Sony’s US patent application describes a modular video game controller with selectable on-screen icons and a rotating control. It does not identify the design as a PlayStation 6 controller or confirm that Sony will sell it. The PS6 connection is speculation, not a fact established by the filing.
What Sony’s patent application describes
Sony Interactive Entertainment Inc. filed the application on January 16, 2025. It was published as US 2026/0199776 A1 on July 16, 2026, under the title “Modular Video Game Controller.” A patent application publication describes proposed technology; it is not evidence of a released product. The abstract describes a graphical interface that presents selectable icons, paired with a rotating member for selecting icons or navigating system features. In the patent’s words: “The user input device includes a graphical user interface configured to present selectable icons to control or navigate features of the video game system and a rotating member that rotates relative to an axis that intersects the controller body.”
It is not described as a fully touchscreen controller
The application discusses a touchscreen that can receive touch input, but the concept is not simply a controller made entirely of a touchscreen. Its abstract expressly includes a rotating member, and the patent also describes a removable input device. Embodiments and claims include magnetic attachment at reference locations and layouts that can put the input device between the thumbsticks.

- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
The filing also discusses possible notifications and non-game interface features. These are disclosed possibilities, not confirmed final specifications or proof of how the controller would work in practice.
Does the patent confirm a PlayStation 6 controller?
No. The application is titled “Modular Video Game Controller”; it does not name the PlayStation 6 or say the concept is intended for that console. The PS6 angle comes from news framing, not from the patent identification. MP1st’s report describes the modular touchscreen concept and compares it with the PS5 DualSense touchpad, but that comparison does not establish a PS6 connection.

How the concept differs from a DualSense
The PS5 DualSense is an existing controller with a conventional fixed control layout and a touchpad. Sony’s patent application instead explores a touchscreen interface alongside removable or repositionable controls. That is a comparison between existing hardware and a proposed design—not evidence that a DualSense has the patented screen or modular controls, or that the proposed design would be better or more comfortable.

The application and the cited report do not confirm that Sony will manufacture or launch this controller. They also do not establish a release date, price, compatibility, or consumer testing. Until Sony announces a product, the filing is best understood as a disclosed controller concept rather than a preview of a specific console accessory.
