South of Midnight draws on real Southern folklore, but its creatures are creative interpretations within a fictional story—not definitive depictions of every tradition. Compulsion Games has named several inspirations, including Two-Toed Tom, Huggin’ Molly, Rougarou, Altamaha-ha and the Honey Island Swamp Monster. The developers describe the Deep South’s oral storytelling as shaped by European, Caribbean and African influences, without assigning each creature to a single source.
What folklore does South of Midnight draw on?
Compulsion Games says the game takes inspiration from real Southern folklore. In its official game description, the studio names Two-Toed Tom, Huggin’ Molly, Rougarou, Altamaha-ha and the Honey Island Swamp Monster.
An Xbox Wire interview from 2023 describes the creature inspirations as coming from Deep South folklore and characterizes the region’s oral tradition as a blend shaped by European, Caribbean and African storytelling. That broad description is not a key assigning each named figure to one culture or tradition.
Which creatures and terms are named?
Two-Toed Tom, Huggin’ Molly, Rougarou and the Honey Island Swamp Monster
These four figures appear on Compulsion’s list of folklore inspirations. The official sources cited here do not establish their individual histories, regional variants or community-specific significance, so the safest way to understand them in this context is as inspirations the studio identifies—not as a complete account of each figure’s folklore.

Altamaha-ha
The studio also names Altamaha-ha as an inspiration. In the Xbox Wire interview, the developers say the creature appears in Hazel’s drawing in the reveal trailer. That identifies a connection in the game’s promotional imagery; it does not establish that the game’s version represents every telling of the figure.
Haints
Haints are recurring supernatural threats in the game. In the 2023 interview, the developers discuss them as a subject with sparse, fragmentary descriptions, which gave the creative team room to interpret them. One interviewee offers the idea of painting porch ceilings blue to keep Haints out as an example of folk belief; treat that as an anecdote from the conversation, not a universal practice.

Are hoodoo or Gullah traditions confirmed influences?
Not by the cited developer comments. A reader question asks about hoodoo and Gullah folklore, but the interview’s broader description of European, Caribbean and African storytelling does not confirm either as a specific influence on a particular creature or game element. It would overstate the available evidence to label the named figures as hoodoo or Gullah references.
How does the game adapt these stories?
Compulsion’s creators present the creatures as material for interpretation rather than fixed designs. Creative director David Sears described that flexibility in Xbox Wire: “It was very liberating to work with existing stories about creatures, but have zero eyewitness accounts and photographic evidence.” His comment explains the team’s approach; it is not a scholarly claim about how well documented any particular tradition is.

The game places its supernatural encounters in a fictional version of the American Deep South. They connect to Hazel’s effort to repair the Grand Tapestry, the game’s fictional story framework—not an established term from regional folklore. The creature encounters therefore serve both as adaptations of named inspirations and as parts of Hazel’s narrative.

Composer Olivier Deriviere’s evolving songs also help tell the story. Xbox Wire reports that the lyrics eventually tell stories about creatures Hazel encounters. The music is therefore another narrative channel for the game’s folklore-inspired material, alongside the creatures themselves.
