It is not just a graphics demake. The port carries over Halo’s weapons, physics, collision, game rules, HUD, first-person arms and pathfinding, then rebuilds the renderer, sound, menus and platform code for the N64.
What Halo 64 actually is
Halo 64 uses the halo-ce-universal decompilation for gameplay systems and adds Nintendo 64-specific code with libdragon and tiny3d. Maps are converted from the player’s own Xbox copy of Halo: Combat Evolved during the build process; the repository does not include retail game data.

The main release is a multiplayer cartridge. A separate campaign cartridge exists, but it is an early, incomplete experiment rather than a finished recreation of the Xbox campaign.
What you can play

Local split-screen supports one to four players, with each player using a separate controller. The rules include Slayer, Team Slayer, Slayer Pro, Team Slayer Pro, Capture the Flag, King of the Hill, Oddball and Race, including their team variants. Bots can fill a match at four skill levels, while the pause scoreboard can track up to 12 participants.
Firefight
Firefight adds wave-based battles to the multiplayer maps. Grunts, Jackals and Elites attack one to four players, who share a pool of lives. Four difficulty settings are available.
The separate campaign cartridge
The repository also documents a campaign cartridge containing the “Halo” level. It includes Marines and Covenant with simplified artificial intelligence, checkpoints, four difficulty settings and the Warthog. It has no cutscenes or scripts, and the level’s second BSP section is not included. Treat it as a technical preview, not the complete campaign.

Halo details that survived the conversion
The port preserves the recognizable systems that make the game feel like Halo rather than a loosely themed shooter:
- Shield, health, ammunition and motion-sensor HUD elements
- First-person weapon models and weapon sounds
- Vehicle sounds and menu music
- N64 Rumble Pak support
- Multiple control schemes
- Settings saved to EEPROM
Those features are in addition to the gameplay systems inherited from the decompilation: object behavior, physics, collision, weapons, game types and pathfinding.
Why the hardware mismatch is so extreme
According to JackTulli’s 2026 repository README, the Nintendo 64 runs at 93.75 MHz and has 8 MB with the Expansion Pak. The original Xbox is listed at 733 MHz with 64 MB.

| System | CPU figure in the project README | Memory figure in the project README |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo 64 | 93.75 MHz VR4300 | 8 MB with Expansion Pak |
| Original Xbox | 733 MHz | 64 MB |
That gap is why this project is notable. The port has to make every asset and update fit a machine designed years before Halo shipped.
Cartridge streaming and data conversion
Map data is converted into a big-endian format suitable for the N64. Models, textures and animations are streamed from the cartridge instead of being held in memory at once, and texture formats are reduced. The game still runs its core simulation at 30 ticks per second, but distant or inactive objects and artificial intelligence update less often to free processing time.
A rebuilt renderer and platform layer
The renderer uses tiny3d batches, baked lighting and culling to limit what the N64 must draw. HUD elements are recorded per view so split-screen players can each receive the correct interface. The platform layer supplies N64 input, rendering, particles, sound, animation streaming, menus and the exception handling needed by the decompiled code.
Rank #4
- Master Chief can now wield two weapons at once, board Covenant vehicles and steal Covenant weapons like the incredible double energy sword
- Lead an all-new unit of super-soldiers, the ODST -- tougher, badder and deadlier versions of your old comrades
- New enemies, allies and surprises around every corner - intense combat action with enhanced AI and real-time lighting
- Immense single-player action with maassive landscapes and huge cities to explore and defend - destructible and interactive environments
- Take the action online with your Xbox Live and switch sides, to become a Covenant Elite!
Performance depends on the scene
There is no single published frame-rate figure for every situation. Performance changes with the map, number of split-screen views and bot count. The project includes an FPS-counter setting so players can inspect a particular match instead of relying on a universal benchmark.
What you need to play Halo 64
- An original Xbox copy or image of Halo: Combat Evolved. The builder converts your maps locally, and the repository contains no retail data.
- An Expansion Pak if you are using original N64 hardware.
- A compatible N64 flash cartridge for real hardware, or an accurate emulator. The project documents ares as its emulator option.
- A build environment. The repository provides a Windows ROM Builder and Linux/WSL build instructions.
The source build produces a ROM of roughly 63 MB according to the README, so storage and flash-cartridge compatibility matter.

- Prepare your own game files. Use your legally obtained Xbox copy or image of Halo: Combat Evolved. The project does not supply the retail assets.
- Choose a build environment. Use the supplied Windows ROM Builder, or follow the Linux/WSL instructions in the repository.
- Run the map conversion during the build. The builder transforms the maps and required assets into the N64-oriented data used by the port.
- Produce the ROM image. The resulting
.z64image is approximately 63 MB for the source build described in the README. - Run it on your chosen platform. Load the image through a compatible N64 flash cartridge with an Expansion Pak, or open it in the documented ares emulator.
- Keep the built image private. The project README instructs users to keep the ROM they build to themselves because it contains data converted from the retail game.
What this is—and is not
Halo 64 is a genuine multiplayer port, not a video, a visual mock-up or a homebrew game that merely borrows Halo’s art style. It supports the original multiplayer maps, four-player split screen, bots, Firefight and many of Halo’s familiar interface and audio cues on N64-era hardware.

It is also not a complete one-cartridge replacement for the Xbox release. The primary build is multiplayer, and the separate campaign cartridge lacks cutscenes, scripts and part of its level. The project’s compromises—streamed assets, reduced textures, culling and less frequent updates for distant activity—are the engineering choices that make the playable portion possible.
The Bottom Line
Halo 64 proves that recognizable Halo: Combat Evolved multiplayer can run on an actual Nintendo 64, provided you build it from your own game data and have the required Expansion Pak and loading method. The campaign experiment exists, but the complete experience is currently the multiplayer port.
