1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSome boxed Nintendo Switch 2 games use a Game-Key Card: the card lets you download the game, but does not contain the full game data. You need an internet connection and enough storage for the initial download, and the card must stay inserted whenever you play. Other Switch 2 releases use regular game cards, so check the specific edition and region before buying.
What a Game-Key Card contains—and what it does not
A Game-Key Card is a physical card that acts as a key to download a game onto a Nintendo Switch 2. It is not a cartridge containing the full game data. After downloading, the console runs the installed game, but it checks for the card to start it. Nintendo describes the format and its use in its Switch 2 Game-Key Card FAQ.

“Physical release” does not always mean the same thing. Nintendo Switch 2 supports regular game cards as well as Game-Key Cards. Some physical packages may instead contain a download code without any card, while Nintendo says physical Switch 2 Edition games include the Switch game and its upgrade pack on one card. The format is specific to the release, so verify the package or product page for the region and edition you intend to buy.
What you need to download and play one
- Internet for the initial download: Insert the card and follow the console’s download instructions. Nintendo says an internet connection is needed for this first setup.
- Enough free storage: The game data can be saved to the console’s internal storage or a compatible microSD Express card. Nintendo says the required space is shown on the package and digital product listing. See Nintendo’s storage guidance.
- No Nintendo Account for the download: Nintendo says an account is not required to download the game data.
- The card to start the game: Keep the Game-Key Card inserted to launch the downloaded game. Once it has been downloaded, Nintendo says the game can be started offline, unless the game itself requires online access.
What happens if you move the card to another Switch 2?
You can use the Game-Key Card on another Switch 2, but the game data is not carried on the card. Nintendo says you must download the title to that console before playing it there for the first time, and that first launch requires an internet connection. Save data is stored in the console’s internal storage, according to Nintendo’s platform-use FAQ.

Why Nintendo introduced the format
Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa described Game-Key Cards at the company’s 85th Annual General Meeting Q&A in 2025 as “one of the new software distribution methods we have introduced to accommodate the larger game data sizes on Nintendo Switch 2 compared to Nintendo Switch.” Nintendo also said software could be released in different formats and that it would continue working with publishers to support the platform. That is Nintendo’s stated rationale; the statement does not establish a particular cartridge cost or capacity limit as the reason.

Release formats can vary by title, edition, and region. Nintendo Life’s guide, last updated November 18, 2025, lists examples including Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Bravely Default: Flying Fairy HD Remaster, and Cronos: The New Dawn, while distinguishing some Japan-confirmed cases from Western-market formats. These are dated examples, not a complete catalog or confirmation of what is in every regional box. For a purchase, check the current package label or the publisher’s or Nintendo’s product page for that specific region and edition.

If your internal storage is sufficient, a microSD Express card is optional.
