Sony announced a smaller redesigned PS5 on October 10, 2023, and said it would begin rolling out in the United States in November 2023. The PS5 Digital Edition in this redesign could take an optional Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive, sold separately. The November date and the prices below are historical launch details, not statements about current availability or pricing.
What Sony announced for November 2023
Sony described the redesign as a smaller PS5 with a 1TB SSD and four separate cover panels. Its October 10, 2023 announcement said the new models would start rolling out in the U.S. in November, followed by other markets in the months afterward. Sony said the redesign reduced volume by more than 30% and weight by 18% or 24%, depending on the configuration, compared with the previous models. Sony’s announcement also lists dimensions and weights for each configuration.

The console supports 4K at 120Hz, 8K TVs, and VRR, subject to the HDMI 2.1 specification Sony cites. The redesigned Digital Edition can be used without a disc drive or fitted with the separately sold drive.
Can you add a disc drive to the PS5 Slim Digital Edition?
Yes. Sony said buyers of the redesigned PS5 Digital Edition could add its attachable Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive later. Sony’s announcement applies to this redesigned model; it does not establish that the drive works with the original PS5 Digital Edition. Check the exact console model and the drive’s compatibility details before buying.

The distinction matters if you own physical PS5 or supported PS4 games, or want to play video discs. Sony’s 2020 FAQ says the original PS5 Digital Edition does not support optical discs, while the original disc-equipped PS5 supports PS5 and supported PS4 game discs, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, standard Blu-ray, and DVD. Those details describe the original models, not a compatibility guarantee for the redesigned console’s add-on drive. Sony’s PS5 FAQ also says the original models have identical performance apart from the disc drive.

These are Sony’s recommended U.S. rollout prices announced in October 2023, not current prices. Sony also announced recommended prices for Europe, the U.K., and Japan; prices and rollout timing varied by market. The standalone drive’s launch price was $79.99, while the difference between the two console configurations at launch was $50. A buyer choosing the Digital Edition and adding the drive later would therefore pay more than the launch price of the disc-equipped configuration, before any changes in local pricing or availability.

Which option makes sense?
- Choose the disc-equipped configuration if you expect to use physical games or video discs and prefer the drive included with the console.
- Choose the Digital Edition with the add-on later if you want the redesigned console without a drive initially and may want physical-disc support afterward. Confirm that the drive listing names your precise console model.
- Choose the Digital Edition without the add-on if you do not need optical discs and intend to use digital game purchases or subscriptions.
Sony said the redesigned console’s horizontal stand was included; the vertical stand was sold separately. This is separate from the disc-drive choice.
