Complete story chapters
Story achievements unlock through progression. Follow the Guiding Strand when you want to stay on the main route, but look around before leaving areas: some optional spaces branch off from the path and contain useful pickups. If you are aiming for full completion, make a habit of checking side routes as you advance rather than treating the story path as the only route worth following.
Explore for Floofs and Life Filaments
Optional chapter areas can require platforming or spells to reach. They may contain Floofs, which are used as upgrade currency, and Life Filaments. Collecting three Life Filaments permanently increases Hazel’s health bar. Floofs and Filaments are distinct objectives: Floofs fund skills, while Filaments provide the health upgrade.

Xbox Wire’s Joe Skrebels describes the navigation aid this way: “Navigating each of South of Midnight’s chapters could be as simple as following your Guiding Strand – a feature that sees magical threads guide you to your next goal.” Treat that strand as direction to the next objective, not as a guarantee that you have cleared every optional area.
Buy and upgrade abilities
Use Floofs to purchase skill upgrades, and prioritize upgrades early if you are finding combat difficult. Xbox Wire recommends upgrading early; the specific best choice depends on how you play. Since shop-related and ability-upgrade tasks are represented in the Xbox achievement categories, check the list after spending Floofs to see whether any purchase or upgrade objective remains.

Use combat actions deliberately
Some achievements require combat actions rather than simply defeating enemies. Xbox Wire recommends learning the timing for a Perfect Dodge: a correctly timed dodge releases an energy blast that staggers nearby enemies. Pull, Push, and Weave can interrupt many enemy attacks, giving you opportunities to control a fight rather than trade hits.
One useful sequence described by Xbox Wire is to Pull an enemy, follow with Weave, then Push and use a charged ranged attack. It is a combat option, not a guaranteed solution for every enemy; use the achievement list’s exact wording to determine which actions you still need to perform.
