Sonic X Shadow Generations was met with mostly positive critic reviews, according to the review labels and excerpts shown on Metacritic. That reception is not unanimous, and the game’s appeal depends in part on which of its two campaigns you want to play: an enhanced Sonic Generations adventure or a new story centered on Shadow.
What does “mostly positive” mean for this game?
Metacritic’s review page labels the reception positive and features excerpts praising the package’s presentation, content, and gameplay, alongside individual reviews that raise criticisms or caveats. That supports a broad description of the response, not a claim that every critic agreed.

What is included in Sonic X Shadow Generations?
SEGA describes the release as combining two games. The first is an enhanced version of Sonic Generations, which brings together Classic Sonic and Modern Sonic for stage-based speed runs with new elements. The second is Shadow Generations, a new campaign built around Shadow.

- Harness Shadow's new Doom Powers to battle hordes of enemies and tackle platforming challenges like never before. Surf on water, fly over obstacles, and stop time with the return of Chaos Control!

| Campaign | Focus | Best fit for players who want |
|---|---|---|
| Sonic Generations | Classic and Modern Sonic tackle stages in their distinct styles. | The returning Sonic Generations experience, refreshed with new elements. |
| Shadow Generations | Shadow races through dynamic environments in a new adventure. | A campaign focused on Shadow and his abilities. |
SEGA’s January 24, 2025 announcement describes the package as combining the two games. It also reported that the title had surpassed two million units sold worldwide as of that announcement; this is a dated milestone, not a current sales total.
How is Shadow Generations different?
Shadow’s campaign gives the bundle a different focus from the Sonic Generations content. In its launch announcement, SEGA said Shadow can use Doom Powers to battle enemies, surf on water, and take on platforming challenges. These abilities are part of the advertised gameplay distinction; they do not establish that one campaign is better than the other.

The available review evidence supports positive reception for the package overall, but it does not establish a universal preference between the two campaigns. Consider whether you are more interested in the returning Classic-and-Modern Sonic stages or a new Shadow-led adventure.

- Shadow the Hedgehog is back and teaming up with Classic and Modern Sonic in Sonic X Shadow Generations, an all-new collection featuring two unique experiences!
- Play as Shadow the Hedgehog in a brand-new story campaign, and tackle iconic 2D and 3D stages as Classic and Modern Sonic in a newly remastered version of Sonic Generations.
SEGA’s June 5, 2025 announcement repeated the two-million-unit worldwide sales milestone and described the Steam rating as “Overwhelmingly Positive” at that time. That Steam label is a dated statement, not a current rating.
Is it worth playing?
The mostly positive critic reception makes Sonic X Shadow Generations a reasonable option to consider if either campaign matches what you want from a Sonic game. The bundle’s clearest point of distinction is that it pairs familiar Sonic Generations content with a separate Shadow adventure, rather than offering only one of those experiences.
Before buying, match the store listing to your platform and edition. Platform-specific performance comparisons are not established by the review information summarized here, so do not assume the versions are technically identical or different without checking evidence for the version you plan to play.
