What Somber Smithing Stone [8] does
Use this material to strengthen a compatible special armament to +8. Eldenpedia reproduces the in-game description as: “Large polar smithing stone drained of color. Strengthens special armaments to +8. Special armaments with unique characteristics cannot be strengthened with colored smithing stones. Number of steps and amount strengthened differ from standard equipment.” Eldenpedia’s Somber Smithing Stone [8] entry attributes the effect to the item description.
The item is for weapons on the special-weapon upgrade path. It does not upgrade every weapon, and the “8” refers to the resulting Somber level: a successful upgrade brings a compatible armament to +8.

Eldenpedia describes Somber Smithing Stones as a numbered sequence that advances special armaments one tier at a time through +10. Regular Smithing Stones follow their own progression for ordinary armaments. The shared number in the item names does not make the materials substitutes. Which weapon does it upgrade?
It upgrades a compatible special armament that is ready to advance to Somber +8. The item is not tied to one named weapon; eligibility depends on the weapon’s upgrade track. If a weapon uses regular Smithing Stones, Somber Smithing Stone [8] is not its material.
