Sony INZONE H9 II Review: Great Sound, High Price

Sony’s INZONE H9 II is a comfortable, great-sounding PS5 and PC headset with effective ANC and a strong microphone. It is much easier to recommend below its $349.99 MSRP.

Verdict: The Sony INZONE H9 II is an excellent premium wireless gaming headset for PS5 and PC, combining low weight, effective noise cancellation, a strong boom microphone, simultaneous 2.4GHz and Bluetooth connections, and enjoyable sound. Its problem is the price: at Sony’s $349.99 U.S. MSRP, it is difficult to recommend over rivals with longer battery life, replaceable batteries, or higher-end drivers. At the $299.99 price seen on Sony’s U.S. store on August 18, 2026, it becomes a much stronger buy.

Quick verdict

Sony INZONE H9 II
Best for PS5 and PC players who want comfort, ANC, good sound, and phone connectivity
Not for Buyers prioritizing maximum battery life, hot-swappable batteries, or absolute audio value
U.S. MSRP $349.99
Price checked $299.99 on Sony U.S., August 18, 2026
Battery claim Up to 30 hours, depending on settings and connections
Connections 2.4GHz USB-C transceiver, Bluetooth/LE Audio, and 3.5mm wired

The H9 II makes the most sense when its specific strengths matter: you play in a noisy room, want a lightweight headset for long sessions, use both PS5 and PC, and appreciate taking phone calls without abandoning game audio. If you play in a quiet room or want the longest possible runtime for your money, its premium is harder to justify.

Sony lists the H9 II at $349.99 in the U.S. The same listing showed a temporary $50 discount to $299.99 on August 18, 2026; prices and availability can change.

What is the INZONE H9 II?

The INZONE H9 II is Sony’s flagship gaming headset and the successor to the original INZONE H9. It is designed specifically for PS5 and PC rather than being a regular noise-canceling headphone with a microphone added afterward.

Its feature set includes active noise cancellation, a supplied 2.4GHz USB-C wireless transceiver, Bluetooth and LE Audio, a detachable boom microphone, 360 Spatial Sound for Gaming, and support for Sony’s INZONE Hub and Sony | Sound Connect software. It is sold in black and white variants under the WH-G910N model family, with U.S. listings using WH-G910NB and WH-G910NW.

Sony says the headset was developed with Fnatic and uses the same driver unit as the WH-1000XM6. That is a hardware-origin claim, not evidence that the H9 II sounds identical to Sony’s premium travel headphones. The enclosure, earcups, acoustic damping, DSP, microphone, ANC implementation, and tuning are all different.

Sound quality

Games, music, and movies

The H9 II has a clear, enjoyable presentation that works well beyond games. Single-player titles benefit from convincing detail and a spacious presentation, while explosions and cinematic effects retain satisfying weight. Music is also more engaging than it is on many gaming headsets, although the H9 II is not automatically the best-sounding option at this price.

Some independent reviews praise its detail, staging, and versatility. Others place planar-driver competitors such as the Audeze Maxwell ahead for raw sound quality. Bass can be prominent depending on the game, EQ preset, and listener preference, so the headset is not a neutral reference monitor.

The “same driver as WH-1000XM6” statement should therefore be treated as a reason to investigate the H9 II, not a guarantee of WH-1000XM6 performance. See Sony’s product specifications and independent coverage from TechRadar, GamesRadar, and PC Gamer.

Competitive gaming and spatial audio

The H9 II is well suited to competitive gaming. Footsteps and other important cues remain clear, and its customizable presentation lets PC users adjust the balance to their preference. However, a wider soundstage is not automatically more accurate: spatial processing can introduce artifacts or make front/back and distance judgments less natural for some players.

Sony’s 360 Spatial Sound for Gaming is configured through INZONE Hub on Windows. Test it both on and off, particularly in competitive shooters. Some players will prefer the stock or custom EQ without spatial processing; others may benefit from the added sense of space. There is no basis for calling the H9 II tournament-superior without controlled comparative testing.

Connection-specific sound

The supplied 2.4GHz connection is the right choice for low-latency gaming. Bluetooth is more useful for music, calls, and secondary-device audio, while the 3.5mm cable provides a wired option. Features can vary by connection, so do not assume that every EQ, spatial, microphone, or control function remains available in every mode.

Microphone quality

The detachable boom uses a cardioid pickup pattern and supports Sony’s AI-assisted noise reduction and Super Wide Band claims. Independent reviews generally consider it one of the H9 II’s stronger features, with clear voice reproduction for chat and calls. Background suppression can still introduce processing artifacts, particularly with constant or complex noise.

The boom is a practical advantage over headphones that rely on a small built-in microphone. Sony describes the microphone features on its product overview. Voice quality should be judged from actual Discord and PS5 party-chat recordings rather than marketing terms such as “pro-level clarity.”

The included microphone is detachable, which is useful when the H9 II is used as a general-purpose Bluetooth headset. Sony lists the microphone, USB-C transceiver, 3.5mm cable, and soft storage pouch in the box; regional bundles should be checked before purchase.

Comfort and design

Comfort is one of the H9 II’s biggest advantages. Sony describes the headset as approximately 260g without the microphone, while some storefront summaries list approximately 273g depending on the measurement or configuration. These figures should not be treated as contradictory until it is clear whether the microphone and other parts are included.

The relatively light design, padded headband, and large earcups make the H9 II well suited to long sessions. Fit remains personal: glasses, head size, clamping pressure, earcup depth, and heat buildup can change the experience. ANC and passive isolation may make a noisy room less tiring, but closed earcups can feel warmer over several hours.

Sony INZONE H9 II Wireless Noise-Canceling Gaming Headset (White) Bundle
  • Pro-Level Gaming Clarity: Developed with Fnatic for competitive play, featuring carbon composite drivers from the Sony WH-1000XM6 for full-spectrum sound and advanced noise canceling in both wired and wireless modes.
  • AI-Optimized Voice Communication: Detachable cardioid boom mic with AI noise reduction and Super Wide Band technology ensures crystal-clear team comms and reduced background noise.
  • Customizable Sound Profiles: Fnatic EQ presets tuned for Valorant and Apex Legends plus full EQ control via INZONE Hub for PC and Sound Connect app for PlayStation 5.
  • Lightweight Comfort For Long Sessions: At just 260g, pressure-balanced design reduces fatigue and hotspots for extended gaming comfort.
  • Dual Connectivity & Long Battery Life: Low-latency 2.4GHz USB-C dongle, Bluetooth and LE Audio pairing, wired support, and up to 30 hours of playtime per charge.

Sony says Fnatic feedback informed the design. That may explain the gaming-focused fit, but collaboration alone does not prove competitive superiority. Try to buy from a retailer with a practical return policy if you are sensitive to clamp or earcup heat.

How good is the ANC?

The H9 II’s active noise cancellation is a meaningful differentiator. It is most useful against continuous low-frequency sound such as air conditioning, fans, and traffic. Passive isolation helps with some higher-frequency noise, but ANC will not completely remove nearby speech, keyboard clicks, sudden sounds, or wind.

Sony says ANC works in both wireless and wired modes. Ambient or transparency mode is useful when you need to hear someone nearby without removing the headset. In a quiet gaming room, however, ANC may provide little practical benefit and may not justify paying more for the H9 II or accepting its shorter battery rating.

Wireless connectivity and platform support

Platform Connection Main features Caveats
PS5 Supplied USB-C 2.4GHz transceiver Game audio, chat, and low-latency wireless Deeper EQ and 360 Spatial Sound customization requires a Windows PC
Windows PC USB-C 2.4GHz transceiver INZONE Hub, EQ, spatial sound, firmware updates, Game/Chat endpoints Windows audio routing must be configured correctly
Phone Bluetooth/LE Audio, or USB-C transceiver where supported Music, calls, and notifications; can run alongside 2.4GHz USB-C compatibility is not guaranteed for every device
Wired devices 3.5mm cable Wired audio with ANC support Feature availability varies by device and connection

On PS5, connect the transceiver and select its appropriate mode if the hardware requires it. Game and chat controls are available through the console and headset, but PC-only software features should not be assumed to exist in the PS5 menus.

On PC, the H9 II appears as separate Game and Chat audio endpoints. Sony’s support documentation warns that selecting INZONE H9 II – Chat as the computer’s general output can disable some sound settings. Use the Game endpoint for game audio and the Chat endpoint for communications where appropriate.

The H9 II can maintain a 2.4GHz game connection while connected to a phone over Bluetooth. This is useful for calls and notifications, but it adds routing complexity and reduces battery life. Sony also warns that not every USB-C phone, console, or accessory is guaranteed to work: see its compatibility guide.

Software and setup

INZONE Hub for Windows provides EQ presets, custom EQ, 360 Spatial Sound for Gaming, device settings, firmware updates, and supported control customization. Sony requires Windows 10 64-bit or later and an internet connection. The support page listed INZONE Hub version 1.0.19.0, released April 15, 2026, and headset firmware 01.001.000, dated December 2, 2025, in the retrieved support information; check Sony’s page for newer versions.

Sony | Sound Connect handles supported mobile and consumer-side settings, but it should not be treated as a complete replacement for every INZONE Hub function unless the current app version specifically supports that function.

A sensible first setup is:

  1. Install or update INZONE Hub.
  2. Update the headset and transceiver firmware.
  3. Set Windows game output to the H9 II Game endpoint.
  4. Configure chat separately.
  5. Compare stock EQ, a custom EQ, and 360 Spatial Sound with the feature disabled.
  6. Pair Bluetooth only if you need secondary-device audio.

Battery life

Sony advertises up to 30 hours. That is a manufacturer maximum, not a universal runtime. ANC, Bluetooth, simultaneous connections, microphone processing, volume, and spatial features all affect endurance. Sony specifically notes that Bluetooth use while gaming on a computer or PS5 can reduce operating time.

Thirty hours is adequate for several sessions, but it is modest beside premium competitors with substantially longer runtimes or hot-swappable batteries. The H9 II’s built-in battery is not designed for user replacement; Sony says a significantly degraded battery may require repair. Sony also recommends charging the headset at least once every six months during long-term storage.

That makes battery endurance the H9 II’s clearest practical weakness. Heavy daily users may prefer the SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro Wireless simply to avoid charging downtime, even if the Sony is lighter and more comfortable.

SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro Wireless

Audeze Maxwell

The Maxwell is aimed at buyers who prioritize planar-magnetic sound and musical detail. It is heavier and lacks the H9 II’s ANC-focused, lightweight convenience. Choose the Sony for comfort and versatility; choose the Audeze when audio fidelity matters more than weight.

See Audeze’s product page for current availability.

Razer BlackShark V3 Pro

The BlackShark V3 Pro is a strong alternative for competitive-gaming buyers who do not need ANC. Its value proposition can be more aggressive, while the H9 II is better suited to gaming, music, calls, and noisy environments.

See Razer’s official listing for current pricing.

Original INZONE H9

The original H9 may be the smarter purchase if it is substantially cheaper. It offers a similar ANC-and-PS5 concept, while the H9 II brings a newer design, updated driver platform, connectivity, microphone, and tuning claims. Compare actual sale prices rather than MSRP alone.

Sony WH-1000XM6

The WH-1000XM6 is the better general-purpose travel and music headphone. The H9 II is the better gaming tool because it adds low-latency 2.4GHz audio, a detachable boom microphone, and game/chat controls. Sony’s shared-driver claim does not make the two products interchangeable.

Common problems and fixes

No audio or delayed audio at startup

  1. Update the headset through INZONE Hub.
  2. Confirm Windows is using the H9 II Game endpoint.
  3. Disconnect and reconnect the USB transceiver.
  4. Restart the PC or PS5.
  5. Reset the headset only if simpler steps fail.

Sony has documented delayed-start audio and related issues associated with outdated firmware. Check its firmware troubleshooting page.

Firmware update fails

Fully charge the headset, close other applications, restart the computer, reconnect the transceiver, and reinstall INZONE Hub if necessary. Sony’s documented recovery process also includes trying an administrator or separate Windows account, then resetting or initializing the headset as a last resort.

For the H9 II, Sony says to connect the headset to AC power and hold Power and Bluetooth together for about five seconds or longer to reset it. Initialization requires the headset to be off and disconnected from USB-C, followed by holding those buttons for about ten seconds or longer. Follow Sony’s current instructions exactly.

The headset will not charge

Check the USB-C connection and power source, whether the computer is awake, and PS5 USB power settings in Rest Mode. Sony recommends charging between 15°C and 35°C (59°F and 95°F). Its charging guide covers additional checks.

Should you buy the Sony INZONE H9 II?

Buy it at $299.99 or less if you want a comfortable PS5/PC headset with ANC, a good boom microphone, Sony-style sound, simultaneous Bluetooth, and straightforward 2.4GHz gaming. At that price, its feature mix is much easier to defend.

At $349.99, buy only if those specific features matter. Otherwise, the Arctis Nova Pro Wireless offers more battery convenience, the Audeze Maxwell may deliver stronger sound quality per dollar, and the BlackShark V3 Pro may be a better competitive-gaming value.

The H9 II is not a bad headset made expensive by branding. It is a genuinely polished, comfortable, capable headset whose premium is simply too large for every buyer. Its best case is a noisy-room PS5 or PC player who values comfort and convenience more than maximum endurance or absolute audio performance.
