Choose Sonic Origins Plus if you want a collection of classic Sonic games; choose Sonic Mania if you want a separate classic-style adventure. Origins Plus gathers older games in one package, while Mania is its own game—not a compilation. The two “Plus” editions expand different products, so check which one you are buying.
What is the difference between Sonic Origins and Sonic Mania?
Sonic Origins is a collection built around four previously released mainline games. Sonic Mania is a distinct 2D, high-speed action game made in a classic style. In short, Origins is for revisiting classic games; Mania is for playing a separate adventure in that style.

The expanded editions are not interchangeable. Sonic Origins Plus adds content to the Origins collection, while Sonic Mania Plus is an expanded edition of Mania. SEGA describes Mania Plus as a physical release of the digital Sonic Mania game with added content; it is not a new sequel. SEGA Asia’s Mania page details the Plus additions, including material related to Mighty and Ray.
What do the games include?
| Edition | What it includes | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Sonic Origins | Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic CD, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles. | Players who want the core collection without the Plus additions. |
| Sonic Origins Plus | The four main games, 12 Game Gear titles, playable Amy in the four main games, and playable Knuckles in Sonic CD. | Players who want the broadest catalog in the Origins package. |
| Sonic Mania | A separate classic-style Sonic game. | Players who want a distinct adventure rather than a collection. |
| Sonic Mania Plus | Sonic Mania with added content, including content associated with Mighty and Ray. | Players considering the expanded Mania release; confirm the contents of the specific regional edition. |
SEGA’s Origins manual identifies the four main games and describes the modes and features. Nintendo’s US Switch listing also names the four games and Plus additions.

How do Sonic Origins’ modes change the experience?
Origins offers two presentations of its classic games. Anniversary Mode uses widescreen 16:9 and gives players infinite attempts rather than a Game Over/Continue limit. Coins can be used for certain retries and unlocks. Classic Mode uses the original 4:3 presentation and rules, including limited tries and a time limit. These differences make Origins flexible: you can choose a more forgiving modern presentation or retain the older constraints.
The manual also documents Story, Mission, Boss Rush, Mirror Mode, a Museum, and rankings. These are features described for Origins; they should not be assumed to be exclusive to Plus. SEGA’s mode overview explains the modes, and its added-features page covers Plus additions.

Which one should you play?
Choose Sonic Origins Plus to explore the classic catalog
- You want several foundational Sonic games together rather than one separate adventure.
- You are new to the older games and want to sample the four main titles, with 12 Game Gear games included in Plus.
- You want a choice between Origins’ widescreen, infinite-attempt Anniversary Mode and its 4:3 Classic Mode with original rules.
Choose Sonic Mania if you want a distinct adventure
- You have already played the main classic games, or would rather start with a separate game than revisit them.
- You want a classic-style 2D action game rather than a compilation.
- You are considering Mania Plus specifically for its added content; verify what the edition in your region includes.
These recommendations follow from the official product descriptions and included content, not comparative playtesting. Neither choice is a universal upgrade over the other: they answer different preferences.
What should you check before buying?
- Confirm the exact edition. Origins Plus and Mania Plus add content to different products. A listing for “Plus” does not mean you are buying the same kind of package.
- Check your platform and region. SEGA’s Japan-market Origins Plus announcement lists PS5, PS4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Steam, and Epic Games Store for that market, and distinguishes the Plus packaged product from the Expansion Pack for existing Origins owners. It also says Xbox and PC are download-only in Japan. Those details are market-specific; check the storefront or retailer listing for your location and platform.
- If you own Origins, compare the upgrade route. SEGA confirms a Plus Expansion Pack exists for existing Origins owners. Whether it is a better value than buying Origins Plus depends on the current price and availability in your region.
- For Mania Plus, verify the actual release. SEGA’s Japan-market product page lists PS4 and Switch and documents a Japanese physical release, but this does not establish current stock, universal platform availability, or identical physical contents in every country.
- Check current price, stock, and download requirements. These can vary by storefront and edition. The cited product information does not establish today’s price or whether every physical copy contains all Plus content on the disc or cartridge.
Verdict
For a collection of classic Sonic games, choose Sonic Origins Plus. For a separate classic-style adventure, choose Sonic Mania—and consider Mania Plus if you want that game’s expanded edition. Confirm the regional listing before purchasing, especially for physical releases and upgrades.
