Sonic the Hedgehog 4 has started filming. Director Jeff Fowler marked the production start with a behind-the-scenes image featuring a clapperboard and a prop identified by Game Informer as what appeared to be Amy Rose’s hammer. The film is scheduled to open in theaters on March 19, 2027.
What Jeff Fowler revealed
Fowler’s reported post showed him holding a clapperboard alongside the hammer-shaped prop. Its accompanying message read: “Ready 4 Action. #SonicMovie4 now filming. In Theaters Worldwide March 2027.” Game Informer reported the post on March 2, 2026.

The official film website lists March 19, 2027 as the theatrical release date. Fowler’s reported post gave the month as March 2027 and described the release as worldwide. Release dates can change, so check the official site for the latest schedule.

The production-start post and the current official film page do not provide a plot synopsis, a complete cast list, a streaming service, or a home-release date. The image alone does not establish which characters or story events the film will feature.
SEGA has announced licensed Sonic the Hedgehog 4 merchandise through a multi-year partnership with JAKKS Pacific and its costume division, Disguise. The planned product categories include action figures, plush, playsets, role-play products, costumes, and costume accessories, with products slated to reach the market in early 2027. The announcement does not give specific product models or establish that purchase-ready listings are available now. SEGA’s announcement quotes President and COO Shuji Utsumi: “As we look ahead to Sonic the Hedgehog 4, we’re excited to continue building on that success together and deliver even more innovative designs for Sonic fans of all ages.”

How big is the Sonic franchise?
SEGA reported that the Sonic franchise had reached “1.77 billion units in sales and free-to-play downloads.” This is a combined franchise figure, not a movie box-office total. SEGA’s 2026 announcement is the source for the figure.
