Jim Ryan’s successor as head of Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE), the company behind PlayStation, is Hideaki Nishino. Sony’s leadership structure changed in stages: Nishino and Hermen Hulst led separate platform and studio groups from June 2024, then Nishino became SIE president and CEO on April 1, 2025. Hulst remained in charge of the Studio Business Group, reporting to Nishino.
Who replaced Jim Ryan as PlayStation CEO?
Ryan announced his planned retirement in September 2023, saying he would leave SIE in March 2024 after almost 30 years with the PlayStation business. Sony named Hiroki Totoki interim SIE CEO effective April 1, 2024. Sony’s announcement of Ryan’s retirement and the interim transition set out that first step.
Totoki’s interim appointment was followed by a split of SIE’s platform and studio leadership in June 2024. That arrangement did not make Nishino and Hulst equal co-CEOs of all SIE: each led a distinct business group under SIE chairman Totoki. Sony later appointed Nishino SIE president and CEO, effective April 1, 2025.

The later roles above reflect Sony Group’s executive roster dated July 1, 2026; it is a snapshot, not confirmation of changes after that date.

What Nishino and Hulst lead
Hideaki Nishino: SIE-wide leadership
When Nishino took charge of the Platform Business Group in June 2024, his remit included technology, products, services, platform experience, relationships with third-party publishers and developers, and commercial operations. Since April 1, 2025, he has led SIE as its president and CEO. Sony’s January 2025 announcement described the change as an evolution of the 2024 structure.
Hermen Hulst: PlayStation’s studio business
Hulst leads SIE’s Studio Business Group, responsible for first-party content development, publishing, and business operations. He continued in that role after Nishino became SIE CEO and reports to Nishino; Sony’s July 1, 2026 roster lists him as CEO of the Studio Business Group.

Why Sony divided leadership in 2024
Sony said the group leaders would have clear responsibilities, collaborate, strengthen their core businesses, and pursue synergies. Its stated aim was to deepen engagement with existing PlayStation users and expand experiences to new audiences—not a reported outcome of the appointments.
In Sony’s FY2023 earnings Q&A, Totoki said the company selected Nishino and Hulst because they knew the platform and studio businesses, respectively. Sony framed the two-leader arrangement as a response to SIE’s expansion and PlayStation Studios’ larger role in its business strategy, and expressed the hope that it would enable more granular and timely decisions. What the succession does—and does not—establish
The appointments clarify who was responsible for platform and studio operations, and who leads SIE now according to Sony’s latest roster included here. They do not, on their own, show that the changes caused a shift in product plans, studio output, or financial performance. Those effects are not established by the cited announcements and roster.
