Sony’s AI-powered Aloy was shown in a reported internal prototype demonstration—not announced as a feature in a released PlayStation game. March 2025 coverage described a conversational version of the Horizon protagonist appearing in a Horizon Forbidden West setting. The available reporting does not establish whether that specific prototype later shipped, was canceled, or remained in development.
What Sony’s AI PlayStation character demo showed
The Verge’s March 11, 2025 report described an internal video in which an AI version of Aloy conversed with a presenter in a Horizon Forbidden West game context. The demo presented her as a character able to respond in conversation; the coverage does not establish that she was independently playing the game, making gameplay decisions, or available to players.

Game Developer said it reviewed the footage and attributed several technologies to the demonstration:
- OpenAI Whisper for speech recognition.
- GPT-4 and Meta’s Llama 3 for conversation or problem solving.
- Sony’s Emotional Voice Synthesis (EVS) for generating speech.
- Sony’s Mockingbird technology for audio-driven facial animation.
This is a component list reported from prototype footage, not a published Sony product specification. Contemporaneous coverage said the demo video was removed from YouTube after a copyright claim.

Prototype demonstration is not a released PlayStation feature
The key distinction is between a demonstration of what AI-powered PlayStation characters might do and a feature players can use. The reports concern an internal prototype and do not announce a release, supported game, player-facing interface, or launch date. They also do not establish the prototype’s later status.
The demo’s conversational responses should not be confused with a complete game AI system. The coverage shows a character responding to a presenter; it does not demonstrate how an AI character would behave across a full game, whether it could change quests or combat, or how developers would constrain its responses.

What Sony’s wider AI work and patent do—and don’t—show
Sony has documented broader interest in game AI, but that context is separate from the Aloy demo. In its August 31, 2023 research overview, Sony Interactive Entertainment included realistic avatars and NPCs among its research themes, with the broader aim of exploring what makes games more fun.
Sony AI’s gaming research page describes work with Sony Interactive Entertainment and PlayStation Studios on game AI agents, including Gran Turismo Sophy, a racing agent developed using deep reinforcement learning. That is evidence of game-agent research, not a release plan for conversational Aloy.

A separate Sony patent application, US20250161813A1, was published on May 22, 2025. It describes using game-state and scene-interactivity data, filtering that information, and applying context-aware logic so an NPC can respond to a player’s situation with comments or actions. A published application records a proposed invention; it does not prove that a particular game implements it or that it is the same system shown in the Aloy demo.
What Sony and the reports said about the demonstration
GameSpot identified the demo’s narrator as Sharwin Raghoebardajal, a software engineering director at Sony Interactive Entertainment. In its March 10, 2025 report, GameSpot attributed this description of the demo to him: “This is just a glimpse of what is possible.” That frames the footage as a demonstration, not a promise that the technology would reach a game.

Aloy’s performer raised consent and job concerns
Ashly Burch, who performs Aloy, said she was concerned about AI’s effect on game performance as an art form, including questions of consent, compensation, and protections for possible AI doubles. Push Square reported on March 15, 2025 that Burch said Guerrilla contacted her and assured her the demo “didn’t reflect anything in development” and did not use her performance, including voice or facial-capture data. That is Burch’s account of what the studio told her; it should not be treated as a universal Sony policy or expanded into a claim about other projects.
In the same discussion, Burch said, “I feel worried.” She was describing her concerns about the impact of AI on performance, not confirming that the demo used her voice or likeness. Push Square’s report provides her comments and account of Guerrilla’s assurance.

What players can conclude
- The AI-powered Aloy shown in March 2025 was reported as an internal prototype demonstration in a Horizon Forbidden West context.
- Coverage attributed speech recognition, language-model responses, generated speech, and audio-driven facial animation to the demo.
- The demonstration is not evidence of a shipped feature, a retail product, or an AI character players can currently use.
- Sony’s wider AI research and its context-aware NPC patent application show related areas of interest, but neither proves that this prototype was implemented in a game.
