Sony has not announced a PS5 handheld. Bloomberg reported on November 25, 2024, that Sony Interactive Entertainment was in the early stages of developing a portable console capable of playing PlayStation 5 games natively. The project was reportedly years from launch and could still be canceled. No name, specifications, price, release date, or retail decision has been confirmed.
This reported device should not be confused with PlayStation Portal, which streams games from a PS5 or, in limited cases, from Sony’s cloud. Portal does not run PS5 games locally.

What Bloomberg actually reported
Bloomberg said Sony was exploring a portable console intended to play PS5 games “on the move,” potentially giving the company a stronger position against Nintendo’s handheld business. The report cited unnamed people familiar with Sony’s private plans.
The same report said Microsoft was developing handheld-gaming prototypes. It described Sony’s project as being in an early stage, likely years away from release, and subject to cancellation. Sony’s lack of a public confirmation should not be interpreted as either an admission or a denial.

The most accurate description remains: Bloomberg reported that Sony was exploring a PS5 portable, but Sony has not announced a product. (Bloomberg)
Is the reported handheld confirmed?
Only the report itself is confirmed. Bloomberg published an attributed account of an internal project. The following details remain unknown:
- Whether Sony built a working prototype.
- Whether the project passed internal technical or financial reviews.
- Whether it is still active.
- Whether Sony intends to manufacture and sell it.
- Whether it would run existing PS5 games or require separate versions and patches.
As of August 18, 2026, the available evidence supports an unannounced, early-stage project—not a confirmed retail console. Continued investment in PlayStation Portal and cloud streaming also does not prove that a native handheld is coming.

The strongest interpretation of Bloomberg’s report is a handheld that executes at least some PlayStation 5 software locally, without requiring a PS5 or a continuous cloud connection. That would make it fundamentally different from Portal.
However, “plays PS5 games” does not necessarily mean that every PS5 title would run identically to its console version. Sony could require:
- Handheld-specific editions.
- Developer patches.
- Lower resolutions or frame rates.
- Reduced visual settings.
- A curated compatibility list.
- A separate software-development target.
Bloomberg did not disclose a compatibility model, and Sony has not published technical documentation for the rumored hardware.
Three possible designs
- Native handheld: Games run locally on custom, lower-power hardware. This is the interpretation most closely associated with the Bloomberg report.
- More powerful Portal: The device remains primarily a Remote Play and cloud-streaming client. That would improve the streaming experience but would not make it a standalone console.
- Hybrid: Local execution for selected games combined with Remote Play, cloud streaming, and PlayStation account integration. This is technically possible, but it is speculation rather than a reported product detail.

What PlayStation Portal can do now
Sony describes Portal as a Remote Player rather than a portable PlayStation 5. It can stream compatible PS5 and PS4 games installed on a PS5 over Wi-Fi. It includes DualSense-style controls, including haptic feedback and adaptive triggers where supported.
Portal can also cloud-stream a selection of PS5 games from the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog and Classics Catalog. Sony has added support for select digital PS5 games from a user’s PlayStation Store library. The word select matters: cloud availability depends on the game, region, account, service availability, and subscription plan. It does not provide cloud access to every digitally owned PS5 game.

Remote Play requires a PS5 and a PlayStation account paired with the device. Sony lists 5 Mbps as the minimum connection speed and recommends 15 Mbps or higher for a better experience. Cloud streaming requires PlayStation Plus Premium. Ordinary Remote Play does not require PlayStation Plus, although a subscription may be needed for games whose multiplayer access requires it. (Sony’s Portal specifications and FAQ)
Portal is therefore a good fit for playing around the house or using a reliable broadband connection, but it is not an offline PS5 replacement. Network latency, packet loss, congestion, upload performance, public Wi-Fi authentication, and other devices using the network can affect image quality and responsiveness.

Why Sony might want a native handheld
These are strategic possibilities, not confirmed statements of Sony’s business plan:
- More playtime outside the living room: A local handheld could reach people who do not want to occupy a television or buy a second home console.
- Competition with Nintendo: Bloomberg specifically framed the reported project as a possible challenge to Nintendo’s portable-console business.
- Response to PC handhelds: Steam Deck and Windows handhelds have made locally played, console-like portable gaming more familiar, although their software and business models differ from PlayStation’s.
- More software sales: A native device could create another platform for PlayStation Store purchases.
- A broader PlayStation ecosystem: Portal and cloud streaming already extend access beyond the PS5. Sony’s investor materials describe cloud streaming as part of its effort to let users play away from the console. (Sony investor presentation)
- Competitive pressure from Microsoft: Bloomberg also reported that Microsoft was working on handheld prototypes.
The technical challenge of a portable PS5
Performance per watt
The PS5 is designed around substantially more power, cooling, and physical space than a battery-powered handheld can ordinarily provide. A portable device would have to balance CPU and GPU performance against battery life, heat, fan noise, weight, cost, memory bandwidth, storage speed, and screen resolution.
Matching the PS5’s output exactly could make the device expensive, hot, heavy, or short-lived between charges. A lower-power design would likely require developers to optimize games separately.

Software compatibility
Existing PS5 games may not automatically run correctly on handheld hardware. Sony might need a certification program, compatibility database, developer patches, separate handheld builds, or different performance modes. Cross-save, cross-buy, and upgrade policies would also shape whether the device feels like an extension of the PS5 or a separate platform.
Storage
Modern PS5 games can consume substantial storage. A native handheld could need a large internal SSD, expandable storage, better download management, smaller handheld-specific installs, or cloud streaming as a supplement. No storage specifications have been reported.
Battery and connectivity
Local execution would reduce the device’s dependence on an internet connection, one of the main limitations of Portal. Online features, patches, digital authentication, and cloud saves could still require connectivity. The better Sony pushes performance, however, the greater the likely battery and thermal demands.

Would it play every PS5 game?
There is no verified answer. The possibilities are:
- Every PS5 game natively: Not established.
- A selection of PS5 games: Plausible, but unconfirmed.
- Handheld-specific versions: Possible, but unreported.
- Cloud-streamed PS5 games: Already available in limited form through Portal, subject to PlayStation Plus Premium and catalog restrictions.
Any claim that the rumored device will play “all PS5 games” goes beyond the evidence.
Price, release date, and specifications
Every concrete hardware detail is currently unknown:
- Name: Unknown.
- Release date or launch year: Unknown.
- Price: Unknown.
- Processor and graphics hardware: Unknown.
- Display: Unknown.
- Battery capacity and life: Unknown.
- Storage and expansion: Unknown.

- Game compatibility: Unknown.
- Retail status: Unconfirmed.
The only timing information in the Bloomberg report was that the device was likely years away as of November 2024. That does not support a specific 2025, 2026, or 2027 launch date. Bloomberg also reported that Sony could cancel the project before release.
Should you buy Portal or another handheld?
Buy Portal now if:
- You already own a PS5.
- You mainly want to play around the house.
- You value a simple PlayStation interface and DualSense-style controls.
- Your Wi-Fi and broadband connection are dependable.
- You are satisfied with Remote Play and limited cloud streaming.
Do not buy Portal expecting offline native PS5 gaming, universal cloud access to your library, reliable play on poor public Wi-Fi, PC applications, mods, or broad storefront access.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

A Steam Deck, ROG Ally or Ally X, or Lenovo Legion Go is a better fit if you want local PC gaming today, access to multiple storefronts, mods, or non-gaming applications. The trade-off is a less console-like experience, variable game compatibility, and potentially more setup and troubleshooting. These devices are not native PlayStation handhelds.
Wait only if native PlayStation gaming is your priority
Waiting makes sense if you specifically want a first-party Sony device that can run PlayStation games locally and you are comfortable waiting indefinitely. It does not make sense to delay a purchase merely because a rumored product might arrive: there is no confirmed release window, price, feature list, or guarantee that the project survived development.
Nintendo Switch 2 is another current handheld option, but it serves Nintendo’s software ecosystem and is not a substitute for portable access to the PlayStation library.
Bottom line
Bloomberg’s report is credible enough to establish that Sony was exploring a PS5-capable portable in late 2024. It is not strong enough to establish that Sony has announced, finalized, or will release the device. Portal remains a streaming accessory, not the rumored native handheld. For portable PlayStation gaming today, Portal suits PS5 owners who accept streaming; PC handhelds offer local gaming with different trade-offs; and waiting is justified only if native PlayStation hardware matters more than having a device now.
