“Soul Trap” can mean several things, but in The Elder Scrolls it most often refers to a spell that captures a defeated creature’s soul in a soul gem. To make it work, have a suitable empty gem, cast the spell on an enemy, and defeat it before the effect expires. The name also belongs to a separate card-management action in The Elder Scrolls: Legends, a 1996 PC game, and a supernatural object in a novel.
How Soul Trap works in The Elder Scrolls
In the spell context, Soul Trap is a timed effect: the target must die while the spell is active, and an empty soul gem must be available to hold the soul. Bethesda summarizes the basic sequence as: “Empty soul gems can be filled by casting the ‘Soul Trap’ spell on an enemy and defeating it while the spell is active.” Bethesda Support: “What are soul gems?”
Morrowind: check the gem’s capacity
In The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, the gem must have enough capacity for the creature’s soul. Cast Soul Trap, then kill the creature before the spell ends. A captured soul can be used to enchant an item or recharge one. Bethesda’s instructions are specific to Morrowind; they should not be treated as a universal guide to every game in the series. Bethesda Support: “How do I create an enchanted item in Morrowind?”
What a filled gem is for
In Bethesda’s Morrowind instructions, captured souls are used for enchanting or recharging magical items. Bethesda’s separate soul-gems support page also discusses charged gems as useful for recharging magical items or reviving players in the context addressed there. Those uses belong to their respective game contexts, not to one set of instructions that applies across all Elder Scrolls titles.

Soul Trap in The Elder Scrolls: Legends
The Elder Scrolls: Legends uses “Soul Trap” for a card-management action, not a spell that captures a creature’s soul. Its July 30, 2019 version 2.12 patch notes describe three Soul Trap options. Each option has different priorities for retaining premium and non-premium copies before excess cards are trapped. The action concerns a player’s card collection, rather than soul gems or combat. SoulTrap, the 1996 PC game
SoulTrap is also the styled title of a 1996 Windows game by Microforum. It is unrelated to the Elder Scrolls spell. The identification is documented by a secondary reference and discussed in a 2004 review, so readers looking for this game should distinguish it from the later franchise uses.
