The “65 million” PS5 milestone belongs to 2024, not today: Sony Interactive Entertainment reported more than 95 million PS5 hardware units sold worldwide on a sell-in basis as of June 30, 2026. In November 2024, Sony management described single-player games as a strength and said major releases were planned every year from FY2025 onward—but its strategy paired them with live-service games rather than replacing one with the other.
What Sony said about single-player games
In Sony Group Corporation’s November 8, 2024 earnings transcript, management described its goal as an “optimal title portfolio” combining single-player and live-service games. The transcript said single-player games were a company strength and that proven intellectual property made their hit potential more predictable. Live-service games, by contrast, were presented as a way to pursue greater upside while accepting some risk at launch.
That is a portfolio-balance argument, not an announcement that Sony was abandoning live service. The distinction matters: Sony characterized the two categories as having different risk and reward profiles, and said it intended to use both.
What “return” means—and what it does not
The headline’s “return” is best read as a signal of renewed emphasis on Sony’s established single-player strengths, not a formal policy reversal. In the same November 2024 transcript, Sony said it planned to keep releasing major single-player titles every year from FY2025 onward, starting with Ghost of Yōtei. That was a plan announced at the time, not proof that every subsequent release would arrive on that schedule.

Sony’s 2025 Corporate Report reinforces the portfolio reading: it lists advancing Sony’s position as a creative leader in single-player experiences alongside diversification of its live-service offerings. Both directions remained part of the company’s stated strategy.
How the 65 million figure compares with Sony’s latest sales figure
The 65-million milestone is a historical 2024 figure. Sony’s official sales page now reports more than 95 million PS5 hardware units sold worldwide as of June 30, 2026. These figures should be read with their dates and measurement basis attached:

Sony’s current figure is explicitly sell-in hardware sales. It is not the same measure as consumer sell-through, and it should not be described as a precise installed base of consoles in players’ homes.

The relevant 2024 executive was Hiroki Totoki, then Sony Group Corporation’s President, COO and CFO and SIE’s interim CEO. Sony later announced that Hideaki Nishino would become SIE President and CEO effective April 1, 2025, while Totoki would become Sony Group Corporation President and CEO. The 2024 comments should therefore not be presented as statements by SIE’s current president.
