Sony has not announced an official retail price for the PlayStation 6. Speaking about future-generation consoles, Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki said the company had “not yet decided on” either the launch window or the price tag. That makes $1,000, $1,200 and similar PS6 figures circulating online speculation—not Sony pricing.
What Sony officially said about PS6 pricing
Totoki’s comments were reported by GamesRadar+ on May 8, 2026. He said Sony is monitoring memory-market conditions, considering ways to reduce hardware costs beyond semiconductors, and evaluating how a future console could be sold. In the same discussion, he added: “Also, we might think of new ways of selling the product,” referring to the company’s future-generation hardware plans.

Those statements establish uncertainty, not a price range. Sony has not published a PS6 MSRP, announced a final hardware configuration, or confirmed a launch date in the available official material. Any exact dollar amount presented as a confirmed PS6 price is therefore unsupported.

Memory and component costs
Totoki specifically pointed to memory-market conditions. Memory pricing and availability can change a console’s bill of materials, especially when a new system requires substantially more capacity or faster components. Sony is also looking at ways to lower costs in areas other than semiconductors, indicating that the eventual price will depend on the entire manufacturing and supply chain rather than one chip alone.

A possible change in how consoles are sold
Sony has not explained what “new ways of selling” would mean. The comment could refer to a different product mix, packaging, financing or another commercial structure, but no model has been announced. It should not be treated as confirmation of a subscription-only console, a bundled service requirement or any other specific sales plan.
Investment has started, but the product details are not final
Sony’s FY25 earnings speech says its FY26 operating-income guidance includes “an increase in investments for the next-generation platform.” This confirms continuing development and spending on a successor platform; it does not disclose the PS6’s specifications, launch timing or consumer price.
Current PlayStation prices provide the only official U.S. reference points
Sony’s PlayStation Blog announcement dated March 27, 2026 said the following U.S. prices would take effect on April 2, 2026. These are current-generation prices, not PS6 guidance.

| Product | U.S. price effective April 2, 2026 | What it tells us |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 Digital Edition | $599.99 | Official lower-priced current-generation console anchor |
| PS5 | $649.99 | Official standard PS5 reference price |
| PS5 Pro | $899.99 | Official premium-tier current-generation reference |
| PlayStation Portal remote player | $249.99 | Accessory price, not a console comparison |
Sony attributed those increases to “continued pressures in the global economic landscape.” The figures show the prices Sony is currently using in the U.S.; they do not establish what a later-generation system will cost.
How to interpret the $1,000 PS6 claims
A $1,000 PS6 prediction may be based on the $899.99 PS5 Pro price, expected component inflation, or an assumption that the next console will launch as a premium model. None of those is a Sony decision. The company has not said whether the first PS6 model will be a standard system, a premium system, or a range with multiple tiers.
- Confirmed: Sony is increasing investment in a next-generation platform.
- Confirmed: Sony is considering memory conditions and other hardware costs.
- Not confirmed: A PS6 retail price, including $999 or $1,200 estimates.
- Not confirmed: A PS6 launch window or release date.
- Not confirmed: A new sales model and what it would include.
What Sony’s installed base means for timing and pricing
Sony’s FY25 materials report 125 million monthly active PlayStation accounts in March 2026 and cumulative PS5 sales above 93 million at the end of March. That installed base gives Sony a large audience to monetize while it develops the next platform. It also reduces the need to rush a successor before the company is satisfied with component availability, cost targets and the commercial plan.

These figures do not predict a PS6 launch date. They explain why Sony can continue supporting and selling PS5 hardware while next-generation investment increases.

What to watch for before treating a PS6 price as official
- Look for a Sony Interactive Entertainment announcement that names the console and states an MSRP or regional price.
- Check whether the figure applies to the U.S. or another market; prices vary by country, taxes and exchange rates.
- Confirm whether the figure is for a standard model, a digital edition, a premium model or a bundle.
- Separate a one-time launch bundle or retailer price from Sony’s recommended retail price.
- Require a confirmed launch window and product specifications before using component-based estimates as anything more than forecasts.
Until Sony publishes those details, the accurate answer to “How much will the PS6 cost?” is that no official price has been set. The PS5 Digital Edition at $599.99, PS5 at $649.99 and PS5 Pro at $899.99 are useful benchmarks, but they are not PS6 prices.
