A report describes internal changes to a revised PS5 Slim, but the evidence does not show that every new console has them. Separately, Sony says it has secured memory for its projected FY2026 PS5 sales and has planned around a market view of elevated memory prices and tight supply through 2027. Neither statement proves that consumer RAM prices cannot fall or that PS5 prices will rise.
Did Sony secretly update the PS5 Slim?
TechSpot reported on October 4, 2026, that a revised PS5 Slim motherboard changes cooling, some components and repair-related design details. These are reported teardown findings, not a hardware announcement from Sony. TechSpot’s report also cautions that more examples are needed to establish whether the revision is used across newly produced PS5 Slim consoles or only in selected production runs and bundles.
That distinction matters if you are comparing listings or considering a repair. A generic “PS5 Slim” label does not identify the motherboard inside a particular unit. Check the exact model or SKU, region, disc or digital configuration, included storage and accessories, price, seller and warranty. Treat a claimed board revision as unverified unless the specific unit is documented; the available reporting does not establish universal rollout or exact replacement-part compatibility.
What has Sony said about memory supply and prices?
Memory secured for projected FY2026 PS5 sales
In its FY2026 Q1 investor presentation dated July 31, 2026, Sony said it had “secured the quantity of memory necessary to meet our projected sales volume for FY26.” It also said its plan for PS5 hardware profitability in FY26 remained similar to FY25. Sony’s investor presentation describes company procurement and profitability planning—not a retail-price forecast or a promise that console prices will stay unchanged.

The through-2027 outlook was a planning assumption
At its May 8, 2026 FY2025 Q4 investor Q&A, Sony described the “prevailing view” as memory prices remaining elevated and supply-demand conditions staying tight through 2027. The company said it had secured the memory volumes needed for 2026 and would balance hardware pricing and promotional spending in response to future price changes. Sony’s Q&A materials record an assumption and response at that time, not a guarantee that prices will follow that path.
In February 2026, CFO Lin Tao told GameSpot that Sony could secure the minimum memory quantity needed for the October-to-December 2026 year-end selling season and would keep negotiating with suppliers. GameSpot noted Sony did not give a yes-or-no answer on another console price increase. That earlier comment is less current than Sony’s July 2026 supply update. GameSpot’s report provides context, but neither statement settles future PS5 retail pricing.

Does this mean RAM will not get cheaper—or that the PS5 will cost more?
No. Sony’s memory planning concerns components for PS5 production and its projected console sales, not all consumer RAM markets or retail memory products. The May 2026 outlook was qualitative; Sony did not provide a numeric forecast that establishes when or by how much memory prices might change. Supply secured for a sales plan likewise does not determine what a retailer will charge for a PS5.
Push Square reported on July 31, 2026, that Sony had procured memory for projected PS5 sales through March 31, 2027. Its interpretation that the unchanged profitability plan suggested no near-term price increase is the publication’s analysis, not a guarantee from Sony. Read Push Square’s coverage as commentary on the company’s statement rather than as a confirmed pricing commitment.

Why the headline needs qualification
The phrase “RAM won’t get cheaper” is stronger than Sony’s actual wording: the company described a prevailing market view and its own planning, not a certainty about all memory prices. The PS5 Slim revision is also reported by a secondary outlet, with rollout scope still unclear. The headline appeared in an ixbt.games roundup published October 6 and labeled as its most interesting news for October 5; that framing is not independent confirmation of either claim. See the ixbt.games roundup.
For buyers, compare the actual console listing and warranty rather than assuming a specific internal revision from the product name. For anyone following memory prices, keep consumer RAM markets, Sony’s console-specific procurement and PS5 retail pricing separate: the available statements do not make them interchangeable.
