Sony has patented a sensor-based game controller concept that could detect touches, taps, swipes, presses and other interactions without relying entirely on conventional physical buttons. That makes it relevant to PS6 speculation—but it does not confirm a PS6 controller, a commercial product or even a specifically capacitive design.

The filing describes flexible, potentially repositionable controls and several types of sensing. The most accurate description is a touch-sensitive or sensor-based controller concept, not a confirmed “PS6 controller with capacitive buttons.”

What Sony patented

The relevant filing is US20240269548A1, “Devices and methods for a game controller”. It lists Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC as the assignee and Sean Whitcomb as the listed inventor. The application was filed on February 13, 2023, published on August 15, 2024, and later granted as U.S. Patent US12533573B2 on January 27, 2026.

The patent describes controller surfaces containing sensors that can recognize inputs including touch, tapping, swiping, sliding, pressing, pinching and joystick-like movements. Those surfaces could provide functions normally handled by face buttons or a D-pad.

  • Feel physically responsive feedback to your in-game actions through haptic feedback
  • Experience varying levels of force and tension at your fingertips with adaptive triggers
  • Chat online through the built-in microphone and connect a headset directly through the 3.5mm jack
  • Switch voice capture on and off using the dedicated mute button
  • Play on more devices using the USB Type-C cable or Bluetooth to connect easily to Windows PC and Mac computers, Android and iOS mobile phones as well as your PlayStation 5

Importantly, the design does not require every physical control to disappear. The patent allows sensor-based controls to work independently of physical buttons or alongside them. A future product could therefore be fully buttonless, partly sensor-based or a hybrid controller retaining physical sticks, triggers and conventional buttons.

Are these definitely capacitive buttons?

No. A capacitive control detects changes in an electrical field caused by a finger or another conductive object. It can register contact with little or no mechanical travel, but the patent does not establish capacitive sensing as Sony’s confirmed or exclusive implementation.

The filing discusses a broader selection of sensor technologies, including touch surfaces, optical sensing, pressure sensing and temperature sensing. It also mentions detecting characteristics such as finger size, fingerprints, grip type and applied pressure. Calling the concept “capacitive” is therefore an interpretation, not a specification Sony has publicly committed to.

Controls could move around the surface

One of the filing’s more ambitious ideas is a controller whose input locations can be changed. Possible configurations include:

Playstation 5 DualSense Wireless Controller - White (Renewed)
  • Haptic feedback - Feel physically responsive feedback to your in-game actions with dual actuators which replace traditional rumble motors. In your hands, these dynamic vibrations can simulate the feeling of everything from environments to the recoil of different weapons. .Operating temperature : 41 °F to 95 °F (5 °C to 35 °C)
  • Adaptive triggers - Experience varying levels of force and tension as you interact with your in-game gear and environments. From pulling back an increasingly tight bowstring to hitting the brakes on a speeding car, feel physically connected to your on-screen actions.
  • Built-in microphone and headset jack - Chat with friends online using the built-in microphone or by connecting a headset to the 3.5mm jack. Easily switch voice capture on and off at a moment’s notice with the dedicated mute button. Internet and account for PlayStation Network required.
  • DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
  • PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
  • Moving face-button functions to different areas
  • Repositioning the D-pad
  • Changing the spacing between controls
  • Inverting the layout for the opposite hand
  • Adapting the arrangement to a player’s hand or finger size

This goes beyond ordinary button remapping. Remapping changes what an existing button does; Sony’s concept could change where the input is physically or perceptually located on the controller.

Players would need some way to find those controls without constantly looking down. The patent discusses illuminated reference points, touchscreen graphics, haptic cues, raised or deformable elements and other tactile or visual indicators. These could identify the active layout or help players learn it through repeated use.

Does the patent confirm a PS6 controller?

No. The filing does not mention “PS6,” name a final product or provide a release date. It also does not show that Sony is manufacturing the design or that it will be included with the company’s next console.

The patent uses PlayStation-style examples such as Square, X, Triangle, the D-pad, Home and Menu controls, so a PlayStation application is plausible. But a patent is evidence that Sony explored and sought protection for an invention—not evidence that the invention will ship.

Rank #3
PlayStation DualSense Edge Wireless Controller - Midnight Black
  • Ultra Customizable Controls
  • Mappable Back Buttons
  • DualSense Wireless Controller Features Built In
  • Replaceable Stick Modules and Caps

The application’s February 2023 filing date also matters. It predates much of the current PS6 speculation, so there is no basis for treating it as a newly announced PS6 specification. Sony has not confirmed that this concept will replace the DualSense or appear on a future console.

How it differs from the DualSense

Sony’s current DualSense Wireless Controller combines fixed physical face buttons and a D-pad with a touchpad, motion sensing, haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. It is compatible with PS5, PC, Mac and mobile devices according to Sony’s product information.

Current DualSense Patent concept
Fixed physical face buttons Sensor-defined input areas
Fixed D-pad location Potentially repositionable directional controls
Mechanical travel and click Touch, tap, swipe or pressure detection
Printed symbols and fixed layout Possible illuminated or software-defined references
Standardized controls User-specific layouts and spacing

The patent could complement rather than replace DualSense features. Haptics, adaptive triggers and physical sticks could remain in a hybrid design while sensor surfaces add configurable face controls.

Why the idea could matter for accessibility

Repositionable input areas could help players with different hand sizes, reach limitations or preferred grips. A player might spread controls farther apart, move them closer, invert the layout or create a configuration that works with one hand or an unusual grip.

This direction would also fit with Sony’s existing accessibility work. The PlayStation Access controller already offers swappable button and stick caps, configurable buttons, up to 30 profiles, three profiles stored on the controller, four 3.5mm expansion ports and the ability to work with a DualSense or DualSense Edge. The patented concept is different—it concerns sensor-defined controls rather than a customizable physical accessibility kit—but the goals overlap.

The practical problems Sony would need to solve

Tactile certainty

Mechanical buttons give players an edge, travel distance and click. A flat sensor surface could be difficult to use by feel. Haptic feedback, raised markers, deformable surfaces or other physical references would be essential for fast play.

Accidental touches

Players often rest their thumbs on a face button. A touch-sensitive surface would need to distinguish resting contact from an intentional command, perhaps through pressure thresholds, timing, palm rejection or a combination of sensors.

Moisture, gloves and inconsistent input

Sweat, wet fingers and gloves can affect touch detection. A finished controller would need reliable calibration and clear rules for interpreting taps, presses, swipes and sustained contact. The patent’s mention of multiple sensor types suggests possible ways to improve detection, but it does not prove those problems have been solved.

  • Multi-device connectivity, connect using a USB Type-C cable or Bluetooth technology and easily play on more devices

Software support

The concept would be more useful if games could supply layouts, labels, haptic cues and control profiles. Without developer support, a sensor surface might function mainly as a novel gamepad layer rather than a genuinely dynamic interface. The cited materials disclose no commitment regarding PS5 compatibility, existing-game support or developer tools.

Durability and repair

Removing mechanical buttons could reduce some forms of wear, but it would move risk elsewhere. A damaged integrated sensor layer, display or surface could be more expensive to replace than an individual mechanical button. A buttonless design is not automatically more durable or easier to repair.

Other Sony controller patents

Separate coverage has described a Sony controller concept involving a touchscreen-like surface where users could choose the locations of the D-pad, analog sticks and action buttons. Another 2026 filing reportedly explores a modular controller with a detachable touchscreen, rotating dial and movable components. These filings indicate that Sony is investigating alternative interfaces, but they should not be merged with the sensor-surface patent or treated as confirmation of PS6 hardware.

What the patent means for PS6 speculation

The filing is credible evidence that Sony has explored controller interfaces beyond fixed mechanical buttons. It supports speculation that a future PlayStation controller could offer more customization, alternative sensing or accessibility-focused layouts.

It does not establish that the PS6 will use capacitive face buttons, that the controller will be completely buttonless, that the DualSense is being replaced or that a new controller has a confirmed launch window. Until Sony announces hardware, the responsible conclusion is that this is a protected concept—not a PS6 product reveal.
