The early reveal can make Sony’s revised PS5 look familiar rather than dramatically slim: it keeps the console’s tall, sculptural shape. But “PS5 Slim” is the common nickname, not the formal name Sony used in its announcement, and Sony’s specifications show that the 2023 model is smaller and lighter than the 2020 launch versions.
Why the revised PS5 may not look slim at a glance
The revised console retains the PS5’s distinctive two-panel silhouette. That visual impression is subjective, but it helps explain why the name “Slim” can feel like a mismatch in an early reveal. In its November 15, 2023 teardown video, iFixit described the new PlayStation 5 as looking “not much different,” adding that it did not seem different enough to be called Slim. That is iFixit’s visual assessment, not Sony’s product name or a measurement: iFixit’s teardown.

Sony’s October 10, 2023 announcement called it a “new PS5 model.” “PS5 Slim” is the widely used informal label. The revised design has four panel sections, with the upper sections finished in a glossy look and the lower sections matte, but the overall form remains recognizably PS5: Sony’s new-model announcement.
How much smaller is the 2023 PS5?
Sony’s listed dimensions use width × height × depth, excluding projecting parts. The comparison below pairs each revised configuration with its matching 2020 launch configuration; these are Sony specifications, not independent measurements.

The 2020 figures come from Sony’s original PS5 hardware specifications; the revised-model figures come from Sony’s 2023 announcement.
Sony says the new model’s volume is reduced by more than 30% and its weight by 18% for the disc-drive model and 24% for the Digital Edition, compared with the previous models. Those percentages are Sony’s claims; its announcement does not explain how it calculated volume. The dimensions nevertheless show the practical change in each axis: the revised models are narrower, shorter and shallower than their corresponding launch versions.
What else changed besides the dimensions?
Storage
Sony lists a 1TB SSD in the revised model. In the announcement, Sid Shuman, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s senior director of content communications, said: “The same technology features that make PS5 the best to play are packed into a smaller form factor, along with an attachable Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive and a 1TB SSD for more internal storage.” The “best to play” phrase is Sony’s characterization, not an independent comparison.
Disc drive and stand
The revised Digital Edition can be fitted with a separately sold Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive. Sony said a horizontal stand is included, while a vertical stand is sold separately. Sony also announced console covers for the new model. These are product and accessory details from the 2023 announcement; they do not establish current prices or availability.

Will it fit where your current PS5 does?
The published dimensions indicate a smaller chassis, but they are not a complete shelf-fit guarantee. Sony’s dimension entries exclude projecting parts, and a placement check should also account for the stand, the console’s orientation, and ventilation clearance. Measure the actual space and compare it with the console in the position you plan to use rather than relying on the bare chassis figures alone.
