In the U.S. at launch, Nintendo listed Mario Kart World at $79.99 and Donkey Kong Bananza at $69.99. Those were the same prices for physical and digital versions at the time. Nintendo’s later pricing policy changes the picture for a specific category of new digital games beginning in May 2026.

These are announced suggested retail prices, not guaranteed current checkout prices. Retailers set their own prices, and a game’s price can vary by title and store, as Nintendo explains on its game pricing support page.
Are Switch 2 physical games more expensive than digital?
It depends on the title, region, and when its price was announced. At the U.S. launch, Nintendo listed Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza at the same suggested price in both formats. That does not establish a permanent rule for future releases.

Nintendo’s May 2026 U.S. policy
Nintendo says that starting with preorders for Yoshi and the Mysterious Book in May 2026, new Nintendo-published digital games exclusive to Switch 2 will have an MSRP different from their physical versions. This policy is limited to that category of Nintendo-published Switch 2 exclusives; it should not be read as a rule for every publisher or every previously announced game.
Nintendo says the format difference reflects “the different costs associated with producing and distributing each format” and gives players more choice. This is Nintendo’s explanation for the physical-versus-digital policy, not a general explanation for why one game’s MSRP is higher than another’s. The company also notes that retail partners set their own prices for both formats.

Japan is a separate example
Nintendo Co., Ltd.’s April 2, 2025 Japanese announcement listed Mario Kart World at ¥8,980 digitally and ¥9,980 physically. That is a Japan-specific MSRP example and should not be treated as a worldwide pricing rule or compared directly with U.S. dollar prices.
Why are some Switch 2 games more expensive?
The announced prices establish that some Nintendo-published games have higher MSRPs than others; they do not establish a general reason for the difference between individual titles. Nintendo’s stated production-and-distribution-cost explanation applies to its May 2026 policy for differing MSRPs between physical and digital versions in the specified category. It does not explain why Mario Kart World launched at a higher U.S. MSRP than Donkey Kong Bananza.

There is also no single, supported percentage by which Switch 2 games are more expensive than original Switch games: a valid comparison would need a matched set of titles, formats, regions, and dates. The figures above are specific announced prices, not evidence that every Switch 2 game costs more than every Switch game.

Nintendo announced a limited-time U.S. Choose Your Game Bundle for $499.99, pairing a Switch 2 system with a digital code for Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza, or Pokémon Pokopia. Nintendo described the offer as worth up to $29.99 compared with buying the system and game separately at MSRP. Availability, timing, and savings depend on participating retailers, so check the retailer’s current terms and price rather than treating the bundle figure as a standing offer.
