It is thinner and lighter than the original Vita, adds 1 GB of internal memory, switches to micro-USB charging and carries a higher battery-life estimate from Sony. Its defining compromise is the 5-inch LCD in place of the original PCH-1000’s OLED. Which model is better depends chiefly on whether you value the Slim’s convenience or prefer the OLED screen.
What changed in the PS Vita Slim?
Sony announced the PCH-2000 series on September 9, 2013. The redesign keeps the Vita’s core format and 5-inch, 960 × 544 resolution while revising its weight, thickness, display technology, storage and charging port. Sony described it as 20% slimmer and 15% lighter than the original model. Those are launch-era manufacturer comparisons, not independent measurements.
| Feature | PS Vita Slim (PCH-2000) | Original PS Vita (PCH-1000 family) |
|---|---|---|
| Display | 5-inch, 960 × 544 LCD | 5-inch, 960 × 544 OLED |
| Weight | About 219 g | About 260 g for PCH-1001; about 279 g for PCH-1101 |
| Dimensions | 183.6 × 85.1 × 15.0 mm (Sony specification) | About 182 × 84 × 18.6 mm |
| Built-in memory | 1 GB nominal; some space is reserved for system use | No internal memory card, according to the cited original-model manual |
| Charging connection | Micro-USB Type B | Multi-use proprietary port, according to the cited original-model manual |
| Sony launch battery estimate | About 4–6 hours of gameplay; about 7 hours of video | About 3–5 hours of gameplay; about 5 hours of video |
Specifications and launch estimates are from Sony’s September 9, 2013 PCH-2000 announcement, its PCH-2000 user guide, and the original-model PS Vita manual cited for PCH-1001/PCH-1101. Sony’s original-model manual lists the OLED display and model-specific weights.
Is the PS Vita Slim better than the OLED Vita?
There is no universal winner: the panel choice is the central tradeoff. The Slim has an LCD; the PCH-1000 has an OLED panel. Both are 5 inches at 960 × 544. The cited specifications establish the difference in panel type, but not which looks better in a side-by-side comparison. Treat this as a preference decision rather than assuming the LCD is equivalent to, or worse than, OLED in every viewing situation.

Choose the Slim if portability and convenience come first
At about 219 g and 15 mm thick, the PCH-2000 is lighter and thinner than the cited original models. Its micro-USB Type B port also uses a more common cable type than the original’s proprietary multi-use port. Those changes make the Slim the practical choice if you want the lighter design and easier cable replacement.
Choose the original if you specifically want OLED
The PCH-1000’s OLED screen is the clearest reason to prefer it. Its larger listed weight—about 260 g for PCH-1001 and 279 g for PCH-1101—also means you should check the exact model when comparing listings; the 3G-capable PCH-1101 is heavier than PCH-1001.

How much better is the Slim’s battery life?
Sony estimated about 4 to 6 hours of gameplay and about 7 hours of video playback for the PCH-2000 when it launched in 2013. Sony’s estimates for the then-current original Vita were about 3 to 5 hours of gameplay and 5 hours of video; its 2012 FAQ also listed about 9 hours of music playback for the original. Sony noted that game intensity, screen brightness and wireless use affect runtime. These are historical design estimates, not a forecast for a used console today. Battery age and condition vary by unit, so ask about observed battery behavior or assess the specific console before buying.
Does the PS Vita Slim need a memory card?
Not for every use. The PCH-2000 has 1 GB of internal memory, but the user-available amount is lower because some space is reserved for system use. Sony cautions that some titles or features require a separately sold PS Vita memory card. Its user guide says the proprietary card can store downloaded games, saves, add-on data, photos, music and other content. Whether you need one depends on the games and content you plan to use; check those requirements before buying a card.

What should you check before buying a used PCH-2000?
Official specifications describe a new console, not the condition of an individual secondhand unit. Inspect the listing and, if possible, the console itself for working controls, screen and ports; ask how the battery behaves and confirm which accessories are included.

Does the Vita’s Store still matter?
Yes, especially if you expect to buy digital games on the console. Sony’s user guide says PlayStation Store no longer sells products such as games, in-game content and videos for PS Vita. Sony’s US support notice says the on-device PS3 and Vita Store closure in that region will start in July 2027. It says that after closure users cannot buy new games, add-ons or other content through the device, while already-owned content remains playable subject to each game’s online features and service availability; previously purchased content remains downloadable “for the foreseeable future.” This timing is specific to Sony’s US support notice and should not be assumed to apply identically in every country.
For a used Vita, consider how you will access games: content already associated with your account, physical PS Vita Cards and the continued availability of online features for individual titles. Local stock of used games is not established by Sony’s documentation.

Verdict
The PS Vita Slim is the more portable and convenient revision, with micro-USB, limited built-in memory and better launch-era battery estimates. The original Vita remains the obvious alternative for players who prioritize its OLED panel. Because both are now commonly encountered as used hardware, the condition of the specific console and your route to the games you want matter as much as the model-level differences.
