In the 2023 market, the Anbernic RG35XX was the standout budget choice, the Retroid Pocket 2S offered the best affordable step up to N64-era systems, the Retroid Pocket 3+ was the strongest midrange all-rounder, and the AYN Odin Pro was the premium pick for more ambitious Android emulation.
This is a historical guide to the 2023 buying landscape, not a claim that every model remains the best purchase in 2026. Several are now older or harder to find, and newer handhelds may offer better value. More importantly, “supports PS2” or “supports GameCube” does not mean that every game runs smoothly. Compatibility varies by title, emulator, settings and thermal performance.

What counts as a retro handheld?
A retro handheld is usually a dedicated portable device built primarily to run older games through emulators. Most use either Linux or Android, although the category also includes FPGA systems such as the Analogue Pocket, which reproduces hardware behavior rather than relying on conventional software emulation.

Windows handheld PCs and the Steam Deck can run retro emulators, but they belong to a different class. They are larger, more expensive and designed for PC software as well as classic games. Likewise, a Nintendo Switch Lite is a mainstream console with licensed first-party software, not a direct substitute for a $60 emulation handheld.
The 2023 picks were judged on price, emulation performance, controls, screen quality, ergonomics, battery expectations, pocketability, storage expansion, software usability, community support and features such as HDMI output. Setup burden and the legal status of bundled games matter just as much as the processor.
Best under $70: Anbernic RG35XX
The original Anbernic RG35XX was the clearest budget recommendation for players focused on classic consoles and handhelds. Its vertical, Game Boy-like design paired a 3.5-inch, 640×480 IPS display with a Linux-based interface, HDMI output and a 2,600mAh battery. The hardware included a quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 CPU, PowerVR SGX544MP GPU and 256MB of DDR3 RAM. BGR’s original 2023 comparison listed a 64GB storage configuration.
Its 4:3 screen was well matched to NES, SNES, Genesis, arcade games, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, GBA and PlayStation 1 software. For those systems, the RG35XX delivered the experience most buyers wanted from an inexpensive retro handheld: simple controls, a compact shape and relatively little reason to think about processor specifications.

What it can and cannot handle
The RG35XX is a strong choice for 8-bit and 16-bit systems and much of the PS1 library. It is not a dependable N64, Dreamcast, PSP, GameCube or PS2 machine. Its lack of analog sticks also makes it a poor match for games designed around dual-stick controls or analog movement.
Its software was another part of the appeal. The official Linux system and community firmware such as GarlicOS were discussed prominently around the device, but firmware projects and compatibility can change. Do not assume that a setup guide written for one firmware version applies unchanged to another.
Why it beat the alternatives
The Miyoo Mini Plus was a credible rival for buyers who valued a similarly compact vertical design, while the TRIMUI Smart targeted an even smaller form factor. The RG35XX’s larger display, HDMI output and broader practical appeal made it the better general recommendation in this tier.
Choose it if you want classic games in a simple package. Skip it if N64, Dreamcast, PSP or newer systems are central to your plans.
Best from $70 to $100: Retroid Pocket 2S
The Retroid Pocket 2S was the major performance step above entry-level Linux handhelds. It used a Unisoc Tiger T610 processor, 3GB or 4GB of LPDDR4x RAM, Android 11 and a 3.5-inch 640×480 display. Other listed features included 32GB or 128GB of eMMC storage, a 4,000mAh battery, 480p HDMI output, Hall-effect analog sticks and analog L2/R2 triggers. The original 2023 specifications and pricing context are documented here.

Those analog controls changed what the device was suited for. The Pocket 2S could handle older systems easily and offered a realistic route into many N64, Dreamcast and PSP games without moving into the $150-plus category. It was not simply a faster RG35XX: it was a more flexible Android handheld with a different setup experience.
The compromise is Android
Android provides more emulator choices, streaming options and access to Android games, but it also adds work. Buyers may need to install applications, organize files, map controls and configure individual emulators. Notifications, background processes and inconsistent app interfaces can make Android feel less focused than a good Linux launcher.
The small 4:3 display suited older games, but it was not ideal for every PSP title. GameCube performance was mixed and should be treated as a bonus rather than the reason to buy the device. “Can run” may mean that a particular game is playable after adjusting resolution, renderer and other settings; it does not promise a flawless library.

Choose the Pocket 2S when analog controls and N64, Dreamcast or PSP capability matter more than a simple out-of-box interface.
Best from $100 to $170: Retroid Pocket 3+
The Retroid Pocket 3+ was the most versatile of the four picks for buyers willing to spend more. Its Unisoc Tiger T618 processor, 4GB of LPDDR4x RAM and Android 11 supported a broad range of emulators. The device had a 4.7-inch, 750×1334 display, 4,500mAh battery, 720p Micro HDMI, USB-C charging and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
The 16:9 screen was particularly useful for PSP games, Android software and streaming. It also made the handheld feel more modern than the square-screen devices below it. The trade-off is presentation: NES, SNES, Genesis, PS1 and many other older systems use a 4:3 image, so they normally appear with unused space at the sides unless the picture is cropped or stretched.
Higher-end emulation with important limits
The Pocket 3+ was strong for classic systems, PS1, N64, Dreamcast and PSP. It could run selected GameCube and PS2 games, but those platforms should be described as variable, not guaranteed. Results depend on the title, emulator version, graphics backend, internal resolution, thermal conditions and configuration.

That distinction matters. A device may boot a PS2 game, run a lightweight title acceptably or require per-game tweaks without being a reliable PS2 replacement. The same qualification applies to GameCube. The Pocket 3+ was a strong midrange all-rounder, not a universal sixth-generation console.
Choose it if you want a larger display and more flexibility than the Pocket 2S. Skip it if you mainly want a tiny classic-console machine or if you expect every PS2 and GameCube game to work smoothly.

Best from $170 to $260: AYN Odin Pro
The AYN Odin Pro was the premium dedicated Android pick in the 2023 comparison. It used a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor and Adreno 630 GPU, with a 5.98-inch 1,920×1,080 IPS display, 6,600mAh battery, Android 10, USB-C charging, Micro HDMI and a 3.5mm audio jack. The original article described multiple memory and storage configurations, so buyers should verify the exact version before comparing listings.
The larger screen, controls and battery made the Odin Pro better suited to demanding emulation than the cheaper picks. It was a reasonable choice for buyers interested in many GameCube and PS2 use cases, while Wii emulation was more experimental and especially dependent on individual games and settings.
Its drawbacks were just as important. The Odin Pro was less pocketable, Android still required configuration, and its premium position was weakened by newer hardware, including the Odin 2 generation that appeared in late 2023. It was not a replacement for every console, and it was not automatically better value than a PC handheld.
Choose it if higher-end Android emulation is the priority and bulk is acceptable. A current buyer should compare its used or legacy-device price with newer Android handhelds and Steam Deck-class products before committing.

Miyoo Mini Plus
The Miyoo Mini Plus was a strong alternative to the RG35XX for buyers who preferred its compact vertical format and software experience. It remains most appropriate for older consoles and handhelds, not demanding 3D systems.
Anbernic RG405M and RG405V
The RG405M and RG405V were relevant midrange alternatives to the Retroid models. Their appeal depended on the buyer’s preferred shape, screen and controls, but they should be compared as distinct products rather than treated as interchangeable with the Pocket 3+.
Analogue Pocket
The Analogue Pocket is a different proposition. It is an FPGA-based system designed around original cartridges, including Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance cartridges with the appropriate support. Analogue’s official information distinguishes it from conventional software emulation and states that it does not play copyrighted ROM files. The official store listed the Pocket at $239.99 during the cited research period, while accessories such as the Dock and Adapter Set cost extra. See the official product listing for current pricing and availability.
It is an excellent fit for someone who owns cartridges and values hardware-style reproduction. It is a poor fit for someone seeking inexpensive ROM-based access to PS1, PS2, GameCube or Wii libraries.
Steam Deck
A Steam Deck-class handheld is the better choice when PC games, desktop software, mods and broad emulation flexibility matter. It is larger and belongs to a different price and ownership category, but it can make more sense than paying premium money for an older Android handheld.

1. Price the complete setup
A listed price may exclude shipping, tax, import fees, a case, screen protector, charger, dock, adapters and a replacement microSD card. Direct-from-manufacturer Chinese handhelds can cost noticeably more after those additions. Always compare the delivered cost in your country and the exact memory or storage configuration.
2. Treat bundled storage cautiously
Included microSD cards may be low quality, poorly organized or loaded with unauthorized software and games. Back up the card before changing anything, and consider replacing it with a reputable card. Preserve separate backups of save files and save states.
3. Understand the setup burden
Depending on the device, setup can involve replacing or configuring firmware, organizing legally obtained game files, adding BIOS files where required, mapping controls, selecting emulator cores, setting aspect ratios and testing sleep, wake and save-state behavior. Exact menus vary by firmware version, so avoid following instructions written for a different model or release.
4. Separate hardware ownership from game rights
Owning a handheld does not automatically provide the right to download games. A seller’s “thousands of games included” claim may refer to a questionable ROM collection, and it does not make the files legitimate. The device, emulator software, game files and BIOS files are separate issues. Use games you have legally obtained or dumped where permitted, and do not treat a preloaded card as a reason by itself to buy.
Which one should you choose?
- For NES, SNES, Genesis, Game Boy, GBA and PS1: the RG35XX was the best value in the 2023 context.
- For an affordable route to N64, Dreamcast and PSP: the Retroid Pocket 2S offered the most meaningful step up.
- For PSP, streaming and a broader all-round experience: the Retroid Pocket 3+ was the strongest midrange choice.
- For higher-end Android emulation: the Odin Pro provided the most headroom of these four, but GameCube, PS2 and Wii results remained title-specific.
- For original cartridges: choose the Analogue Pocket rather than a conventional ROM-focused handheld.
- For PC games and modern software: choose a Steam Deck-class device.
A two-device setup can also be more practical than one expensive compromise: use a small RG35XX-class handheld for instant 8-bit and 16-bit play, and a stronger Android or PC handheld for PSP, GameCube, PS2 and modern games.
What changed after 2023?
The original winners remain useful as a snapshot of what each price tier meant in 2023, but availability and value are not frozen in time. Anbernic now lists separate products including the RG35XX, RG35XX Plus, RG35XX H, RG35XX Pro and RG35XX SP on its current product collection. These are successors or related models, not identical versions of the original RG35XX.
The Retroid Pocket 2S, Pocket 3+ and Odin Pro may be used, discontinued or sold through inconsistent channels, so a current buyer should verify stock, warranty, seller reputation and delivered price. The faithful 2023 ranking is still clear; the best purchase today may be a newer model or a different class of handheld altogether.
