Yes, Sony really did discount selected PS5 consoles in the UK—but this was a temporary PlayStation Direct promotion, not a permanent price cut. The September 2025 Autumn Sale reduced the PS5 Slim Digital Edition to £339.99, while the disc model fell to £434.99. The promotion has ended, and subsequent price increases from both Sony and Microsoft mean those figures must now be treated as historical.
What Sony’s PS5 deal included
Sony’s PlayStation Direct UK Autumn Sale, reported on 22 September 2025, offered discounts of up to £90 on selected PS5 products. The advertised deals were:

The figures were reported by TechRadar and applied to the UK PlayStation Direct store. They were promotional prices, not a new permanent recommended retail price. PlayStation’s deal terms allow promotional prices to end when an offer expires, is changed or is removed.

The £339.99 PS5 was the digital model
The largest saving applied to the PS5 Slim Digital Edition. It does not include a built-in disc drive, so it cannot play boxed PS5 or PS4 games, second-hand discs, borrowed games or 4K Blu-rays.
Its lower upfront price was therefore not equivalent to a disc-equipped PS5. Digital games must be bought through the PlayStation Store, where discounts and pricing can differ from physical retailers. Owners also lose the ability to resell a game after finishing it.
The disc model cost £95 more during the sale. That extra cost could make sense for anyone with a physical PS4 library, anyone who regularly buys used games, or anyone who wants to borrow and resell discs. It also avoids the risk of buying a digital console and later paying for a compatible PS5 Disc Drive. Sony’s UK disc-drive RRP was reduced to £69.99 in April 2025, but that is a historical price and should not be assumed to be current without checking the live PlayStation Direct store.

The PS5 Slim with 24 months of PlayStation Plus Premium cost £634.99, £45 below its listed previous price. Premium includes online multiplayer, monthly games, a games catalogue, classic games and limited game trials. The current benefits are described on PlayStation’s official PS Plus page.

However, the bundle was not automatically the best choice. Its value depended on whether the buyer would otherwise pay for two years of Premium. Someone who mainly plays offline games and does not want a recurring subscription would be better served by comparing the console-only price. Conversely, a player already committed to Premium could treat the bundle’s £45 reduction as a genuine saving.
Why Xbox was part of the story
The original headline linked Sony’s promotion with Xbox hardware becoming more expensive. That was reasonable context, but it was not a direct, same-day model-for-model comparison, and there was no evidence that Sony introduced the sale in response to Microsoft.
A fair comparison must identify the exact hardware:
- The PS5 Slim Digital Edition should be compared with a digital Xbox model such as Xbox Series S, while recognising that Series S is a lower-performance product.
- The disc-equipped PS5 is more naturally compared with Xbox Series X, where storage, performance and physical-media support are closer considerations.
- Storage capacity, included games, subscription access, regional pricing and whether a console is new, used or refurbished all affect the result.
It is therefore too broad to say simply that “the PS5 was cheaper than Xbox”. The £339.99 PS5 was a particularly aggressive digital-console promotion, but a lower sticker price does not make two consoles equivalent.

What Microsoft changed in 2026
Microsoft announced another worldwide Xbox price increase on 25 June 2026, effective 1 August 2026. According to Microsoft’s official announcement, 512GB models increased by US$100 and 1TB models by US$150. Microsoft also said the 2TB model would be discontinued.
Microsoft attributed the increase to higher storage and memory costs, saying those costs had risen by more than 2.5 times. That is Microsoft’s stated explanation; it should not be presented as independently established causation without additional evidence.
The company also pointed to financing, previously played consoles and certified refurbished hardware as alternatives. Availability, pricing, warranty terms and financing eligibility vary by country and buyer, so these options are not automatically cheaper than a new console.

Sony later raised PS5 prices too
The September 2025 promotion should not be interpreted as proof that Sony had permanently moved to lower prices. Sony raised US PS5 prices effective 21 August 2025, shortly before the UK sale. The announced US prices were:

Sony then announced broader price increases effective 2 April 2026. The published prices were:

Sony said continuing global economic pressures were behind the changes. The announcement is available on the PlayStation Blog. These later prices make the old £339.99 offer look unusually attractive in retrospect, but they do not make it a current price.

Best for digital-only players: the PS5 Slim Digital Edition
The £90 reduction was the standout saving. It suited buyers who purchase almost every game digitally, do not own physical PS4 games and do not need a Blu-ray player. The trade-off was permanent dependence on digital-store pricing unless a disc drive was added later.
Best for physical-game buyers: the disc PS5
The £45 saving was smaller, but the disc model offered more flexibility. It supported boxed games, used-game shopping, borrowing, resale and existing physical libraries. For many households, those options can outweigh the £95 gap between the two sale prices.
Best for committed subscribers: the PS Plus bundle
The bundle made sense for someone who already intended to pay for 24 months of PlayStation Plus Premium. It was not necessarily good value for a buyer who would otherwise choose a cheaper tier or no subscription at all.
Should you buy a PS5 now?
The September 2025 Autumn Sale is over, so nobody should buy on the assumption that £339.99 is still available. Current buyers should check PlayStation Direct UK, the official deals page and major UK retailers for live prices and stock.
Waiting for another promotion can be sensible if you are flexible about timing. PlayStation runs seasonal campaigns such as Days of Play and Black Friday promotions, but dates, models and discounts change each year; the official deals and events page is the safest place to check upcoming offers.

- Choose digital only if you are comfortable buying games digitally for the life of the console.
- Choose the disc model if you own physical games or expect to use second-hand, borrowed or resold games.
- Choose a subscription bundle only when the subscription itself is part of your planned spend.
- Consider certified refurbished or previously played hardware if a current new-console price is outside your budget, but check condition, accessories, warranty and returns.
The verdict
Sony’s PS5 promotion was real, UK-specific and significant—especially the £90 reduction on the PS5 Slim Digital Edition. But it was a temporary PlayStation Direct discount, not a permanent response to Xbox pricing. The disc PS5 was the more flexible long-term purchase, while the digital model delivered the biggest immediate saving.
By September 2026, both the deal and its original pricing context are historical: Sony has raised PS5 prices globally since the promotion, and Microsoft has increased Xbox prices again. Use the old figures to understand how strong the 2025 offer was, not as a live buying price.
