Sony announced its smaller PS5 redesign on October 10, 2023. Commonly called the PS5 Slim, the CFI-2000 model group adds a 1TB SSD and a removable Ultra HD Blu-ray drive option; it is a size and storage redesign, not a faster PS5. As of April 2, 2026, Sony’s U.S. recommended prices are $649.99 for the disc model and $599.99 for the Digital Edition.
What Sony announced
The redesign came in two configurations: a PS5 with an Ultra HD Blu-ray drive installed, and a PS5 Digital Edition without one. The Digital Edition can accept Sony’s optional drive later. Sony began rolling out the redesigned model in the United States in November 2023, replacing the earlier models as remaining inventory sold through. Sony calls the hardware the “CFI-2000 model group—slim”; “PS5 Slim” is the familiar shorthand. Sony’s announcement and its PS5 setup and model support page provide the official details.
Sony said the new chassis reduces volume by more than 30% compared with the original PS5, with weight reductions of 18% for the disc model and 24% for the Digital Edition relative to their original counterparts. It has four outer panels, with glossy upper sections and matte lower sections.
How the attachable disc drive works
The drive is a console-specific module that attaches to the lower side of the PS5 Slim Digital Edition. It is not a general-purpose USB Blu-ray drive, and Sony’s modular-drive feature is for the newer CFI-2000 slim hardware—not the original PS5 Digital Edition. The standard slim PS5 includes the drive from the outset.

- Drive will play 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, Blu-ray discs and DVDs
- Internet connection is required to pair Disc Drive and PS5 Digital Edition Console upon setup.
Sony describes it as an Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive. It supports PS5 game discs, compatible PS4 game discs, Ultra HD Blu-ray movies, Blu-ray discs and DVDs, subject to supported formats and regional limitations. Sony does not list ordinary audio CDs among the supported formats in its announcement.
Sony’s original U.S. recommended price for the optional drive was $79.99 in 2023; that is historical, not a confirmed current price. Compare the live price of the drive plus a Digital Edition against the disc model before buying. A disc-equipped bundle or promotion may change the calculation.

PS5 Slim compared with the original PS5
| Feature | PS5 Slim (CFI-2000) | Original PS5 |
|---|---|---|
| Dimensions | Disc model: approximately 358 × 96 × 216 mm. Digital Edition: approximately 358 × 80 × 216 mm. | Not stated in Sony’s October 2023 slim announcement. |
| Weight | Digital Edition: approximately 2.6 kg. Sony said weight is 18% lower for the disc model and 24% lower for the Digital Edition than the respective originals. | Not stated in Sony’s October 2023 slim announcement. |
| Storage | 1TB SSD; usable game space is lower because system software occupies part of the drive. | Approximately 825GB SSD. |
| Disc drive | Included on the disc model; optional attachable drive for the Digital Edition. | The disc model has a built-in drive; the original Digital Edition does not accept the slim detachable drive. |
| Performance | No performance upgrade over the standard PS5. It retains the same general Zen 2 CPU and RDNA 2-based graphics architecture, 16GB GDDR6 memory, and support for ray tracing, 4K output, 120Hz displays, VRR and Tempest 3D AudioTech. | The redesign does not change the standard PS5’s general performance class or game library. |
| Stand | Horizontal support included; vertical stand sold separately. | Not stated in Sony’s October 2023 slim announcement. |
The listed slim dimensions exclude projecting parts, so they do not guarantee an identical percentage reduction in the space needed for a stand, cables or ventilation. The extra storage is useful, but 1TB is the advertised drive capacity, not all available game storage. The slim models use the same PS5 game library and broad PS4 backward-compatibility framework; this is not the separate, higher-priced PS5 Pro.

Choose the disc model if you use physical media
- You own PS4 or PS5 discs, buy used games, borrow games or resell them.
- You want to play UHD Blu-ray movies, Blu-rays or DVDs.
- You would rather pay for disc capability upfront than depend on finding and pricing the separate drive later.
Even if most of your library is digital, physical-game discounts or disc lending can make the built-in drive useful. Compare the actual price gap after promotions rather than relying only on Sony’s recommended prices.

Choose the Digital Edition if you are committed to digital games
- You buy from the PlayStation Store or primarily use digital subscriptions and game sharing.
- You do not need movie-disc playback or access to physical games.
- You want the lower initial console price and accept that adding disc support later is a separate purchase.
If you might want discs, factor in the drive’s current price before choosing this route. The original $79.99 figure is a 2023 MSRP, not a current quote.
Keep an original PS5 if it already meets your needs
For a working original console, the slim redesign offers a smaller enclosure and more built-in storage, not faster games. An upgrade is more compelling if those specific changes solve a space or storage problem; otherwise, the cost of replacing a functioning console may outweigh the benefit.

What Sony’s January 2028 disc policy means
Sony has announced that production of physical game discs for new PlayStation games will end in January 2028. Games released before that cutoff are not affected. The drive can still serve owners of existing physical games, used discs, movies and games released before the cutoff; the announcement does not establish that disc support for existing games will end. It does, however, weaken the case for buying a drive solely to collect new physical PlayStation releases after January 2028. Sony’s policy announcement sets out the cutoff.
Quick Recap
Setup and accessory details
- Horizontal placement: A horizontal support is included with the slim console.
- Vertical placement: Sony sold a separate vertical stand for an original U.S. recommended price of $29.99 in 2023. Check the current listing and model compatibility before purchase.
- Adding the drive: Buy Sony’s console-specific drive for the compatible slim Digital Edition, not a generic USB optical drive. Confirm the exact console model group before ordering.
- Placement: Allow room for the console’s dimensions, stand and cables, and do not assume that the headline volume reduction translates directly to the clearance your entertainment center needs.
