If you only want a few older Sonic games, buying those titles separately can cost less, particularly when they are discounted or already in your library. There is no defensible universal savings percentage because prices, editions, regions and your existing purchases differ.
SEGA does not appear to sell a product formally called Shadow Collection. The name generally refers to SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS, a combined release containing two experiences. The official listings checked present Shadow Generations as a campaign included in that release, not as a separately listed game.

What you are actually comparing
The phrase Shadow Collection is convenient shorthand, but it is not the product name used by SEGA. The relevant release is SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS. Its package combines a remaster of Sonic Generations with a separate Shadow Generations campaign. SEGA describes the package as two unique experiences, with Shadow the Hedgehog appearing alongside Classic and Modern Sonic.

#1 Best Overall
- Past meets present in SONIC GENERATIONS! Modern and Classic Sonic team up to defeat Dr. Eggman and the Time Eater to restore their timeline to normal!
- Spin dash through a greatest-hits collection of 3D and 2D versions of iconic stages from past Sonic games, now with updated visuals and reworked cinematics
- In this new standalone campaign, Black Doom has reemerged and threatens to take over the world. Shadow must journey into his past, confront his memories, and unlock new dark powers to save the world.
- Harness Shadow's new Doom Powers to battle hordes of enemies and tackle platforming challenges like never before. Surf on water, fly over obstacles, and stop time with the return of Chaos Control!
- Rescue Chao hiding in every level, rack up the highest pinball score in the Casino Nights zone, and check out the museum for behind-the-scenes art, music, and more!
- The combined release: both experiences in one purchase, with Standard and Digital Deluxe editions.
- Individual purchases: whichever older Sonic games you specifically want, bought on your platform at the prices available in your region.
The official product and store pages consulted do not list Shadow Generations as an independent purchase. Therefore, the question Can I buy Shadow Generations separately? currently has a practical answer: not through the official listings examined. Availability can change by platform or territory, so check your local store before paying for a key or import that claims to be a standalone version.
The price evidence, with dates and regional limits
Published prices are useful reference points, not guarantees of what your checkout will show. The following figures come from specific listings and dates.
| Route or edition | Observed price | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Steam Standard Edition | $49.99 | US store listing retrieved in 2026; store price may change. |
| Steam Digital Deluxe Edition | $59.99 | US store listing retrieved in 2026; store price may change. |
| Japanese Standard Edition launch MSRP | ¥6,589 including tax | SEGA’s suggested retail price at the 2024 Japanese launch, not a current global quote. |
| Sonic the Hedgehog Legacy Bundle on Steam | $59.99 USD | Price cited in SEGA’s 2024 FAQ when explaining where the original Sonic Generations remained available after delisting; contents and price vary by region. |
None of these figures establishes the current price of every Sonic game individually. A total for individual purchases would require a defined list of games, a platform, a country, the editions you want, current discounts and information about games you already own. Those variables are why a claim such as the collection is always cheaper would be misleading.
What each purchase route gives you
SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS Standard Edition
The Standard Edition is the relevant baseline if you want the remastered Sonic Generations content and the Shadow campaign together. It avoids the problem of assembling two experiences from separate store pages and gives you one platform-specific license or disc. The $49.99 Steam figure above is a dated US example only; console and physical prices may be different.
Digital Deluxe Edition
Steam’s listing describes Deluxe extras including music tracks, a Terios character skin, behind-the-scenes art and a movie pack. These are optional additions rather than a second campaign. The retrieved US Steam listing showed $59.99 for Digital Deluxe, a $10 difference from that listing’s Standard Edition. Decide whether you would actually use the extras before treating the higher tier as better value. If you only want the two core experiences, compare the Standard price with your alternatives.
Older Sonic games purchased one at a time
Individual buying is not one fixed basket. You might want only a particular classic title, a modern release you missed, or several games that are already discounted. Make a list before comparing prices. Include the exact edition and platform, because a remaster, a legacy port and a subscription entitlement are not interchangeable products even when their names are similar.

A subscription catalogue
The US PlayStation product page indicates access through the PlayStation Plus Extra catalogue. That is an access benefit tied to an eligible subscription, not a permanent purchase. Check whether the game is in the catalogue in your country, whether your current tier qualifies and how much of your existing subscription cost you are assigning to this game. If you already pay for Extra for other reasons, the incremental cost may be lower than buying a new copy; if you would subscribe solely for this game, compare the full additional subscription expense and the risk that catalogue availability changes.

Why the original Sonic Generations listing matters to PC buyers
SEGA’s FAQ states that the original version of Sonic Generations was delisted as a standalone Steam purchase on September 9, 2024. It remained available as part of the Sonic the Hedgehog Legacy Bundle. The FAQ cited a $59.99 USD bundle price and explicitly warned that contents and price can vary by region.
This creates two common traps. First, a search result may describe the old game as individually available even though its standalone Steam listing has been removed. Second, the Legacy Bundle is not automatically equivalent to SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS: bundle contents, included games and regional pricing are different questions. Verify the current store page and the exact contents shown for your account before assuming that a bundle supplies the experiences you want.
The delisting does not establish a universal value winner. It simply means that PC buyers may have fewer ways to buy the original game by itself, while console buyers may encounter different physical and digital availability.
A decision framework that produces your own answer
1. Define the experiences you will actually play
Write two separate requirements: the Shadow Generations campaign, and the remastered Sonic Generations content. Mark each as required, optional or unwanted. If both are required, the combined release is the direct route identified by the official listings. If Shadow is optional and you only care about selected older Sonic games, do not pay for a combined package merely because its name sounds comprehensive.
2. Record what you already own
Check every relevant storefront and physical shelf. An existing copy has already been paid for, so its original price should not be counted again when you evaluate a new purchase. Instead, ask what additional content the new release supplies: a remaster, the Shadow campaign, convenience on a different platform, or Deluxe extras. Ownership can make an individual route attractive for someone who needs only one missing title, while it can also make the combined release worthwhile if it adds the experience you do not have.

3. Fix the platform and region
Choose the platform on which you will play before comparing numbers. Record your store country, currency, digital or physical format, and whether you can use a subscription catalogue. Prices and availability can differ across Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and physical retailers. A Japanese launch MSRP, a US Steam snapshot and a local disc price should never be treated as if they were simultaneous offers in one market.
4. Build an itemised individual basket
For each older Sonic game you want, note the title, edition, platform, current price, sale end date if shown, and whether it is a permanent purchase or catalogue access. Add only games you would genuinely buy. Do not include every game in a franchise simply to make the collection look better value.
5. Compare like with like
Use this calculation:
Individual route total = sum of the prices for your chosen games − the value of discounts or entitlements you can actually use

Keep Deluxe extras in a separate line rather than quietly mixing cosmetic or soundtrack value into the price of the core games. If a subscription supplies catalogue access, show its additional cost as its own scenario instead of calling it a free copy.
6. Check practical constraints
- Confirm that your console or PC supports the edition you are buying.
- For a physical copy, check the disc or cartridge region, required downloads and whether the seller is offering the Standard or Deluxe product.
- For a digital purchase, confirm the account region and the platform license you will receive.
- For a subscription, check the current catalogue page, tier requirement and any expiration or removal notices.
- For a bundle, read the current contents list; historical bundle descriptions may no longer match the store page.
Scenario-by-scenario value
| Your situation | Likely better-value direction | Reason to verify before buying |
|---|---|---|
| You want both the new Shadow campaign and remastered Sonic Generations. | SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS Standard Edition | It is the official combined route identified in the listings; compare your local price and platform availability. |
| You want only one or two older Sonic games. | Individual purchases, if discounted or already available on your platform | There is no universal individual-game total; price the exact titles and editions you want. |
| You already own Sonic Generations and are deciding whether to add Shadow. | Calculate the incremental value of the combined release | The existing game lowers what you still need, but the official listings checked do not show Shadow Generations separately. |
| You want music, art, the Terios skin and the movie pack. | Digital Deluxe, only if the extras matter to you | Extras do not add another campaign; compare the Deluxe premium with your personal use of each item. |
| You already subscribe to PlayStation Plus Extra. | Catalogue access may have the lowest additional cost | Confirm current local eligibility and catalogue presence; the subscription is not the same as owning the game. |
| You are shopping on Steam for the original Sonic Generations. | Check the Legacy Bundle or the current combined release | The standalone original was delisted on September 9, 2024; bundle contents and price vary by region. |
How to avoid misleading comparisons
Do not compare a launch MSRP with a sale price
The ¥6,589 Japanese figure is a launch-era suggested retail price including tax. A discounted digital copy in another country is a different market event. Label every number with its country, date and edition, and convert currencies only for orientation; currency conversion does not remove regional taxes, platform pricing or retailer margins.
Do not treat catalogue access as ownership
A subscription can be excellent value when you already maintain it, but access generally depends on an active plan and catalogue eligibility. If you cancel, change tiers or the title leaves the catalogue, your access can change. For a long-term collection, compare the cost of a permanent license or disc as well.

Do not assume a bundle contains every Sonic game
The Legacy Bundle reference in SEGA’s FAQ is evidence about where the original Sonic Generations remained available, not a promise that it includes every Sonic release or the Shadow Generations campaign. Read the live contents list and regional store description.
Do not pay Deluxe pricing for unwanted extras
Music, artwork, a character skin and a movie pack can be meaningful to a collector and irrelevant to someone seeking only playable campaigns. Price the Standard Edition first, then add a separate personal value for extras. Avoid counting an item at full retail value if you would never have bought it on its own.
Physical versus digital buying
A physical copy can be useful if you lend games, resell discs or want a shelf collection, but availability and pricing depend on territory, platform and stock. Confirm whether the package is Standard or Deluxe and whether the advertised language or region works on your system. A digital copy is usually tied to the purchasing account and platform, so check the correct storefront before completing payment. Neither format changes the core content comparison: the relevant question remains whether you need both included experiences or only selected older games.
What the evidence can and cannot prove
The available official listings establish the structure of the combined product, dated reference prices, the original Steam delisting and the indicated PlayStation Plus Extra access. They do not establish a current worldwide price for every individual Sonic title, a guaranteed discount, a universal savings percentage or a permanent catalogue position. They also do not show Shadow Generations as a separately listed purchase.
That limitation is useful rather than inconvenient. A value decision should be based on your actual basket, not a headline percentage calculated from mismatched regions or outdated sales. Save a screenshot or note the store price and contents on the day you buy, especially when a sale or subscription catalogue is involved.
Bottom line for different buyers
Choose the Standard Edition of SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS when your must-have list contains both the remastered Sonic Generations experience and the Shadow Generations campaign. It is the evidenced all-in-one route, and the retrieved US Steam listing provides a dated benchmark of $49.99.
Choose individual Sonic games when your list is narrower, you already own one of the included experiences, or current discounts make the exact older titles you want cheaper. Build that comparison from your local store rather than from the Japanese launch MSRP or another country’s Steam price.
Choose Digital Deluxe only when its music, Terios skin, behind-the-scenes art and movie pack justify the premium to you. Treat PlayStation Plus Extra as conditional access, not ownership, and verify the current catalogue. For PC shoppers, remember that the original Sonic Generations standalone Steam listing was removed in September 2024 and is referenced by SEGA as remaining in the Legacy Bundle, whose contents and price vary by region.
