Sony’s reported statement about digital-game ownership was made in a court filing over PlayStation Store disclosures—not as a PS6 announcement. It is Sony’s argument in litigation, not a court ruling, and the available reporting does not establish that the PS6 will be digital-only or have a new ownership policy.
What Sony reportedly argued
Reporting on Sony Interactive Entertainment’s response to a California lawsuit says the company argued that reasonable consumers would understand PlayStation Store games to be licensed software, rather than goods they own in the traditional sense. Sony reportedly pointed to its terms of service and software product license agreement as disclosing that distinction.

The reported filing included this sentence: “In the digital age, it is not plausible to allege that reasonable consumers believed they were obtaining ‘ownership’ of a digital game.” The quotation is attributed to Sony’s filing, but the underlying filing was not independently reviewed. Treat it as a reported litigation statement, not an official policy announcement.

What the lawsuit is about
The case concerns whether PlayStation Store’s purchase language and license disclosures meet California’s requirements for digital goods. Plaintiffs reportedly contend that the wording and disclosures do not provide the clarity the law requires; Sony’s reported position is that its terms make the licensing arrangement clear. Those are opposing party arguments. Neither should be presented as a court’s conclusion.

Coverage describes California AB 2426 as requiring a plain-language disclosure that a digital-goods transaction is a license when a seller uses purchase language. The statutory text and any court interpretation are not established by the reporting summarized here, so the law’s exact application to PlayStation Store should not be inferred from the parties’ competing claims.
Does this change what a PlayStation owner can do?
The reported argument describes Sony’s view of what consumers should understand when buying a digital game; it does not, by itself, announce a change to store terms or say that every digital purchase can be revoked at will. The coverage also does not establish every legal right attached to a digital license.

A physical disc and a digital license are different formats, with potentially different practical consequences. A disc may be needed to access an installed game, while a digital copy is tied to the applicable account and license terms. But this case reporting does not settle questions about transfer, resale, lending, future access, or the effect of platform or publisher support. A disc should not be treated as a guarantee of perpetual access, and the legal consequences depend on the relevant terms and applicable law.
What this says about PS6
Nothing in the reported filing establishes a PS6-specific ownership policy, confirms the console’s hardware configuration, or shows that PS6 games will be digital-only. The lawsuit concerns current PlayStation Store disclosures, not a verified PS6 product announcement. A legal argument about how consumers understand digital purchases is not evidence of what Sony will build or sell for a future console.

What remains unresolved
Reporting referenced a hearing scheduled for October 1, 2026, but does not establish what happened at or after it. The case’s current status—whether it remains pending, was dismissed, or has been decided—cannot be stated on that basis. The reported filing date, statutory details, and quotation likewise require confirmation against primary records before being treated as definitive.
