Sony announced a smaller PS5 model on October 10, 2023, in two 1TB configurations: one with an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive included and a Digital Edition designed to accept that drive later. The add-on was sold separately, so buyers choosing digital at first could add disc support without replacing the console—but the drive is specific to the newer model.
What Sony announced
Sony described the console as a new, smaller PS5 model; “PS5 Slim” is the common shorthand. Both configurations have a 1TB SSD and the same technology features, according to Sony. The Digital Edition is not presented as a lower-performance gaming model: the announcement lists shared specifications including the CPU and GPU, 4K at 120Hz and 8K TV support, and variable refresh rate (VRR). These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results.
Sony said the new model has more than 30% less volume than the earlier models. Compared with their respective predecessors, the drive-equipped version is 18% lighter and the Digital Edition is 24% lighter. Sony listed approximate dimensions, excluding projecting parts, as follows:
| Configuration | Disc drive included? | Storage | Approximate dimensions and weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive | Yes | 1TB SSD | 358 × 96 × 216 mm; 3.2 kg |
| PS5 Digital Edition | No; it has a port for the separately sold drive | 1TB SSD | 358 × 80 × 216 mm; 2.6 kg |
Dimensions, weight, storage, and the shared specifications above come from Sony’s October 10, 2023 announcement: Sony’s announcement of the smaller PS5 model.

Can you add a disc drive to the PS5 Digital Edition?
Yes, for the newer Digital Edition Sony announced in October 2023. Its attachable Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive is sold separately and can be added later. Sony’s Sid Shuman, Senior Director of Content Communications, said buyers could add the drive later; his announcement quoted launch-era prices of 79.99 USD, 119.99 EUR, 99.99 GBP, and 11,980 JPY. Those figures are historical announcement prices, not confirmation of what the accessory costs or whether it is currently available.
Do not assume that the drive fits an older PS5 Digital Edition. Sony’s announcement describes compatibility with the new model’s drive port and does not establish compatibility with earlier consoles. Confirm the exact console model and the current drive listing’s compatibility before buying.
Which configuration makes more sense?
The choice comes down to whether you want disc support immediately, or prefer to start with a digital-only console and keep the option to add it.
| Consideration | Drive-equipped PS5 | PS5 Digital Edition plus optional drive |
|---|---|---|
| Drive at purchase | Included | Not included; the announced newer model can accept the separately sold drive |
| Original U.S. recommended launch price | $499.99 | $449.99 for the console; Sony separately announced the drive at $79.99 |
| Disc use | Supports physical PS5 and PS4 games and Ultra HD Blu-ray media, subject to the relevant disc and console requirements | Disc use requires buying and attaching the compatible drive |
| Convenience | Ready for disc use out of the box | Lower initial console price, with a separate purchase and installation if you later want disc support |
The U.S. prices are Sony’s recommended launch prices announced in 2023, not current offers. The $50 difference between the consoles was smaller than the separately announced $79.99 drive price; buying the Digital Edition and drive at those historical figures would total $529.98 before tax. That comparison is useful for understanding the original choice, not for estimating today’s prices.

When did the smaller PS5 model launch?
Sony’s October 2023 announcement said the models would begin rolling out in the United States in November 2023, followed by a global rollout over the subsequent months. That launch schedule does not establish current stock or availability in any particular country. The announcement also identified a vertical stand compatible with all PS5 models, sold separately; it is distinct from the model-specific attachable disc drive.

In an announcement dated July 1, 2026, Sony said production of physical game discs for new games releasing on PlayStation consoles is scheduled to end starting in January 2028, with new games available in digital formats. Sony said this change does not affect games already released or scheduled before January 2028 in disc format. The announcement does not say that the PS5 disc drive will stop working, that existing discs will become unavailable, or how every future game edition or other kind of physical media will be handled.
