If a Sony remaster on PC stutters or crashes after you enable DLSS 5, do not assume the remaster has a universal DLSS 5 bug. DLSS 5 support and rollout are game-specific, and the unnamed remaster, patch, GPU, driver and Windows build determine the correct fix. Start by updating the game and platform, let shader compilation finish, then disable Frame Generation before testing DLSS or TSR. If the problem remains, rebuild the graphics-driver and shader state, remove extra display and overlay variables, verify the game files, and collect exact crash details for support.
What the symptom usually means
“DLSS 5 stuttering” can describe several different failures that need different responses. A brief hitch while a game creates its first shader cache is not the same as repeated traversal stutter after the cache exists. A crash that occurs only when Frame Generation is enabled points to a different configuration branch than a crash that occurs with every upscaler disabled.

The available evidence does not establish a single Sony-remaster DLSS 5 defect or a failure-rate statistic. NVIDIA’s March 16, 2026 DLSS 5 announcement lists individual supported games, including The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, rather than promising support for every Sony PC remaster. NVIDIA’s October 13, 2026 update likewise gives per-game rollout dates for Hogwarts Legacy and Where Winds Meet. Check the exact game’s patch notes and graphics menu before treating DLSS 5 as a supported feature.

Identify the exact failure before changing settings
First-run shader compilation
During shader compilation, the game translates shader code into machine code that your GPU can execute. That work can temporarily consume CPU, storage and driver resources, producing long pauses or uneven frame pacing. NVIDIA’s technical explanation identifies shader translation as a source of runtime hitches. Square Enix support documents a compile process that can take 35 to 90 minutes, depending on PC specifications, and says stuttering should resolve once the cache has been created.

Do not judge the final performance of a fresh installation while compilation is still progressing. Let the in-game process reach completion, use the game’s title-screen return instruction if it provides one, and then test the same route again.
Persistent traversal or frame-pacing stutter
If the game continues to hitch in the same areas after shader compilation has completed, compare a repeatable route rather than a one-off camera turn. Note whether the hitch appears while entering a new area, during combat, when rotating the camera, or at a fixed interval. A repeatable pattern after the cache exists is evidence for a continuing configuration, driver or game issue rather than ordinary first-run compilation.
Crashes or black screens tied to Frame Generation
If the game is stable with Frame Generation off and fails as soon as it is enabled, use the documented rollback sequence: disable Frame Generation first, then test DLSS or TSR as the super-resolution mode. This isolates the frame-generation path without immediately removing all upscaling. It is a diagnostic step, not proof that DLSS 5 is defective in every title.
Crashes with every upscaler disabled
A crash that also occurs with DLSS, TSR and Frame Generation off is not isolated to the DLSS 5 path. Prioritize current Windows and driver updates, a clean graphics-driver installation, file verification and a minimal software environment. Capture the crash code and reproduce the failure with the simplest graphics configuration you can establish.
Patch the platform before troubleshooting graphics
Out-of-date software can make every later test misleading. PlayStation’s PC guidance recommends current Windows updates, GPU, audio and chipset drivers, and the latest game update. It also calls out connectivity checks and reinstalling when necessary. Santa Monica Studio advises keeping the game online so patches can arrive and verifying Steam file integrity.
- Install all pending Windows updates and restart the PC.
- Update the GPU driver, then update audio and chipset drivers from the appropriate hardware manufacturer or system vendor.
- Open the game’s launcher and install its latest patch. Confirm the installed build number if the launcher displays it.
- Keep the game online while launching it so any required content or patch can be delivered.
- If the installation is incomplete or repeatedly fails its file check, plan a reinstall only after preserving settings and save data according to the game’s support instructions.
Do not compare performance before and after an update while changing several graphics options at the same time. Record the patch and driver versions for every test.

Step-by-step troubleshooting workflow
1. Record a baseline you can reproduce
Write down the exact remaster and edition, game build, GPU model, current GPU-driver version, Windows build, display setup, DLSS or TSR mode, Frame Generation state and any crash code. Note whether the problem is a hitch, a full freeze, a desktop crash, a black screen or a restart. Use one repeatable location or sequence in the game, and change only one variable per test.
This information matters because “Sony remaster” is not a single technical target. Different games can receive different DLSS 5 components and different patches, so a fix for one title cannot be assumed for another.
2. Confirm that the feature is available for this game
Check the game’s own graphics menu and current patch notes. DLSS 5 is not a universal switch; NVIDIA’s 2026 announcements describe support and rollout on a per-game basis. After compilation, close and relaunch the game if the title requests it. Re-run the exact route used for your baseline. If the stutter is gone, it was consistent with first-run shader creation. If it remains, continue rather than repeatedly deleting or rebuilding the cache without a reason.
4. Roll back Frame Generation before removing upscaling

Run at least one repeatable test with Frame Generation off and one with it on, keeping resolution, quality preset and route unchanged. If only the enabled test fails, report that precise relationship. If both tests fail, move to the driver, file and environment steps instead of repeatedly toggling the same option.
5. Rebuild the graphics-driver and shader state
If the issue began after a GPU-driver or game update, perform a clean GPU-driver installation. The clean install removes stale driver state; after it completes, allow the game to rebuild its shaders rather than judging the first launch immediately. 505 Games explicitly recommends this procedure for crash and black-screen cases, while NVIDIA’s technical analysis explains why shader translation can create runtime hitches.
Do not combine the clean install with an unrecorded collection of other changes. Keep the same game patch and test route, then compare Frame Generation off and on only after the new shader state has been created.
6. Remove extra configuration variables
PlayStation advises disabling SLI or dual monitors while diagnosing PC-game problems. Temporarily test with one display and a single-GPU configuration where applicable. Close overlays, recording tools and other performance-monitoring software for the test session. The cited guidance supports reducing concurrent software; it does not establish that one particular overlay is a universal cause of Sony-remaster crashes.
Once the game is stable, re-enable one removed component at a time. If the failure returns, you have a useful reproduction detail. If it does not, leave the configuration unchanged while you complete the remaining checks.
7. Verify the game files
Use the launcher’s built-in file verification in Steam or Epic. Allow the process to repair or redownload files, then install any pending game update and restart the launcher. Verification is worthwhile when files are missing or corrupted, but a successful check does not prove that DLSS 5 is supported by the title, that the driver is clean, or that a frame-generation path is stable. Treat it as one branch of the diagnosis.
8. Capture a support-quality report
Before contacting the game’s support channel, record the exact remaster, edition, patch, GPU, driver, Windows build, monitor arrangement, SLI status, DLSS or TSR mode, Frame Generation state, shader-compilation status and crash code. Include which of the following tests changed the result:
- Frame Generation off with DLSS enabled.
- TSR instead of DLSS.
- All upscalers disabled.
- After a clean driver installation and shader rebuild.
- After file verification.
- With one monitor, no SLI and overlays or recorders closed.
That matrix gives support a reproducible condition instead of the broad statement “DLSS 5 crashes.” Use an in-game crash-report option when the title provides one.

The problem disappears after compilation
Treat the initial hitch as shader-cache creation. Future driver changes, game patches or clean installations can trigger another compilation pass, so allow that pass to finish before comparing frame pacing again. The 35-to-90-minute figure is a documented possibility for some systems, not a guaranteed duration for every remaster.
Only Frame Generation causes the failure
Keep Frame Generation disabled while you play and use DLSS or TSR if that configuration is stable. Report the exact title and patch, because support is title-specific. Do not generalize the result to every DLSS 5 implementation.

This pattern still leaves several possibilities: a driver state problem, a title patch issue or an interaction with the selected rendering path. Complete the clean-driver and shader rebuild steps, verify files and test again before deciding which component is responsible.

The game fails even with all upscalers off
Focus on the base game and system environment: current Windows, GPU, audio and chipset drivers; file verification; one display; no SLI; and closed overlays or recorders. Include the crash code and a minimal-configuration reproduction in the support report.
The issue returns after every update
Record whether the update was for Windows, the GPU driver or the game. A new build can invalidate shaders or change feature support, so repeat the compilation and clean-driver checks only when the corresponding update occurred.
