Sony announced on July 1, 2026, that it plans to discontinue physical disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles starting in January 2028. New releases after that point are expected to be distributed digitally through PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats.
The announcement is narrower than “Sony is killing discs.” It covers new PlayStation game releases, not every disc Sony makes. Games already released, or scheduled to release before January 2028 in disc format, are outside the announced change. The notice does not settle the future of movie Blu-rays, music CDs, recordable media, or disc-drive hardware.

What Sony actually announced
Sid Shuman, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s senior director of content communications, wrote that “As consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry continue to shift away from physical discs to digital, physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028.”
That sentence establishes a production and release-format change, not the immediate removal of games that are already on shelves. Sony also said the transition will not affect games already released or games scheduled to release before January 2028 in disc format.

Who will notice the change most?
Players who insist on a physical copy
If your buying decision depends on receiving a PlayStation game on a disc, the effect is direct. Once the announced transition begins, a new game released after the cutoff is not expected to have a newly produced physical edition. You would need to decide whether the digital release meets your needs or whether to buy an earlier title that still has a disc edition.
Players who already buy digitally
If you routinely purchase downloads, the main change is the disappearance of a physical option for new releases. The announcement does not establish how much that will change your day-to-day experience, because it does not measure individual preferences or describe new account, licensing or offline-access terms.

Sony says the transition does not affect games released, or scheduled for disc release, before January 2028. That gives a clear timing rule when you are deciding whether to buy a current disc game. It does not guarantee that a particular title will remain in stock, be reprinted, or become more valuable. Availability depends on the publisher, retailer and remaining inventory.
Collectors, borrowers and resellers
The announcement changes the supply plan for new game discs, but it does not provide measured conclusions about collecting, lending, resale or preservation. Those are legitimate concerns to track, not outcomes that Sony has already quantified. A future policy announcement could clarify them; this one does not.
How the January 2028 cutoff works
The important distinction is the game’s release timing and whether a disc release was scheduled before the cutoff. Use this framework rather than treating January 2028 as a date when every existing disc stops working or disappears.
| Release situation | Announced treatment | What you should not assume |
|---|---|---|
| Already released before January 2028 | Sony says it is unaffected by the transition. | That every retailer will keep selling it or that stock will be replenished. |
| Scheduled to release in disc format before January 2028 | Sony says it is unaffected. | That an announced date cannot change or that every region will receive identical stock. |
| New game releasing from January 2028 onward | Physical disc production is scheduled to stop; Sony says new games will be offered digitally. | That the announcement ends all other Sony disc manufacturing. |
For a game close to the boundary, confirm the publisher’s current release date and the edition listed for your region. “Before January 2028” describes Sony’s stated scope; it is not a promise about a particular store’s inventory.

Sony says new games will remain available through PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats. The statement therefore describes continued retail distribution, but in a digital form rather than on a newly pressed disc.

It does not, in this announcement, specify detailed terms for every digital purchase. The notice does not establish licensing language, offline-access rules, account-transfer policies, installation requirements or how long a particular title will be offered. Treat those as product-specific questions to check on the game’s listing and the applicable PlayStation terms.
Why Sony says it is making the switch
Sony’s stated rationale is that consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry are shifting away from physical discs toward digital distribution. That is Sony’s explanation for the decision; it should not be presented as proof that every player prefers downloads.
A separate company sales figure helps explain the business context but has a narrow definition. Sony financial results, as reported by TechCrunch in 2026, put digital downloads at 85% of full-game software sales on PS4 and PS5 in the fiscal quarter described. That is a company sales mix for a specific period. It is not a survey of player preferences, a guarantee about future sales or a measurement of how much a disc matters to any one household.
Those distinctions matter. A high digital share can support Sony’s decision to change manufacturing, while a substantial group of physical-first players can still be directly affected. Both statements can be true without turning the sales percentage into a universal preference claim.
What the announcement does not establish
Several broad interpretations go beyond Sony’s wording.
- It does not say Sony is ending every kind of disc production. The covered category is physical discs for new PlayStation games.
- It does not announce the end of movie Blu-rays, music CDs or recordable media. Those products are not addressed in the notice.
- It does not announce the end of disc-drive hardware. The statement concerns production of game discs, not a timetable for console drives or external hardware.
- It does not guarantee that a particular pre-2028 game will stay available. “Unaffected” means outside this transition’s scope, not permanently stocked.
- It does not quantify changes to borrowing, resale, preservation or offline play. Those effects remain open questions unless Sony or another authoritative source provides specific terms and evidence.
What to do if physical games matter to you
1. Classify the release by date
For each game you are considering, record whether it is already released, scheduled before January 2028, or scheduled from January 2028 onward. The date category tells you which side of Sony’s announced policy it falls on.
2. Verify the edition, not just the title
Look for an explicit disc edition in the publisher or retailer listing. A game can have a physical release in one region and a different offering elsewhere. Sony’s announcement does not promise identical editions in every market.

3. Buy based on availability, not speculation
If a pre-cutoff disc is important, check current stock and the seller’s return policy. Sony’s statement protects the release from this particular production change, but it does not promise future reprints or a resale premium.

4. Keep the cutoff in your calendar
For games announced near January 2028, recheck the publisher’s date and format information. A delay could move a planned release across the boundary, and Sony’s schedule could be revised.
5. Separate format concerns from unconfirmed policy questions
Make a list of the issues that matter to you—such as lending, long-term access or playing without an internet connection—and look for title-specific terms rather than assuming the disc announcement answers them. The July 2026 notice does not provide those details.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do if you are comfortable with digital releases
You do not need to change your buying habits solely because of the announcement. New games are still planned for PlayStation and are expected to be sold digitally through the existing store and retail channels. The practical step is to monitor each game’s listing for its release date, edition and platform requirements.
If you prefer purchasing from a physical retailer, Sony’s wording is significant: retailers are expected to offer new games in digital formats. The announcement does not specify whether every retailer will carry every title or which digital delivery method each retailer will use, so confirm the listing before paying.
Does the change make current discs more important?
It can, but only in a limited and personal sense. A player who wants a new game on a disc has a clear reason to prioritize releases that arrive before January 2028. A player who is satisfied with downloads may see little practical difference beyond losing the option to choose a disc for future releases.
There is no evidence in the announcement that every current disc will become scarce or valuable. The safest conclusion is narrower: after the announced start date, the supply of newly produced discs for new PlayStation games is expected to stop, while games already released or scheduled before the cutoff remain outside this specific change.
Bottom line for different buyers
| If you are… | How much the announcement matters | Best response |
|---|---|---|
| A physical-only buyer of new games | High. Your preferred format is scheduled to disappear for new releases from January 2028. | Track pre-cutoff releases and verify disc editions while they are available. |
| Mostly digital already | Low to moderate. The digital channel continues, but future physical choice narrows. | Check each game’s digital listing and terms. |
| Choosing a current disc game | Relevant for timing, not a guarantee of stock or value. | Use the January 2028 rule and confirm present availability. |
| Concerned about all Sony disc products | Unclear. The notice covers new PlayStation game discs only. | Do not extend the announcement to movies, music, recordable media or hardware. |
Sony is planning to stop producing physical discs for new PlayStation games starting in January 2028. Whether that matters is determined mainly by one question: do you need a physical copy of a new PlayStation game? If yes, the policy is a meaningful deadline. If no, it is primarily a change in format choice—not proof that all discs, all existing games or every related product are going away.
