The WD_BLACK C50 is a 1TB expansion card for Xbox Series X|S, built to store and play compatible games—including Series X|S-optimized titles—from the console’s dedicated expansion slot. But the advertised $99 deal is not confirmed by the available retailer price captures: Walmart showed $149.99, and a Best Buy listing showed $139.99. Treat $99 as a buy-if-you-find-it price, not a verified live offer.
What the $99 deal is supposed to be
The product is the WD_BLACK C50 Expansion Card for Xbox, 1TB—not a conventional WD_BLACK USB drive or an internal PC SSD. It is a compact, Xbox-licensed card for the dedicated Storage Expansion port on Xbox Series X and Series S. WD’s product sheet describes it as plug-and-play for those consoles: WD_BLACK C50 product data sheet.
Retail listings identify the 1TB model; confirm the title and capacity before checkout, since similar names can refer to other storage products or capacities. The Best Buy listing is for the WD C50 1TB Xbox Series X|S card.
Is the $99 price live?
The available price captures do not verify a current $99 offer. Walmart showed a $149.99 reference price, while Best Buy showed $139.99 in one listing. Windows Central reported a $149.99 Best Buy price on June 29, 2026, and noted a previous stock issue. Those are dated price signals, not confirmation of today’s checkout price.

Why an expansion card instead of a USB drive?
The C50 fits the Xbox Series X|S storage slot and is intended for direct play of compatible Series X|S-optimized games. Xbox says its Storage Expansion Cards connect at the rear of the console and provide an experience matching the internal SSD. That is Xbox’s description of the category, not an independent benchmark for this particular card. WD’s own data sheet uses the more qualified phrase “similar performance.” See Xbox’s storage primer and the Xbox Series X storage overview.

Ordinary USB storage remains useful, but it is not interchangeable with the expansion card for every game. USB 3.1 HDDs and SSDs can store games and directly run supported Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox titles. Many Series X|S-optimized games need to be on the internal SSD or a compatible expansion card to launch. Some titles have individual requirements, so check the game if it will not start from a particular drive.
| Storage type | Direct play of Series X|S-optimized games | Best use | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| WD_BLACK C50 or compatible expansion card | Designed for compatible optimized games as well as older Xbox games | Keeping optimized games installed and ready to launch | Usually costs more per terabyte than USB storage; uses the expansion slot |
| USB 3.x SSD | Many optimized games must be moved to internal storage or an expansion card before playing | Faster transfers, extra storage, and supported backward-compatible games | Uses a USB port; moving some optimized games adds a step |
| USB 3.x hard drive | Many optimized games must be moved to internal storage or an expansion card before playing | Lower-cost archival storage and older games | Slower transfers and loads than an SSD; not the direct-play solution for many optimized games |

Compatibility and capacity
The C50 is for Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, both of which have the dedicated expansion-card slot. It is not an Xbox One expansion-card accessory; Xbox One consoles use USB storage instead. Xbox’s pages describe Series S compatibility and the supported expansion-card category: Xbox Series S and Xbox Storage Expansion Cards.
The card is advertised as 1TB, but the console will show less available space after formatting and system overhead. The exact free space varies with console software and installed system data, so do not expect a precise 1TB of game space. It adds capacity; it does not provide game licenses or Game Pass access.

How to install and manage the card
- Turn on the Xbox Series X or Series S and locate the rectangular Storage Expansion port on the console’s rear.
- Remove the card’s protective cover, if present, and insert the C50 fully into the port.
- Wait for the console to recognize or prepare the card if prompted. Xbox describes expansion cards as plug-and-play; no special installation is required.
- Open Settings → System → Storage devices to confirm the card appears and manage installations. Menu labels can vary with system updates.
- Choose the card as a default installation location if you want new games to go there, or use the console’s storage controls to move or copy existing games.
If the console does not recognize it, remove and firmly reinsert the card, then restart the console. If needed, fully shut down the console and test again; do not disassemble the card or console.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is $99 a good buy?
At $99, the C50 works out to $99 per advertised terabyte, and would be a compelling price for an expansion card if the listing is genuinely new, from a reputable seller, and still $99 at checkout. Xbox’s U.S. page captured a $199.99 estimated retail price for Seagate’s 1TB card, but says retailer pricing and availability can vary; it is a reference point, not a guarantee of the current Seagate price. Xbox lists Seagate capacities of 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB on its Seagate expansion card page.

The C50 remains a convenience purchase compared with a USB drive: the premium buys a place to keep compatible optimized games ready to play, rather than simply more storage. If the C50 is closer to the captured $139.99–$149.99 range, compare current offers and decide whether direct play is worth the extra cost for your library. A USB SSD or hard drive can be the better value if you mainly archive games or play older backward-compatible titles.
Quick Recap
Buy at $99 if
- You verify it is a new 1TB WD_BLACK C50 at $99 from a reputable seller.
- You regularly play Series X|S-optimized games and want them ready to launch without transferring them.
- You have a 512GB Series S and need more room for an active game library.
Consider USB storage instead if
- You mainly need inexpensive archive space or play backward-compatible games.
- You are comfortable transferring some optimized games to internal storage before playing.
- The $99 price is gone, the listing is for a different model or condition, or you need more than 1TB.
