pickups in Nokstella, Lake of Rot, Deeproot Depths, or the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds | These can provide several stones before Farum Azula, but their routes are dangerous and sometimes awkward. |
| You are in the DLC | Collect the four DLC pickups when convenient, but still use the Bell Bearing for repeat purchases | The DLC adds fixed stones but does not replace the base-game unlimited-purchase route. |
| You want to farm enemies | Use enemy drops only as a backup | Enemy-drop farming is RNG-based and is less reliable than buying from the Twin Maiden Husks. |
Enemy drops and farming
Some late-game enemy types can drop Somber Smithing Stones, but this is random rather than a conventional guaranteed Somber Smithing Stone [7] farm. If you need a sustained supply, collecting Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing [4] and spending Runes is the consistent solution. The enemy-drop and farming reference is useful for players who still want to pursue RNG-based drops.
Troubleshooting
I gave Bell Bearing [4] to the Twin Maiden Husks, but Somber [7] is missing
Check the full item name. You may have offered Smithing-Stone Miner’s Bell Bearing [4], the regular-material bearing associated with Godskin Duo. That bearing unlocks regular Smithing Stone [7] and [8], not Somber Smithing Stone [7]. You need Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing [4] from the corpse near the Tempest-Facing Balcony Site of Grace in Crumbling Farum Azula.
The stone is in my inventory, but the weapon cannot be upgraded
- Verify that the weapon uses Somber Smithing Stones.
- Verify that its current level is +6. Somber [7] is for the +6 to +7 step.
- Make sure you have Somber Smithing Stone [7], not regular Smithing Stone [7].
- Check that you have enough Runes for the smith’s service fee.
- Confirm that the weapon is not already at its maximum level.
I found Somber [8] or [9] before Somber [7]
This can happen. Fixed pickups are not arranged so every player must discover each tier in strict ascending order. Finding a higher-tier stone does not unlock the lower tier and does not substitute for it. The Bell Bearing [4] shop is the simplest way to obtain the missing [7].
Can I use Somber Smithing Stone [7] on a normal weapon?
No. Normal armaments use regular Smithing Stones and can reach +25. Somber Smithing Stone [7] is for special armaments on the +10 path. If the upgrade menu asks for regular Smithing Stone [7], the Somber version will not work. The general distinction is explained in this weapon-upgrade guide.

Do not plan on multiplayer trading as your supply method. Community documentation reports that smithing stones cannot be dropped as ordinary multiplayer trade items. The reliable options are fixed pickups, eligible enemy drops, or the Twin Maiden Husk shop after you obtain the correct Bell Bearing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Somber Smithing Stone [7] the same as Somber Smithing Stone (7)?
Yes. Somber Smithing Stone [7] is the database-style name; Somber Smithing Stone (7) and Somber [7] are common alternate ways players write the same item.
Does Somber Smithing Stone [7] require seven stones?
No. The number identifies the material tier. A special armament normally uses one Somber Smithing Stone for each upgrade step, and Somber [7] is the material for the +6 to +7 step.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can Somber Smithing Stone [7] upgrade a weapon from +0 directly to +7?
No. The weapon must be a Somber-upgrade special armament currently at +6. Earlier levels require Somber Smithing Stones [1] through [6].
Where is the best place to get unlimited Somber Smithing Stone [7]?
Find Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing [4] on a corpse just north of the Tempest-Facing Balcony Site of Grace in Crumbling Farum Azula. Offer it to the Twin Maiden Husks at Roundtable Hold, then purchase Somber Smithing Stone [7] for 16,000 Runes each.
Is the Volcano Manor stone the earliest possible Somber Smithing Stone [7]?
It is best described as one of the earliest practical intended pickups for ordinary progression. Sequence breaks, multiplayer assistance, unusual routing, and glitches can change what a player reaches first, so an absolute earliest claim is not reliable.
Does the DLC add an unlimited Somber Smithing Stone [7] source?
No new unlimited source is needed. Shadow of the Erdtree adds four fixed Somber Smithing Stone [7] pickups, while the base-game Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing [4] remains the route to unlimited purchases.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe Bottom Line
For one immediate Somber Smithing Stone [7], use the two-Stonesword-Key Imp Statue route in Volcano Manor. For every later weapon, reach Crumbling Farum Azula, loot Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing [4] near Tempest-Facing Balcony, and offer it to the Twin Maiden Husks. That unlocks unlimited Somber Smithing Stone [7] purchases at 16,000 Runes each.
