Yes—Sony’s Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) is coming to the standard PS5. Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first games to add it through patches, as an additional graphics option. QSSR does not require a new console or accessory, but its visual benefit and performance impact depend on the game and graphics mode.
What QSSR is—and what changed
Sony Interactive Entertainment announced QSSR on October 1, 2026, describing it as a “new performance tier of AI upscaling” and an evolution of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). Sony says QSSR grew out of Project Amethyst, its graphics collaboration with AMD, and uses a streamlined neural-network architecture plus a hand-tuned implementation intended to maximize performance on PS5. Sony’s announcement describes the design; it is not an independent benchmark.
In practical terms, AI upscaling reconstructs a higher-detail image from a lower-resolution input. Sony’s stated aim for QSSR on PS5 is improved image detail and stability. Sony says PSSR remains the higher-tier experience on PS5 Pro, so QSSR is not a replacement claim for that console’s feature.
Which PS5 games support QSSR?

Sony’s announcement does not give specific patch dates or an in-game menu path for either title. It says QSSR will be offered broadly to PlayStation developers, but does not identify further games or provide a rollout schedule. The feature is being introduced through supported games, not as a universal system-level toggle.

Marvel’s Wolverine, developed by Insomniac Games with Marvel Games, launched worldwide exclusively on PS5 on September 15, 2026, according to Sony’s release notice.
What reported testing found about image quality
TechRadar’s October 2, 2026 report on Digital Foundry’s hands-on analysis says the tests found improvements to image stability, fine detail, and sub-pixel integrity, including fewer artifacts in moving foliage. The reported visual improvement was especially apparent in Wolverine and less dramatic in Ghost of Yōtei. Insomniac’s Mike Fitzgerald, Head of Technology, said QSSR “adds more pixel-level clarity and stability” to environments in Wolverine. Sucker Punch Productions’ Lead Rendering Engineer, Jasmin Patry, said it resolves fine detail in characters and environments with temporal stability not previously possible on PS5. Those are developer perspectives published in Sony’s announcement, rather than independent test findings.
Does QSSR lower the frame rate?
It can carry a performance cost in some conditions, but the reported result is not a universal PS5 penalty. TechRadar relayed one Digital Foundry comparison in uncapped Wolverine Performance Mode that showed a frame-rate reduction of about 8–10 frames per second. Richard Leadbetter attributed the measured QSSR processing cost in that test to approximately 1.5–1.8 milliseconds.

In the tested 60-fps modes with dynamic resolution scaling, performance was reported as nearly identical. Uncapped or higher-resolution scenarios could incur more cost. These figures belong to that particular comparison; they do not predict the result in another title or graphics mode. To judge the trade-off, compare QSSR on and off in the same game and mode, paying attention to both image stability and frame-rate behavior.

You do not need to buy a PS5 Pro, replacement console, or accessory to use QSSR in a supported game. You do need the relevant game patch, and the title must offer QSSR as a graphics option. Sony has not published a QSSR-specific menu walkthrough for either game, so the exact in-game label and location are not established here.

- Install the available update for the game. Check the game’s update options on the console or its product tile for an available patch.
- To check for a PS5 system software update, open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings, then choose the available update.
- After the game patch is installed, look in that game’s graphics settings for its QSSR option. Its exact label and menu position may vary.
Sony’s PS5 system software update instructions cover the general console update process and advise using official update files and procedures; they do not document game-specific QSSR settings.
